Facilities, strength program, analytics

NDSU doesn't even have a stadium. They are a tenant of the Fargo Dome which is not on campus.
The Fargo Dome is across the street from campus. NDSU doesn’t have the same game day experience as UM. It seems as though their fans have gotten apathetic and there is more demand from the Vikings and UND hockey than anything in Missoula. The vintage Fargo Dome when we played there in 2014 and 2015 was up there with WaGriz and a majority of group of 5 teams in terms of game day experience.

There is simply no reason the Grizzlies can’t compete with any FCS school. None, nada, zip, zilch or whatever else you wanna say. All the structural pieces exist and are on par or are superior. Coaching, recruiting, player development. That’s where the rubber meets the road - or sometimes, it doesn’t.

I'm not really sure anyone could answer this unless they had participated in both programs as either a coach or a player. I can look at pictures, but that doesn't really tell us a lot. I think this is a good conversation starter, but I'm not sure what individual exists in the world that could accurately make the comparison.
Ty Timmer who played for Griz and did medical school or residency at NDSU. He told me the programs are run remarkably similar. He was comparing to Hauck’s program.

How do our facilities and resources stack up to NDSU and MSU? I am curious to see if this is an area where we could improve?

From research it sounds like NDSU is far and away built more like an FBS program with the facilities they have and how many quality control and analytic positions.

Is this something we need to invest into?

How does our Strength program match up with these teams? Do we have specialists? How does our nutrition compare? Recovery?

Curious to see if anyone close to the program or with knowledge can enlighten me.
Where are you getting your second paragraph? Thx.

No matter how good your strength and conditioning program is, you need more than just a few months to develop players. That is why it goes hand in hand with incoming freshman and a robust walkon program. If you live in the portal with short term players none of it really matters much.
FBS players often come from strong strength programs.

NDSU opened the Nodak Insurance Football Performance Complex in 2022—a $50 million, privately funded facility featuring a full-size indoor turf field, LED lighting, multiple camera decks, locker rooms, weight room, and fueling station. It was designed by the same architects who worked on NFL facilities for the Vikings and Seahawks.

I just have no idea of knowing how far apart we are from this, if at all.

I’d be curious to know, I wonder if NDSU actually saves money by renting, not owning, the Fargo Dome.

facilities are all very similar the biggest difference is at Montana the Locker rooms have two ply toilet paper while NDSU and SDSU single ply. MSU this last off season chose pine cones for wiping which many believe has been the difference in putting them over the top.

Retired Strength coach here: Missoula has a very good S&C facility. Most of the top tier FCS schools are comparable. What matters most is a periodized plan and a good teacher/coach who has the trust of the players and develops individual relationships.

That doesn't really answer the question though, which is, with all these advantages in facilities etc, why do the lines get continually pushed around in the trenches? Something in the strength and conditioning program must need improvement.

It seems to come back to Dan Ryan. He is supposed to be the good teacher/coach who comes up with the periodized plan.

I’ve been inside the Fargodome and “performance complex” many times. The dome is just awful and while the complex is a nice practice facility, to quote Allen Iverson, “we talkin ‘bout practice man, practice.” Practice facilities are like boobs, some are much nicer looking than others but at the end of the day they’re really all the same. “We’re talkin ‘bout practice man!”

They have the Nodak Insurance Football Performance Complex that is designed similar to NFL training complexes and matches up with a lot of FBS schools. Our stadium is great for gameday, but not year round training.

Look back at Griz lineman and their size when they are freshman and 2-3 years later. The gains are pretty amazing. How did the Griz develop a former NAIA QB into an NFL lineman? The last time the Griz played NDSU they beat them. The Cats have had better offensive lines the last few years I agree. But there could be multiple factors including that they landed better lineman. Having the 4th O Line coach in 4 years doesn’t help either. Griz offensive line is so much better than it was under Stitt. Improvement is needed to win it all I agree. But to dump this all on Dan Ryan is very simple minded thinking. And to keep referring to him as a journalism major with all the strength and conditioning training and certifications he has is just ignorant.

Dylan Cook was a really really big Human even when playing QB in High School. His potential was always going to be on the line. He made the decision to switch positions and take an opportunity at a much much better place. Weight gains have been impressive, but I am more concerned how we look in the 4th quarter. This guy could be great, but missing on some talent. I have no idea.

Dylan Cook was also in Matt Nicholson’s strength program for 3 years and Dan Ryan’s for 11 months so he might not be the best example to use.

Most of these guys come in at 6'4 240 or in some cases less. Dylan was big and talented but he never trained or coached up to be a linemen. Griz staff did a great job helping him develop. Outside of Cat games Griz played better in 2nd half. The first Griz game the Cats ran out the clock much of it using Lamson legs not pounding the ball. The 2nd game the game turned on Lamson and Taco making a play on 3rd and 20. Both games were good games. The 2nd closer than the score. Griz moved the ball in both games. The year before the Griz didn't move the ball at all. The 2025 team was much better than the 2024 team including the offensive line. I think people forget that because it sucks losing to the Cats. With the players the Griz have back on offensse and the additions I think Griz will have another high powered offense. People are focusing on the starters lost on defense but there were a lot of players that played significant minutes last year and performed well coming back and the additions look promising. The Griz just have to get better on defense (not necessarily dominant) just better and they can beat anyone next year.
