The value of a successful football team / visible football coach to your campus

UND finished with a winning record and won their first playoff game 30-6 this season.
I guess I missed that, I thought UND had missed the playoffs.

I stand by my point. If the ball had bounced the other way twice this year, or if Gillman didn’t break 10 tackles behind the line of scrimmage every game, we wouldn’t have gotten a bye. And the cats are beating us at our own game and being innovative.

The Griz literally followed this blueprint in the 90's and 2000's under Read, Glenn, and Bobby 1.0. That is what is so frustrating. A key part was also the person in the President's office, George Dennison. He understood this better than most. Then the lost decade of the 2010's occured and put the UM way behind the neighbors and now we are trying to catch up.

Cignetti has done a great job. The Admin would do well to emulate it.
The whole problem is they do not need to. It's about money. Fans keep buying tickets and paying crazy prices for them. We need big changes and hopefully we will see it at the end of Hauck's contract. As fans we have to suffer another year. If you think I am wrong take a look at the transfer portal for who the griz are recruiting. Pathetic.

So true. Due to recency bias, people like to bring up the leadership of Crudzado, while forgetting that George Dennison oversaw record increases in enrollment, numerous campus construction projects and at the time one of the greatest fundraising campaigns in university history.

I had a buddy connect me with the Joe Pomp pod, which was tough for me at first as a GFP'er to see a 10 or 12 minute episode and think you can really get much out of it :ROFLMAO: . However, his pod is great for a quick hit on something, and the one he did the other day was on the value of Curt Cignetti to Indiana.

It's a paid subscription on his substack: https://huddleup.substack.com/p/curt-cignetti-is-the-most-valuable

He summarizes it well in a long tweet:
You can also search "Joe Pomp Podcast" in any podcast app and it'll pop up and that's free to listen to

It boils down to this, like it or not;

1. Football and football SUCCESS is the front door to introducing college to prospective student

2. A visible, connected, and engaged football coach brings in higher dollar donors.

3. Football success = more out of state applicants = incredible growth in tuition dollars

4. Growth in attendance / tuition dollars = more money for research, academics, and programs.
who is the intentional increase in out of state students at the expense of in-state students helping? administrator's wallets. yeah, there may be some trickle down of the extra $$ to other things, but i doubt it is a large percentage. also, what is this move telling the parents of indiana kids who pay taxes and are hoping for an affordable college education?

Or if the ball had bounced the other way in the Missoula brawl we win and host through the playoffs.

I think the biggest difference between the two programs recently is Hauck relying more and more on the portal and Vigen minimizing portal recruits and continuing to recruit youngsters and developing them over time to compete. I know in my mind what seems to work best.

Wait, don’t people keep saying our recruiting is bad? He was top notch but we didn’t get the guys we wanted? How does that work?
I think the Portal recruiting has been remarkable. But they haven't done as well with the in-state HS players.

What it does mean however is that we lost arguably one our most important Coaches which makes me nervous for the future.
Bobby encouraged him to go. And expand his body of work and contacts. And pointed out that the senior coaches he knew had all retired except for Bobby. Beers, Pflu and Delaney. It's not the first time Green looked around.

I would think Bobby would have encouraged him. Bobby might have said , I am leaving this place along with all my old buddies after next year so you will need to find a better home then. Hoops is carrying my fishing gear so you will not be needed.
