UND got caught tampering with a player not yet in the portal and is now on probation this year. 😬

  • One year of probation.
  • A $25,000 fine.
  • A one-week ban on recruiting communications for the football program during the January 2027 notification-of-transfer window.
  • A 3% reduction in official paid visits in football during the 2026-27 academic year.
  • Three one-week bans on football unofficial visits during the 2026-27 academic year.
  • A one-year show-cause order for Stepps, during which any employing NCAA member school must restrict him from communicating with four-year transfer prospects during the entire January 2027 football notification-of-transfer window.
  • A one-game suspension for Stepps during the 2026 football season.

So once again the NCAA goes after the small fry when everybody and their brother knows that all the big schools are doing this on a regular basis. Huh. The more things change the more they stay the same.
Not all of the big schools are doing this but one big school Griz fans know is from personal experience is Jimmy Rogers Iowa State Cyclones.

I would bet money that more of the top FBS schools are doing this than the ones who aren't - they're just better at getting away with it than poor old North Dakota. Plenty of players have said outright that they've gotten calls from schools when they aren't even in the portal. If somebody wanted to do a big investigation, it could probably be done but the NCAA only ever goes after the low-hanging fruit.

Oh come on now. Ol Jimmy is pure integrity. Just ask SDSU and WSU.
I wonder how soon Ol Jimmy is going to have to rely on those WSU and SDSU connection when he gets ran out of Ames for failing to win half his games in the Big 12 with an FCS roster.

That is the extent of their power.
I certainly wouldn't dispute that, however back in the day I'm not sure they had much power then either. They didn't go after the Alabamas of the world when they were doing considerably bad things They were all too happy to punish little old Montana for giving out free hot dogs.

I think you’d be hard pressed to find a university that hasn’t tampered in some way or fashion.
I agree but a university that hasn’t ever tampered in some way or fashion is different than their football program actively tampering this offseason.

I understand that this is a very common sentiment, and one I share in a lot of instances. But, the NCAA came extremely close to giving Alabama the SMU treatment in 2002. Some other rather big penalties (some for things I don't think are a huge deal) against big programs are discussed in this: https://www.usatoday.com/story/spor...t-history-michigan-sign-stealing/85665979007/

I know and love the old Tarkanian quote as much as the next person, but sometimes I wonder how much of it is rooted in truth.

Well you see North Dakota's problem is they should have just stuck with feeding their athletes hot dogs and this would be a non-issue.
