Defensive Scheme

It’s hard to win road playoff games when you rarely play in them due to winning the Big Sky and having a top 2 seed in the playoffs every year.

Hike, can you please indulge us clueless fans on what caused those big plays, how relevant it is to how the Griz defense did overall, how it is related to the current defensive scheme and what you would have called on those plays instead using revisionist history?

I would say the D was pretty good overall. They weren’t among the best in the nation like our offense but they were among the best in the Big Sky.

Maybe it isn’t the scheme and it is the fact that we are losing the high school recruiting battle to MSU so we are having to get starters learning our system from scratch every year from the portal. Starters learning the scheme from scratch will not do as well as starters who have developed and spent years learning the scheme as depth guys. That will hold true regardless of what the scheme is.

Defense doesn't need to complicated though.

Brock Spack, the coach of Illinois State, said it best I think: "The less you do, the better you are." Keep it simple, play fast, get better talent. School's like EWU, PSU, Poly, even Idaho, have to play schematic games to win because they cannot get talent like the top FCS schools. That is, or should not be the case, at programs like UM, MSU, and the DSU's. Nobody else has the advantages those 4 do, and there's no excuse for them to not consistently be amongst the top programs in the nation. The floor is so much higher than at other places. 8-9 wins is the bare minimum, and even that's being very generous.

And I would disagree. Serviceable? Yes. Good? Good wouldn’t give up 8 min game clinching drives. Good wouldn’t give up umpteen 3rd and forevers to multiple teams. Good wouldn’t have a defensive line that gets washed like last week undies.

Good gives up drives like that on occasion. It just the way it is in football and in sport. You of all people should know that. It happens to virtually every team in most years.

Complicated D's and calls can do more things and do them better, if they are executed well. Obviously, you need to have a team that can learn and handle the complicated D's. That's not always the case. The Griz had their most uncomplicated D scheme going into the first Cat game.

How about 13 wins, which the Griz have had 2 of the last 3 seasons. That's way more than 8-9 wins. What planet are you from?

I wasn't criticizing the 13 wins. Not really sure what you're talking about. I was just mentioning in the broad spectrum, that those 4 programs have a very high floor and should never dip below 8-9 wins, that's their baseline. Wasn't saying that just for UM, but for all 4 programs I listed.

In college football, with a limited amount of time to practice and study, the best defense is a relatively simple defense. It's what Saban did, what Kirby Smart does, what Corey Hetherman (ace DC at Miami) does, etc, etc, etc. Sure in the NFL you can try to run stuff like Brian Flores, but there's not a lot of coaches that can successfully implement a scheme like that. That's why you so often hear coaches preach to keep defense simple and prioritize playing fast and gap sound.

Sure and if it was just that one drive and not all the other nonsense that this defense has given up I’d agree they had been pretty good but given as a whole, I won’t

I would say 2nd in our conference is pretty good overall. They had low moments but the stats say they were pretty good, not great overall.
