Notable Player Weight Gains

Body composition is huge. Of the guys I mentioned, it looks like really good weight. Not just muscle, but the mass looks very solid.
Thank you. I could have been better in phrasing my question. Didn't mean to imply they only gained fat weight, just curious to see how young weight trained individuals do these days in gaining muscle mass.

I used to work with Lance Dreher (2x Mr Universe) and Vinny Comerford (RIP) and they were always talking about how hard it was to gain muscle mass as you become more experienced with weight training.

It is in an intriguing question and thought. At this age especially the underclassmen, they are still becoming adults. So in some respects its easier to build mass with weight training, and proper caloric intake.

I know our athletic dept has invested heavily in their nutrition program over the past year +, they've got a dedicated nutritionist on staff and the champions center nutrition desk has been completely upgraded and is totall loaded up for the guys. My assessment is you can definitely tell by the eye test in the weight these guys have gained this season. Good weight gains, and great mass / body comp it appears.

Looks like he made PFF top 5 linemen in the nation this week as a freshman.
Absolutely crazy that he was able to put on 68 pounds over the last year. For some perspective, that’s more weight than Tony Mandarich “the Incredible Bulk” was able to gain in 4 years at Michigan State and only 12 pounds less than Cody Mauch put on over 5 his years at NDSU.

And that he must still move pretty well. It is impressive.

I think he put on 45(ish) lbs this year....60lbs from his signing day press release in 2024.

Which is still impressive.

Most of us eat until we're full--can you imagine trying to purposely increase your body weight between 10-30 %, maybe even more , and doing so in conjunction with a strength and conditioning program ?

I know there is a methodology for doing this for all football players, especially linemen, and it requires a lot of organization, planning and discipline--when to eat, how much to eat, how many calories, what to eat--protein, carbohydrates, fat, fiber, supplements, etc., when to eat and when to lift and do other strength and conditioning with S&C Coach Dan Ryan.. ( Do we have a training table for our kids where we feed them ? )

And I am hoping that Coach Ryan and colleagues discuss how to lose this weight after their playing days are over. I met Collin Dow from Billings Senior a couple of times in Missoula and Billings, and off the top of my head, he played OG for us @ 6-5, 310 during Bobby 1.0 about 15-16 years ago. Collin's dad, also a former GRIZ O lineman and whose picture used to be up in the MO Club --" Dowser," maybe still is, died at a relatively young age of a massive heart attack.

A friend of mine from Billings, now a Missoula attorney, that first introduced me to Collin in Missoula @'The MO Club during his playing days, told me that Collin wanted to shed his playing weight relatively quickly after his playing days were over and Collin made this well known ... And about 12-18 months after his GRIZ career ended, I saw and briefly greeted Collin at The Montana Brewing Company, " The Brew Pub," in Downtown Bilkings and just eyeballing him, he looked like his weight was down to 230-245 lbs, and I was very happy to see the new slim him knowing what had happened to his dad. !!!

I hope our football team has access to a dietician, and if not, maybe we should hire one at least part time for not only our football team but all of our GRIZ student athletes !!!
For what it's worth, and at risk of being accused of being a troller, MSU lists a dietitian on staff, under Strength and Conditioning program. Probably have interns also as the Registered Dietitian program is offered at MSU.

Trace Armstrong gained approximately 55 pounds from college to the NFL, going from around 205 pounds at Arizona State to 260 pounds upon entering the pros, thanks to a strict and intensive bulking program designed by his college strength coach. This significant weight gain was a deliberate effort to prepare him for the rigors of the NFL as a defensive end.
  • College to Pros: Armstrong went from 205 pounds at Arizona State to 260 pounds when he entered the NFL in 1989.
  • Bulking Program: His weight gain was the result of a structured program where he was "force-fed" by his strength coach, Tim McClellan, over four years, which involved four meals a day.
  • Purpose: This was a conscious and necessary preparation for the physical demands of playing in the NFL as a defensive end.

I saw Jon Skinner in Dillon a few years ago, he didn't lose his playing weight

1989, huh? Hmmm…

I see Jake Plummer ASU qb a few years from time to time I used to live in the same neighborhood as him in Colorado and he did not maintain his playing weight at all. He is possibly the only former player I know that probably weighs less than me. Orlando Franklin surprisingly is also very skinny nowadays.
