It's a good thing Tinkle recruits well enough that when, say, a Vaugh Autry leaves the school, we immediately forget him and start getting excited about a guy like Deshields who is likely to stay longer and pay bigger dividends.

I have a hard time imagining who you are talking about but can only think it is regarding Stocks. I will just say I loved seeing Stocks go up and get that rebound in the middle of three taller NAU guys last night. Guy gets it done when he gets in there.

It's been discussed before, and I'm not gonna be-labor it, but to explain what I mean, I offer that we have 3 talented frosh Henderson, Gregory and DeShields that rarely play (all 3 could start for NAU) and are completely wasting their eligibilities while a much-less talented player has taken those minutes with little benefit short-term and none long-term. Even in a 20 point blow-out over pathetic NAU, Tinks doesn't put in Gregory until 3 minutes left? I'd be pissed. I don't think that is what he expected. You gotta get these guys minutes (preparing for next year) in games like this. I don't know if Tinks tried to red-shirt any of them,and they all refused or what, but it makes no sense to never play 3 good frosh. I am completely projecting, but it seems every year, "somebody" doesn't return the next year for whatever reason, usually a difference of opinion with the coach and their role. I just can not imagine all 3 of those guys will all be back next year after hardly playing and with Cherry and Jamar both back next year, there won't be many minutes for guards.
Just saying IF 1 or more of those talented guys leaves, we might have to re-evaluate the coaching decisions this year. I don't have any inside scoop or anything and I didn't mean to imply that I know anything specific.

I go to the games and follow UM basketball fairly closely. Henderson, Gregory and DeShields have alot of talent and have the potential to be terrific players, but I wouldn't play any of them in front of Stockton. Stockton makes alot of smaller plays, plays good defense and is good under pressure. That's why Cherry has told Tinkle that in a close games he wants Stockton on the court with him at the end of those games. As for the 3 frosh, at this point, I would play DeShields over Henderson and Gregory. Again, all have terrific talent and potential.

I didn't go last night but was a little surprised to see the limited minutes out of the bench in what appeared a pretty comfortable win. There have been a few games where it would be nice to get more game experience for the young guys.

But let's not forget that a game is only 40 minutes long and only 5 can play at a time. With media timeouts every 4 minutes, other called TO's, etc., "fatigue" has to be one of the most overused words in basketball. I think Will Cherry could play all 40 minutes of two games in one night; he's our best guy and there's no reason he shouldn't be on the court almost all game. Same with Jamar.

I've noticed our frosh showing great enthusiasm for their fellow players during games. They're animated, talking to each other, jumping up and down for great plays and extremely supportive of the system. DeShields' appearance on the coaches show the other night was very impressive. I've had a chance to meet that kid a couple of times, he's got a great attitude.

I'm pretty sure these players know their place on this year's team. Let's not forget they're going up against Will, Kareem, Selvig and Ward every day in practice. What gets you more experience, 3 more minutes in a blowout win over NAU or 4 months of 2 hour practices against our own guys?

Next year will remain a challenge for PT with these three young guards. Will and Kareem return; they'll be playing the majority of minutes and the three sophs will again have to be patient. I think they realize this; we're not Carolina or Kentucky and with exception of Cherry/Jamar (and a few other over the years) our players wait and learn for 2 or 3 years and contribute the most in their junior and senior seasons.

I know the freshman you are talking about and though they may be a little frustrated about the minutes, they love coach and the program. Vaughn left for other reasons mostly his own fault.

Wouldn't it speak to Tinkle's intelligence that he is able to recruit skilled players, win consistantly year in and year out and that the players that "leave for disagreements" (Autry) make no impact basketball wise else where?

As for the young players, there is always a possibility at any program of losing 1 or 2 for better playing time earlier, if they are willing to sit out a year too. In my opinion, the staff has done a great job at managing playing time. Earlier in the year, I was wondering why the younger guys were not getting more minutes. I am still wondering, but based on results, I cannot question the staff about it.

There will be a lot of minutes opening up after this season. Steward, Stockton, Wood, and Selvig all graduating. I don't know for sure what each player is averaging in minutes per game. Without looking it up, I am guessing about 80 plus minutes of playing time will be lost from graduation.

That is a lot of playing time to distribute, and compete for. Reader and Hutch will get some of Selvig's minutes. Weisner can play the 3 and 4, and likely to get some of those minutes. Assuming Selvig gets 30 minutes, when healthy, that is an average of 10 minutes per player there.

That leaves around 50 minutes to compete for between Henderson, Gregory, and Deshields. That is an average of 16 to 17 minutes per player.

Gregory will be worked into the mix at PG, Deshields with combo guard minutes, and Henderson getting SG/SF minutes.

That is enough minutes to make everyone happy. If anything, I think competition for post minutes will be the most difficult to allocate, and there is more opportunity for a newbie to contribute from the 4 and 5, than 1 through 3.

Henderson is in the best position for significant minutes next season due to his size and athleticism to play SF minutes.

I don't see playing time as being a reason for any of them to leave after this season. Then again, we don't know how newbies will do, or if a walk on develops.

I am not worried about losing any the young guys.
