First off, what a season for the Griz. There were some truly talented players, and the offense showed flashes of excitement we honestly haven’t seen in Montana football in a long time. A 13–2 record is something many programs would celebrate, and on paper, it looks great.
That said — I’m not over the moon about it.
When you look closer at who we played, there are teams we should beat every single year: Northern Colorado, Portland State, Idaho State, to name a few. Those aren’t just wins — those should be statement wins. The real measuring stick has always been Montana State, the Dakota schools, and the true top tier of the FCS.
So ask the hard question: what’s our record against them?
I’m tired of riding the “we’re almost there” train when we’re clearly not. The games that matter most are the obvious ones, and both statistically and in wins/losses, we’re worlds behind those programs right now.
Add in the continued commitment to the 3–3–5 defense and the lack of recruiting emphasis within the state of Montana, and it feels like the staff has lost sight of what Griz football is supposed to be. We’ve chest-pounded “we’re the Griz” for so long that the identity behind it has faded.
The Bobcats get it. Love it or hate it, that’s just a fact.
We’re no longer a defense that leans on you and wears you down, and we’re not a swarming unit that makes you pay either. How many times this year did we all say it out loud:
“Watch — it’s 3rd and 20… they’re going to convert.”
I truly believe it’s time to move on from the 3–3–5 and get back to our roots. And we need to start putting Montana kids first again. Montana kids — and coaching — beat us on Saturday.
Yes, I’m ranting. These are my opinions. But I’m absolutely open to respectful, constructive conversation.
Struggling to put away teams we should thrash, going 13–2 without a Big Sky championship, losing to the Bobcats twice, and being mediocre against the top 4–5 FCS programs isn’t where this program should be.
All constructive here — let’s hear your honest thoughts.
I’ll always bleed maroon and silver and will support the Griz no matter what.
