08/12 scrimmage [merged threads]

McKinney looked very comfortable, but his wide open misses made me cringe. Also, Carver's drop over the middle made me want to throw a helmet and I didn't even have one.

Scrimmage was fun to watch overall, except for the drunk pecker head that sat by me. Really dude? Gotta come to a preseason scrimmage schockered? One of the LBs told him to STFU at one point too which made me laugh.

"I think for their (the quarterbacks) first time out of the blocks they did some good things and they did some bad things, but it was a very good learning experience for them tonight," Delaney said. "They had some good throws and had a couple of horrific throws too. I think they panicked a couple of times, but that's not unexpected at this point of time. All four of them took a lot of snaps, and that's just a work in progress.

"I think Trent might have a slight edge because of his running ability, but the other guys had their moments too," Delaney said. "I thought Shay and Adam did some good things, and I also think that Brady Gustafson in an awfully talented young guy at that position."

Think that was Gratton and not Carver but maybe I'm wrong, both have long blonde hair so I might've mixed the two up.

The Stanford qb has talent, can throw accurately, and can run. His first series was terrific. McKinney is a nice runner and threw some nice passes. Gustafson can throw the ball, and threw well under pressure a couple times. Except for Saylor, not much size at receiver. Kemp was on the field, but I don't recall him getting a pass thrown his way. Not many screen passes or swing passes.

Canada didn't play, did he?

Warren looked good too. Hardy caught a few. Gratton's pass down the middle was in heavy traffic and would have been a terrific catch. Warren the Adam B were not on the same page on the last pass, which was intercepted.

The first team o-line looked good.

The punter can really boom the ball.

The backers were all over the field. Timmer was helping coach.

Walden looked good. Not many touches for Nguyen. Moore is a freight train.

Nice and appreciative crowd. Nice night.

It was no. 8, Gratton. Didn't notice Carver. Was he out there?

Dammit it was Gratton. Damn hippies.

Carver was in Coach D's doghouse yesterday, wonder if he was benched tonight. I didn't see him at all out there.

It was sure nice being out there under the lights and not baking. I'd like to see our first couple of games played at night. Sitting in the north stands when it is 90 degrees (more like 120 in the sun :silly: ) sucks when compared to how it was tonight.

Surprized that it was only a little over 600 fans showed up; I would have thought at that time (8:30 pm on a Sunday) there would have been closer to 20,000.

Carver was on the sideline in shorts and t-shirt...let's just say he didn't look injured.

Anyone know what's up with Canada or Gamboa? Doesn't look serious, hopefully it was just precautionary to hold them out.

I wish the powers that be in the athletic department shared your thoughts :cry:.

McKinney is another Gerald Kemp...... both of whom are not FCS caliber QBs, and should be playing other positions. Just because McKinney is a good runner, does not make him a QB. It took us 4 years of hope and prayer with Kemp to finally realize that he was NOT a QB. It will be the same with McKinney. He will start, flounder, make drive-killing mistakes, over-throw wide-open receivers, and interceptions.

I hope that Rosey will figure this out early, and replace him with Brez. Most people do not understand the cerebral element to playing QB. it is much more important than just throwing and running. It involves reading the defense, going through your receiver progressions, audibling out of plays that will not work against that particular defense, etc. DD had it. Ochs had it. Edwards had it. Berquist had it. Will McKinney ever have it? Highly doubtful. But Brez will have it. You could see it last night. He was light years ahead of the other three in reading the defense, and he is very young. He will get better and better with playing time. He has some of the same qualities as DD and JJ. Same Size, smart, quick, can run with the ball. Can avoid the sack.

Couple of comments regarding previous posts. First, it was obvious watching Brez that he has some speed. For those of you who think that everything you read on Rivals or Scout is the gospel, it is not. Brez is plenty fast enough to be an effective runner in the offense the Griz are using. Yes, he needs to bulk-up a bit, as all freshmen do. JJ was not much different in build as a freshman. He will hit the weights and get stronger. We shouldn't worry about him taking a pounding, if our O-line does its job. He should not have to run the ball much if our running game with our backs is working. It is supposedly our strength. You don't want your QB carrying the ball all that much, risking injury.

Bottom line, of the four QBs I watched last night, McKinney should be playing another position, Smithwick hyphenated is never going to start here. He is Nate Montana with half the ability. Gustafson will be a good one, and Brez has the potential to be as good as Jordy. Just my opinion.

Please keep in mind that McKinney has the luxury of playing with the starters. The other three had to play with subs. Big difference. How would Brez and Gus look playing with the first team "O"?

Oh, one more thing for the benefit of Cat20-something-or-other. I wish he were present at the scrimmage to see "Rainbow-Armed" Brez throw that 20-yard out pattern to Cam Warren to end the scrimmage.

I don't know if I'm going to be the voice of reason here or not. I wanted desperately to be there but it's harvest time. From reading, qb 1 and 2 played with the 1 and 2 defense and had a tough time but qb3 playing against the 3 defense had a great night and is clearly the best. Again, this is just from reading this thread. I would like to know how the guys working against the #1 Defense did against the #1 defense then how did the guys do against the #2 D and then #3 D. Otherwise it is horribly flawed. After all, I threw for 17 touchdowns the other day with the middle school kids at the park so I should probably start, right?

McKinney was with the 1s, Brzczeck and SSH shared time against the 2s, Gustafson was against the 3s.

I suppose the 4 drops (Gratton, Pierson twice, Saylor) one being a would-be 50 yard TD and the other 2 being for first downs on 3rd and short were his fault in passing as well?

I think one thing that needs to be remembered is this system requires the QB to be a good runner as well. It's hard to compare McKinney (or JJ or Brzczeck) to prior Griz QBs because this system requires a QB that can run nearly as often as he throws. At the FCS level the sacrifice of completion % is usually made to meet that, I think JJ was under 60% completion in many games until the team really heated up in November.

Additionally McKinney did not make any drive killing mistakes last night while Brzczeck made one. Trent did over throw open WRs on 3rd down but he saw where the WR was and went for it and threw to the right target. Meanwhile on a would-be TD drive Brzczeck tossed an interception on an obvious mis-communication.

I do think Trent needs to settle down in those long passes though because if he doesn't as Brzczeck learns this playbook more he'll take over the starting spot. I'm not down on either, I think in the next week or so they'll wind up battling for the starting spot and I like what I see from both at times.

I could easily see the season open with Trent and Adam splitting time to see who produces better in a live game situation.

Thanks to all the contributors for keeping us far away types informed...The concensus: Brzeczek is the real deal who only needs to learn the system.

Ah an expert on injuries from afar.

Come on man, did you watch him walk at all? He couldn't even bend his right leg, and had a soft brace over the knee.
