Defensive Scheme

I think the age of the coaches is a real problem. The average age of our staff is like 60 and the youngest is Justin Green at 43? Recruiting is a young man’s game. Guys in their 20s and 30s can relate to teenagers better than 43 plus year olds can.

If you go to any coaching clinic or even look it up on YouTube, their are 2 DT’s in the 4 man front of the 4-3 defense the 3 technique (sometimes referred to as the under tackle) and the 1 technique (usually referred to as the nose).

Why would you think I would try to correct you? I love this stuff and discussions on X's and O's. I love the flexibility of the 3-3-5 but we are all just fans and see different things.
Maybe I'm not correct but I think it's remarkable that the griz put 11 new starters on defense this year, ran a notoriously complex defense and had one of the best defenses in the conference especially against the run.

Some value can some value can also be attributed to having young hungry guys on the staff. That’s what UM had in Bobby 1.0 and what MSU has now. Most of the hires in Bobby 2.0 are his boomer buddies that were hungry young coaches 20-30 years ago.

Couple generic notes: Playing a 5-0-5 (3 down front) vs a 3 or 4 man surface is silly without a tight overhang/rush. I haven’t watched enough film to know how often the grizzlies do that, or if they ever do.

Usually in 3 down (unless you are a tight front team, which the grizzlies are not) you rush a 4th to get to some type of 4 man push anyway, whether it be over, under, even, TE based, RB based etc.

The calls for 4-3 or 3-4 are silly vs 11 personnel, again in my not so professional opinion. Vs. 12 personnel or heavier sets, they are valid, but I would still disagree because you are in trouble when matched up vs slot sets.

I’m not saying game plans don’t contribute giving up points, but to me the front/structure stuff are fallacies. Execution, players not plays, and play calling in that order — are the reason teams give up points on defense, and in that order!!

I agree that Hauck has some really good coaches within the staff. They absolutely know how to evaluate talent which is why they have recruited the portal so successful. But IMHO they have gotten themselves behind the eight ball in player development and lost the recruiting battle within the state. That has forced them to look to the portal transfers to fill the holes instead of the next man up on the roster philosophy. That is not a recipe for long term sustained success.

Why is recruiting from the portal a receipe for disaster? Most schools are huge recruiters from the portal. Relying on development of young players is quaint, but not the way the modern world works. MSU didn't win the recent games because they won the in-state battle. They won because they played well and executed a nice game plan, and were fortunate with some good ball bounces and a couple dirty tackles, along with some key big plays. Even the recent big point margin, wasn't some huge game-whooping. It was a horrible 5.5 minutes where UM gave up 3 TD's and a huge good play by the Cats, and bad play by Griz, on 3d and 20 from the 12. Without that play, I say the Griz have a good chance of winning the game. The Cats how think they have invented football, because they made a few big plays and were fortunate. They will get their due. And some of the clueless Griz fans buy into this. I'm sure the Cats have plenty of unknowledeable fans, but I fear the Griz fans could be worse.

It can be a double edged sword, case and point alot of older coaches are or have struggled to adapt to NIL and the Transfer Portal. I think that's why ASU in particular got Dillingham and other schools are hiring Recruiting coordinators to assist.

Did I say it was a recipe for disaster? Uh no, I did not. I said it was not a recipe for long term success. The griz have obviously done well in the portal. We will agree to disagre here. To argue that the cats haven't won the in state recruiting battle in the last few years and that it didn't contribute to the outcome of this game is also something we can disagree about.

We have a great recruiting coordinator in Justin Green. The rest of the coaches are ancient.
