1st scrimmage re-cap

My two cents watching the scrimmage.

-JJ and Van will be about the deadliest combo we've seen in awhile. Van is super versatile and seems to make the game slow down. He looked like the best natural athlete on the field to me.

-Secondary will be improved, JJ didn't give them the opportunity to make plays. He either got rid of it or threw where only the reciever could get it. Whovere says he's not accurate is full of it.

-I would like to see JJ throw a bomb to Bobo at least once a game. The guy flat ran past the defense. Would have been a touchdown if JJ was throwing, imo. Obviously kicking was brutal, punting was awesome.

-Our offense should be very formiddable...

Hard to gauge defense in scrimmage situations, but I'm very high on our D.

-Strahm, Van Ackeren, and Indiana kid stood out to me (tall and very athletic body).

-Last but not least, I picked Counts to be a breakout player and I'm even more confident he will not disappoint.

Very, very good post.

Fans are seeing why Van was recruited to the University of Florida in the SEC, all the way from Cali. The kid is going to light up the FCS. He's a different caliber athlete out there. What a humble and good teammate too.

Johnson is the highly talented college QB that everyone knew he would be coming out of HS. One final four appearance already, 2 more and better to come!

I've been screaming from the rooftops about speed and height of the new Griz recievers.

The Montana offense is going to be highly fun to watch and hard to stop. In fact, opposing teams won't be able to stop them, they'll only be able to hope to contain them. I'm way more excited about the offense than I am the defense...and that's after this talk about 10 defensive starters returning. But like Delaney said, "They need to start acting like starters."

It was good to see Strahm in WA Griz...he's the real deal...big future.

Good assessment. I'm told that no one will catch Van if he breaks through.
Whoever told you this should be fired. They have no way of predicting safety positions in the future. What if a very fast safety is out of position and gets in Vans way?

Too many variables for this to be an accurate statement

Because Tully is not that fast and will not be allowed to play for the opposing team, unfortunately.

Don't think Van played running back at all last year at Marshall. Why do you have to be so negative? Did you see his run, and catch, last night? Have you seen or been hearing the comments about him?

Yes, he's the same Van that was offered a scholarship by Florida, as an athlete, out of high school.

I don't know if it's the same Van that ran for whatever at Marshall last year. I don't know anything about Marshalls o-line or run game and whether Van was running against superior defenses or doing mop-up duty or what. I do know that he has great speed, great moves, can catch, and I walked away thinking I could see how he was recruited to an SEC school at a skill position. And I was happy that he is here. :)

He played a bit of rb as a frosh, and then was switched to d-back and didn't play much last year.

is that the same van that had 93 yards on 39 carries at marshall last year?

http://www.herdzone.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/travon_van_716407.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

R-FRESHMAN SEASON (2011): Named to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team...Carried the ball 143 times for 551 yards and three scores...Had a season-high 17 carries for 114 yards and a 69-yard touchdown run at Tulsa...Caught 21 passes for 171 yards...Snared six passes for 68 yards in the win over East Carolina, including a 24-yarder that set up the game-winning touchdown in overtime.

Rushing: VAN, Travon 4 - 39 rushes for 93 yards, 2 TDs

Receiving: VAN, Travon 4 - 8 catches, 72 yards

So combining his frosh season where he played all season as a running back and his sophomore where he played 3 games as a running back he had 887 all purpose yards on 207 touches or 4.3 yards per touch

awesome. thanks brint. all i could find was last years stats on him. what's your take on his numbers? 182 carries for 643 yards is a good sample set. comes to about 3.6 a carry. why do you think he had a low average? did they put him in a lot on short yardage, bad oline, injured?

Remember when Brody arrived? How many PAT's did he kick the ball into the ass of the center? Quite a few times if remember correctly. I think Lider will get the kinks worked out and become a very good kicker for the Griz.

I hope you're right but I have my doubts. The kid has a very powerful leg. There is no doubt about his strength and I don't doubt that he spent all summer working on his skills. Yet he does not have accuracy. The only consistency I've observed is his tendency to hook the ball. At this point in his career, after a full year as the starting kicker, accuracy shouldn't be an issue.

Perhaps I'm a drama queen... or do I just remember last year as well... this looks hauntingly familiar.

Kicking game, another reason I miss Hauck...

+1

He emphasized it and we dominated at it back then.

Any idea who is winning the the kick returners job this year?

Naccarato and Henderson right now. I'm sure the UW transfer will get a crack to

For some reason whenever Lider misses a kick, I feel compelled to bust a football helmet by slamming it into the ground....

This is hauntingly familiar!
