Griz honest thoughts

First off, what a season for the Griz. There were some truly talented players, and the offense showed flashes of excitement we honestly haven’t seen in Montana football in a long time. A 13–2 record is something many programs would celebrate, and on paper, it looks great.
That said — I’m not over the moon about it.
When you look closer at who we played, there are teams we should beat every single year: Northern Colorado, Portland State, Idaho State, to name a few. Those aren’t just wins — those should be statement wins. The real measuring stick has always been Montana State, the Dakota schools, and the true top tier of the FCS.
So ask the hard question: what’s our record against them?
I’m tired of riding the “we’re almost there” train when we’re clearly not. The games that matter most are the obvious ones, and both statistically and in wins/losses, we’re worlds behind those programs right now.
Add in the continued commitment to the 3–3–5 defense and the lack of recruiting emphasis within the state of Montana, and it feels like the staff has lost sight of what Griz football is supposed to be. We’ve chest-pounded “we’re the Griz” for so long that the identity behind it has faded.
The Bobcats get it. Love it or hate it, that’s just a fact.
We’re no longer a defense that leans on you and wears you down, and we’re not a swarming unit that makes you pay either. How many times this year did we all say it out loud:
“Watch — it’s 3rd and 20… they’re going to convert.”
I truly believe it’s time to move on from the 3–3–5 and get back to our roots. And we need to start putting Montana kids first again. Montana kids — and coaching — beat us on Saturday.
Yes, I’m ranting. These are my opinions. But I’m absolutely open to respectful, constructive conversation.
Struggling to put away teams we should thrash, going 13–2 without a Big Sky championship, losing to the Bobcats twice, and being mediocre against the top 4–5 FCS programs isn’t where this program should be.
All constructive here — let’s hear your honest thoughts.
I’ll always bleed maroon and silver and will support the Griz no matter what.

Just want to add now listening to colters podcast.. and boom they nailed it and it's exactly how I feel. Glad im not far off the rails in my thoughts!!!

Anyone who thinks that Schmidt and Colter know what they are talking about shows how little they know about football and Griz football. No one of importance or influence is going to listen to that clown, and his sidekick Colter.
Schmidt and anyone else who played for the Griz or had immediate family members play for the Griz in the last 20 years like Colter is going to have more credibility than you with everyone on egriz. You are an irrelevant loud mouth. Never played for the Griz, never even attended UM.

Nope, they don't have credibility because they are just grinding axes and have narratives. People who had dads play for the Griz are the ones with credibility. Ha. I know 100 times more about football and Griz football than you do. You don't know a damn thing. You are a waste of space.

I thought your dad left when you were a child? How could he give you relevance about the Griz if he isn’t around like Colter has from his brother who played for the Griz?

I agree with most of your thoughts. The two areas I feel a little different -
1. I don’t believe the Griz are worlds behind but the program isn’t growing or adapting or willing to change the way the top programs have. I’m not sure what the answer is but the question I ask myself is this- if our competition in Brookings and Fargo and bozo can build what they have built, then Missoula certainly can too.
2. Montana kids and coaches - yes win the instate recruiting but I don’t care where anybody is from, ndsu doesn’t win with mostly ND kids. Just get high character dudes.
At the end of the day , university brass and leadership will determine the fate and I hope they do whatever is necessary to build a program of winning games and graduating fine young men. Go Griz!

Both are way more connected to the program and former players than you will ever be.

You seem like championships aren’t important to you Hoops.

Your point re #2 is a fair one, you just need good players that will stick around, develop, and represent the university well. Some portions of that list are definitely easier with the best montana kids, especially the stick around part. You certainly have the resources to keep it built like the DSUs and lately the cats, but i think from afar there's been some blinders on at UM for awhile that refuse to acknowledge that the rest of the world has caught up and in some cases passed UM in facilities, player support, NIL, strength/conditioning, on and on and on. UM was the standard at this level for so long they forgot to notice they weren't any more.
That to me is where the lack of transparency in the program comes in. When the fan/public has no idea what the program is thinking, their recruiting goals, any of it, when you get just arrogant banality ALL THE TIME from leadership, it makes it hard to trust that they have the answers.
Sorry that got long. Just some observations from east of the divide.

Nope. My dad didn’t leave anything. He taught me many things.

Feel free to get your info from benchwarmers and brothers of former players. Feel free to ignore the coaches and players who actually fit in the field. Getting info from bench warmers and Never-Played-The-Gamers is just right for you. I suppose you don’t know any players or former players. Players who actually got on the field.

You seem a little upset and jealous that there are knowledgeable people, especially in regards to the current state of CFB, that disagree with you. But fear not I look forward to you freaking out on and lecturing me again on how our 3rd/4th and long defense is nothing to worry about like you did a few weeks ago.

I am not jealous of anything. Completely secure and confident where I sit. You don’t understand football. You are a joke.

You are spot on. UM was the standard and top brass needs to commit to getting back to it. Missoula is reminding me more and more of grand forks. The locals don’t want to change, don’t want to grow or adapt. They want things to just stay the same as they were 20-25 years ago, and when that happens you get left behind. I remember when ndsu went D1 and the grand forks people said it will never work we’ll see you back in D2 in 5 years. Well guess what. NDSU had a visionary at the top named Joe Chapman and he is the root cause of why that program is where it today. He had a vision, he had great people around him to execute and he blew the F out of the good ol boy network and said this IS the future of bizon football. It takes balls. Big huge stones . Griz brass, get your blinders off or get left in the dust.

Considering you claimed my concerns about our tendency to give up 3rd and Long plays was unwarranted (in much more insulting language) I'm going to throw back my head and laugh at you 😂.

Maybe you don’t know what is going on, but many of us do.

Who’s caught up with UM on NIL? How do you think UM has been able to keep Gubner, Bergan and Gillman? With no NIL? You have no clue what some Griz players have been offered by other schools. My good friends and I do.

I said no such thing, to my recollection. Everyone has wanted the Griz to do better on 3d and long.
