Your post is okay, but it's clear that changes have come and are continuing to come, and almost no team will get the bulk of its starters from high school in the coming years (unless the Portal/NIL are drastically changed, which I doubt). Especially FCS teams. The best way for UM to do well would be to magically have a large pot of NIL and attract players who may be dropping to the lower rung of FBS in order to get more playing time and get some money, or decent money. Of course, there are some exception. Like Ah Yat. And the good news, is that's who I I want to build the future Griz team around.
This year, we continue to get D2 and NAIA guys. I wonder if any school does better there. Of course, we need some MT guys. We need to pay the top guys at UM some decent money. I.e. Gillman, Bergen, Gubner, etc. We need to be able to pay certain transfers some decent money. I don't know where that money comes from. It seems to me that UM should be a terrific place for a kid who could start at the lower run of FBS, but wants to make sure he gets good playing time, gets some NIL payment more than a pittance, and has a chance of winning big and going to the national championship game.
Portland St. Top guys should come to UM. Barnum was a friend, Barnum's son and Robbie. Are there anymore at Central WA. Look at what Wortham accomplished at UM. The Solo's of the world. He played himself into NFL tryouts. He seemed to improve as the season went on.
Why wouldn't very good receivers and OL want to play at UM. Lots of passing from good QB's. Lots of pass-blocking. A fun offense. And a fun and wide open, man-playing and blitzing D. Let's all get out on the road. Ha.
I'm glad Ah Yat didn't get hurt, because Jensen had hurt his throwing shoulder in pre-season pretty bad. Even when he got back, it was never clear if he could actually play a whole game. He wasn't getting beat out when Flowers was playing in pre-season; he was hurt. Recall that Bobby had said early on that he felt sorry for Jensen. I assume this was because he was hurt and unable to practice and compete fully. My info is from a direct source, by the way. His wife.
It's a new world out there. Hopefully, the coaches can keep bringing in good kids who will be good teammates and buy-in right away, and not get in trouble. It worked this past season.
