BK's Salary Package

Magic 8-ball says...Chipper or u-haul.

Sane humans would say... -dude lost zero players after announcement. Looks like he is adjusting the defense...players like the new assistants...recruiting seems to be going well...access to the program seems improved...

I don't like instability of the arrangement, but admittedly, my 8-ball abilities can't penetrate Haslem's skull.
Lol. If the expectation of a Year-One coach is Chipper or U-Haul, there's not a scenario in college football where I'd take that job.

Yeah, he lost no players. He's STILL replacing 90% of the defense and the entire offensive line.

He's had to replace at LEAST 4 assistants (can't remember the exact number). For Haslam to intimate that this is "the same" team Bobby would have had is ludicrous.

Not to mention the schedule is orders of magnitude more difficult.

9-3 and I'm good with him staying as long as he likes.

The base pay is interesting, but I don't see it as a big deal. I also wonder about what others have speculated. Did BK go low to spread more money to assistants? Maybe it was agreed that the savings from the reduced base would be spread to other important areas, like recruiting or in-house NIL? Has he already saved plenty of money from his many other good FBS jobs? Was it his thought just to get signed up and start (if it was going to be only one-year), knowing a nice year would get him a nice longer term contract. Is he more of a team player, and not a selfish pig like some of the big-time coaches?
All great thoughts.

STILL a horrible look for the university.

This is just MY OPINION... UM needs to do better.

That base salary is pathetic. I know people making more who do a heck of a lot less.

This would be my recommendation to BK if he has a successful year, especially if they beat the Puds in Bozoland:

Base: $300K

NIL/TV: $150K

Incentives:
$10,000 for beating a team that made the FCS playoffs within the past two years
$5,000 for beating a ranked FCS team in the regular season
$10,000 for beating each top 10 ranked teams played (if any)
$12,500 for winning nine games
$15,000 for winning 10-plus games
$24,500 for beating Montana State
$20,000 for winning the Big Sky Conference championship
$15,000 for being named Big Sky Conference coach of the year
$50,000 for being named Eddie Robinson national coach of the year
$7,500 for making the FCS playoffs
$12,500 for advancing to the second round (plus $1,000 if hosting)
$15,000 for advancing to the quarterfinals (plus $5,000 if hosting)
$25,000 for advancing to the semifinals (plus $5,000 if hosting)
$75,000 for advancing to the national championship game
$150,000 for winning the national championship

Total if he met all incentives: $897,000.00

It's not what VIgen makes, but it's not far off.

Didn't know which thread to post this in, so I will drop it here.

I had the opportunity to spend some time with BK and staff this weekend. I won't predict how it all plays out with success on the field, but I was absolutely blown away by this guy. Shattered expectations. He is absolutely the type of person you would want your son playing for, and after spending a day with the staff even this fat old man was ready to run thru a brick wall for him.

If BK doesn't get a new contract, I'm not sure how many top quality candidates are going to be lining up for this job at that pay range. WAY more pressure but lower pay than other Big Sky teams seems counterintuitive.
If this position is open after the season, I suspect there is zero chance the pay range is similar to the contract BK agreed to. I highly doubt the pay range is similar if BK gets extended. The reality, I don't think the pay range of this contract will have any impact on what they would offer in an actual head coach search.

I guess we'll have to wait and see.

If we open up a search next offseason, I bet they would offer up a base salary of like $230-250k. HHB is correct that this is all circumstantial with getting $175k this year. If he gets renewed then he’ll easily get over $200k next year if not more.
Which is still dogshit for the scrutiny of the position.

You are sure banging the drum over something that is a big nothing.
Not beating a drum, just pointing out that we have a huge imbalance between risk / reward (scrutiny/ reward) for our head football coach, and it makes it difficult for Sustained success.

Obviously my wishful griz colored glasses hopes BK kicks ass this season, isn't offered a more lucrative position elsewhere due to the success, and ultimately signs a great multi year contract here and we sustain it. Because he is making a difference thus far recruiting wise for the studs in state, which is a huge deal.

I'm wondering - do we have the same eye on this if it was officially recognized as an interim head coach or not?

The pay rate certainly implies "interim" rather than "one-year" contract - which during Bobby 1.0, all the head coaches in the MUS had one year contracts - I'm too lazy to look up and can't remember when it "officially" changed to be able to do more than 1 year renewals.
