Colorado lost over $1m by playing in the Alamo Bowl

Spending $4.21m isn’t absurd if they made more than that or atleast in the same ballpark which they would have with a tier 1 bowl game. The problem is the tier 2 bowl game didn’t pay them nearly as much but they spent like it was a tier 1 bowl game.
A) they had to know what the payout was going to be
B) REGARDLESS of the payout, spending $4.21 MILLION dollars to take a team to a bowl game is ridiculous.

C I am not going to pay to read the article.
D Many of the big bowls require the invited teams to guarantee the number of tickets they will sell. That may account for part of $4+ million. Did the article I didn't pay to read say anything about that?

The audit found that CU overpaid head coach Deion Sanders and his assistants for postseason bonuses, misclassified the Alamo Bowl as a Tier 1 event, rather than a Tier 2 event; and didn’t have a budget for the game to control spending.

I’m sorry, but AZ is absolutely correct. The absurdity of spending $4.21 million on a bowl game of little relevance. National Championship or semi final game? I still don’t see it. That’s about $27,400 person if my math is right. I used 150 total staff and players to get that number. It appears a majority of the expenses were for required ticket purchases and band/spirit travel. $802,000 and $945,000. Add in Sanders and the assistants being overpaid and that is about $122,000. Sooo, you get $1,869,000 just for those three expenses. Athletic department related expenses were $1,796,000. Still doesn’t add up to the $4.2. Bottom line is 200+ band members going is crazy. Overpaying the coaches, incompetence. Nothing they could have done about the required ticket sales.

Alamo Bowl may be the best attended bowl in the country NOT included in the playoff. Why the Peach Bowl was included and not the Alamo bowl will forever remain a mystery. Routinely 55-65,000 people in the Bowl watching great games. In fact, in 2025 it was THE highest attended non-playoff game.
