Griz Football Product

So here’s what I think is being missed and something that the boomers on this board don’t understand. Modern football is akin to selling a product. One of the biggest killers of any once great company is lack of innovation and complacency.

Our football product and athletics department in general is so stale it’s an absolute shame. We seriously still play a Jay-Z song as our run out? How many times can we drag out our throwback colors and brag about the 95 chipper?

Imagine AT&T deciding to double down on land line phones in the late 90’s instead of revamping as an internet and mobile provider? That is exactly what Griz athletics and football under Haslam and Hauck 2.0 have become.

You don’t hire the old guard to innovate and bring you into the modern era. You do what MSU has done the past 15 years. At this point Vigens selling the new iPhone while Hauck and Haslam are convinced they can still make their quarter hawking Sky-tel pagers.

well said....I tried to say something like this...yes, Griz still have the old flip-phone...years back
it was the hottest thing on the market.

You make some interesting points. The going back to 1995 is way old and the music needs to be updated. It must be the same playlist made for a majority of football teams...only older.

Such a dumb take. Hauck has been to the chipper and semi-finals since he has been back. The Griz were in the toilet after he left, other than Pflugrad's team. He has made the Griz relevant again. MSU is just doing better, it happens.

Generational sea change takes time, but once you reach a tipping point, it’s hard to stop. Our biggest competitor has been chipping away for years and suddenly, they own the entire market.

If you want to stay relevant you have to keep powering your fly wheel. We stopped doing this right when Haslam became AD and now the momentum has stopped. The innovative vision that started with Dennison and Don Read was really kicked into gear by Wayne Hogan, an incredibly innovative AD.

Old heads like Hoops don’t get it and never will. That good ole boy complacency has killed our program, university and Missoula in general.

Bobby needs a social media manager!!
You joke, but this is what moves the needle with kids these days. It’s a College Game Day/Pat Mcafee world. You need a charismatic coach who can help promote your brand.

We have a bunch of coaches who want to recruit kids by telling them about the time Jimmy Ferris bet everyone on BV corner at Stocks that he could beat a horse in a foot race.

100% on point. MSU a not afraid to take chances and try new things. UM is paralyzed and afraid to put the product at risk and try something new. Paralyzed is the perfect word. I think it is less Hauck than it is Haslam. Need a fresh approach next year, and if not then we need fresh faces making decisions in the operation of the athletic department.

If you think on it, Haslam is pretty gun-shy after having to fire Stitt. I think he thinks if he rocks the boat too hard he’s gonna lose Bobby, have another bad season or two then get fired. Right now it’s safe to keep things where they are. It’s comfy, nobody is going to get after an AD that presides over a football team that went 13-2.

Suggestions for "new things" to try? Be specific about "chances" he and his coaches should take.. Us old geezers mostly like to see the teams we root for win. Hauck's UM teams have won over three-quarters of their games, including the span since he returned as UM coach, with four 10-win seasons (generally considered a base-line for success). Would we like to see a Natty? Sure (wife and I need new NC memorabilia),but I fail to see how replacing a wildly successful coach is going to make the program better. FWIW: I have never met Hauck, and never expect to. I see what people have written about him and a few TV interviews. Cannot fathom the vocal an virulent hate exhibited here on eGriz. Makes me wonder how much of it is personal ... individuals who thought they should be recruited, or even play for the Griz and didn't make it. Don't know and don't care. I'm a numbers guy – remember me ? – and the numbers are damned impressive.

Haslam is so gun-shy, weak and timid that he was going to EXTEND Stitt. Once Kyle Sample brought it to Twitter the Washington boys threatened to pull $. That is the only reason Kent “Knock-Knees” Haslam didn’t renew him.

I’m talking about keeping the program relevant. I was around to see the 95 run in person, was in college during the 01 season. You know who wasn’t? Gen Z and younger who are your prospective students and the target demographic. Right now, they are Cat fans. UM is cringe to them.

Until we change the culture, including the Gameday experience and move on from “The Pride and Tradition” we will continue to fade into irrelevance.

Also, 13-2 against a schedule of schmo’s means squat when your chief rival are national champions. Wow, we beat some 4 loss MV teams and Central WA… amazing. When’s the last time Booby won a marquee road game? WA was awful, doesn’t count.

Any team the Griz has beaten has to be “awful”, right?

Beating JMU in the semis isn’t a “marquee” road win for you? It doesn’t get any more marquee than the semi finals. Half of the 2015 team that got Ash fired was also Gen Z. Gen Alpha is the group who doesn’t know the Griz as the top team in Montana.

IDIOT!

To keep this on thread, essentially yes. Why? Because we don’t schedule good OOC games anymore and play in a weak conference.

It’s part of the problem. Kent relies too much on people who just want to come and have some luke warm Busch Lattes and bum Zyns while their wives aren’t looking. 🥱

If we aren’t going to have exciting regular season games like the 95 win over BSU, we could at least not have to watch Monte shimmy around to Kid Rock for the 1,000th time.
