Rethinking my fandom

As I consider how upset I was at the results of today's game, I'm rethinking how passionate I want to be about this team going forward. I'll always be a Griz fan and I'll always love this team but I think I have to find a way to be a more casual fan. I can still come to a game or two in the fall (and scream my head off) and watch all the games on TV, but I have to be able to separate myself somehow so that I'm not so horribly disappointed when we lose to the cats every year. (Which seems inevitable as long as Bobby remains the coach which also seems inevitable.) Maybe someone around here can give me some solid advice on how to do this.
I coached little league for 15 years. After a loss I told my guys they had 30 minutes to be pissed. Then they needed to watch some mlb, go fishing, do something to make their mom mad, and think about practice tomorrow. It's just a game.

Griz defense was a white knuckler all season. Should’ve lost to UND and Eastern Washington. Closest Bobby has come to a championship defense was ‘23. But they eventually wilted under the big O-line of the Jackrabbits. Cats were better prepared, and more emotionally charged. They had the better playmakers who showed out in the biggest moments. Griz are a fine home team, but suck on the road in big games. And that will never change under Coach Hauck.

Honestly, I did not want a semifinal matchup against the Cats because of exactly this reason. And the same goes for the National championship game. I do not want to ever have a championship game against them either and I look at people who say, “how awesome would that be?!” And I’m just like, “no!”

A loss like this to your rival is devastating. It benefits the winning team immensely. Any Griz fan that is cheering for the Cats to win it all is in a backwards way rooting for Montana’s continued mediocrity because Cat success brings all the glory with it - better recruits, better momentum, etc.

Today sucked. I started the game pissed off with how we opened the game, then was immensely proud with how we fought back to take the lead. I had hope we’d hold on at that point, but that quickly faded.

Thankfully we had an early Christmas celebration today after the game and I quickly got over the pain of the loss by being surrounded by family. Still sucks, but I hope like crazy now that Illinois State wins the whole damn thing in two weeks haha.

Win or lose I’ll always be a diehard Griz fan. Although, something needs to change because losing in these big games is unacceptable. Fans becoming less committed is not a way to help the program, they need our support more than ever. I suggest we start with firing our strength and conditioning coach along with starting a better nutrition program.

I agree. I've been coming around on this team for a while now, but 2023 is the peak. I think we as fans should be happy with a semis run. It's what this team is about.

I don’t have as much trouble with it anymore, but it sure is familiar. I just realized one day that I’m not entitled to any particular outcome. Who TF am I to be mad? For me, it’s not about tempering expectations, it’s about not having any. After realizing that, everything is a bonus. I watched my alma mater play an FCS football game on ABC. Win or lose, it didn’t materially change my life. And I didn’t even have to use my AK.

You can’t enjoy winning without losing. You never learn anything from winning. Losing teaches you everything. Fandom is about supporting those who bleed for the thing you bleed for, it’s not about winning or losing, it’s about going into the fight together.

As a Cat fan, agree 100%. this win was awesome today. If we lost it would've been horrible. And worse if we played in a natty. So I dont want to play you guys in a natty either.

So this Cat is not here to sh!t talk. It was a close game. Alot closer than the final score.

I'm done drinking GRIZ Kool Aid early.
Meaning, I'll wait for a National Championship before taking a drink.

The 2023 team pleasantly surprised me.
The 2025 team got me believing they'd get us a Championship.

I hate losing, but sure would take 2023 results over 2025.

Healthy. No one on egriz has any control over any outcome in a game or any game. Unless you are a large donor, you don't even have any say in the program. These are kids playing a sport in college. It doesn't really matter. You being upset or joyful doesn't matter to the success or failure of the team. Be passionate about your own life, you at least have some control over that.

I've experienced some pretty bad sports losses as a fan. By pretty bad I mean really bad. If you're anything like me, you'll be pissed for a week and it'll be really painful to think about, but you'll move on, not think much about football for around 6 months, start gaining anticipation, and you'll be jacked by the time August rolls around. The only practical advice I really have is to maybe simplify how you watch. I don't know your game day routine, but perhaps you could tone it back a notch. Like if you tailgate and take shots before every game, maybe go to games but skip that part. If you like going to Red's (or wherever you guys have watch parties down the road there) maybe just sit back and watch from your couch. I might be talking out of my rear here, so bottom line, just remember that the Griz WILL be back next year competing for a natty, and that likely won't change for a long time.

Also I don't know if you like basketball, but you guys are the favorite right now for the conference, so there's that!

For once, I actually agree 👍 with you !!!

I remind myself that losing a football game is not a real problem, as opposed to, say, my kids getting cancer, or a drunk driver killing all of us on Bozeman's Huffine (which I am scared shitless of).

Or, just remind yourself that all of these teams will probably be forced into some kind of FBS situation in the future, and nothing will matter anymore at that point :ROFLMAO:

Being a fan means riding the highs and accepting the lows. Losses sting, but as Ted Lasso says, “sometimes the best thing you can do is be a goldfish and keep a short memory.” For me, sports are entertainment first. The real question isn’t “Did we win at all costs?” but “Did I enjoy the show?” And I did.

There are remarkable young men on both sides of the field, many of them from Montana, and I’m proud of all of them. I also genuinely enjoy the banter back and forth with uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends who happen to cheer for the other side. What we have is special, and it’s worth embracing. We got to do it twice this year!!

Thank you to the coaches and players for the hard work, effort, and heart you poured into this season. It was a lot of fun to watch, and I hope you had as much fun playing/coaching as we did watching. I look forward to doing it all again next year.

Go Griz!

I just watched the latest Mission Impossible, The final reckoning. One thing always amazes me is when Ethan Hunt pulls the mask off and appears in real time.
I am beginning to wonder if Coach Hauck isn't who we think he is and at some point pulls the mask off to reveal who he really is, Rob Ash.
His record is beginning to look that may be the case.

Both games this year were close.
