I think it gives a good environment for looking beyond race compared to only seeing people who look like you on a day to day basis. It doesn’t show that there are structural limitations that limit someone’s mobility often more tied to economics rather than race. That can be picked up by traveling to areas that are culturally significantly different from home. For example traveling to Mexico or more segregated American cities on a fairly regular basis.

So what i read in your statement is white people can get along with blacks and asians as long as they share a similar economic and educational background.
 
True but there are more likely to be pockets of racism in cities and states where one race is over 85% of the population, such as Montana being 88.7% non Hispanic/Latino white according to the US Census.
Please post the peer reviewed study with the data you cite. Particularly interested in why Montana is more racist based on racial demographics. A link to the academic study will work. Thanks in advance.

I have appreciated Dr. Sowell's perspectives on just about everything. He is a true treasure.

Are you referring to Sowell’s example of Dunbar High School? If so, yes, that was harmful and an example of “fixing something that wasn’t broken “!

Maybe you should lead the charge to have Sowell’s degree rescinded because of his observations. That would be “virtuous”.

maybe you ought to post this kind of stuff in the political section, where it belongs.
 
Sounds like there could be a special meeting of the BOR….an offer perhaps?
Decision was made by group handling the search stuff to advance Dr Shinn up to the BOR for consideration. Most likely next steps would be BOR approval and offer - though I don't know if those things happen simultaneously or separately.

On behalf of the Presidential Search Advisory work group, I am pleased to share that the group and I have made a unanimous decision to advance the candidacy of Dr. Jeremiah Shinn to the Board of Regents for its consideration.

Dr. Shinn’s on-campus visit earlier this week affirmed our belief that he was an exceptional candidate who had, throughout the search process, repeatedly risen to the top of what we considered to be an outstanding and diverse field of applicants.

The quality of the talent pool from which we were able to choose and our confidence in selecting Dr. Shinn to recommend to the Board authenticates our approach to this task, which began with a firm commitment to an expedited yet comprehensive search. While bringing forward a single finalist during the campus visit stage of the search may feel different from more traditional approaches, it is consistent with the current national landscape for presidential searches and was an important factor in our ability to attract a superior and highly competitive pool of candidates. We are grateful for the campus community’s understanding as we balanced these considerations.

The process recognized the unprecedented number of open presidential positions at neighboring flagship universities, which required us to move swiftly to secure top candidates. Our goal from the outset has been to sustain UM’s momentum and positive trajectory while ensuring a stable transition to an extraordinary leader who embodied UM’s values, unique culture, and vision for the future.

We began by engaging AGB Search, a nationally recognized firm affiliated with the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges. The firm’s expertise was instrumental in soliciting input across the campus community to help us build a leadership profile and in recruiting more than 70 accomplished leaders from across the country to apply.

While the timeline was accelerated, thoroughness was uncompromised. Our close partnership with the search firm guaranteed adherence to the high standards and broad engagement expected of a national presidential search.

I am grateful to the members of the work group, representing UM’s shared governance leadership and university partners, who recognized the gravity of the task and who committed to intensive vetting of every application, interviews, and discussions to ensure that the finalists aligned with UM’s strategic priorities. The members were:

Terms of the Employment Contract between the Montana Board of Regents of Higher Education
and Dr. Jeremiah Shinn, next President of the University of Montana

A. Annual salary of $467,197.
B. Initial contract term through June 30, 2029, in accordance with Board of Regents
policies and with the start date of July 1, 2026.
C. Retirement, health, life and disability insurance benefits provided under the
terms of the Montana University System group benefits plan and pertinent
statutes.
D. Annual deferred compensation will be $76,875.

A reminder that tomorrow at 9am is the special BOR meeting where they will officially hire Dr. Shinn as the next president of UM! A livestream is available if you wanna watch. I went back and watched the special meeting they had last year when they hired Tessman at MSU and it lasted all of 6 minutes. Christian and the regents made a couple comments and then they opened it up for public comment (nobody made any) and then that was it. They went behind closed doors to make their final decision since they had two finalists. Not sure how the meeting tomorrow will be conducted given that we only have one finalist and everybody knows it's Shinn. Any way, I'll report back tomorrow once the meeting concludes.
