Instate Recruiting

I didn't ask just based on your paraphrasing.
Well. I’m the first to admit that I don’t look at the world through rose colored glasses. I’ve been here for a long time though, and that’s not changed. Again, if you don’t like what I say, skip over it or mute me. Its not going to hurt my feelings and we can stop wasting our time rehashing this

Haven't gotten to listen to the interview yet (will do that later today), but I'm assuming this all stems from the kid from Sentinel who committed to the cats over the weekend. First of all, I think it's important to point out that the kid had only one D1 offer and it was from the cats. He did not have an offer from the Griz so it's not like we lost out on this recruiting battle. Second of all, I actually think the Griz have done a pretty good job of recruiting MT this year. We have two of the top 5 players in the state already committed in Ehret from Belgrade and Snell from Billings Central. Not to mention that we already have two Missoula kids committed in Pyron and Link. Do we really care what high school in Missoula they come from? I personally don't. In total, we already have 8 MT kids committed in this class and 2 kids from small town MT as well. And we still have almost 2 months until the early signing period and there's some big in state names still on the board like Elias Bonner.

Plus look at this years team. There's all kinds of MT kids contributing. Rausch, Leonard, Detrick, Oven, Deck, etc. We're doing just fine. So one Missoula kid who didn't even have an offer from the Griz went to the neighbors. It's no big deal. Schmidt needs to learn to take a chill pill. He drools over transfers like Wortham but then says we shouldn't take transfers and should only recruit MT. Sounds a little hypocritical.

We had a total of 3 kids from montana in the last recruiting class......3. Hauck in the past used to champion that we were winning with montana kids that was his formula and it worked. Sprinkle in the out of state kids and a transfer here and there. It's not just 1 kid that we've lost on, a griz legacy and we don't even offer him? Theres not much to complain about right now the season is going great and they hit on the key guys in the portal but look how that formula panned out last year. The fear is not being able to continue success with depending on the portal.

I made this comment in the recruiting thread and it’s applicable here as well:

I don’t know I really like some of the in-state commitments we have coming.

Cats have what, 4 of the 5 “blue chips” from Vim’s list (a list that is just a starting point and not an exact science and definitely not a full proof list of where these kids will end up as contributors or players) and the Griz have the next 4 or 5 “partials” from from that list to the Cats 1. If you look at 247 rankings Griz have 2 of the top 5.

I’ll be willing to bet that some of those partials end up better than some of the blue chips. So as I see, cats got what look to be some studs and the Griz got some studs.

You could use your exact same argument with Hammond, who just committed to the Griz from Malta. He’s a bobcat family with Cats ties. Yet we got him. So in your view the sky must also be falling for the bobcats?

Ya and this recruiting class we have 8 MT kids so far. That's called improvement. Recruiting fluctuates year to year but it's been a good in state recruiting year for the Griz. And you can bitch about not getting a legacy Griz, but we got a legacy cat. Wesley Ehret's dad is Junior Adams, one of the best cat players of all time. Guess what? Shit happens. Things are going good for us in the in state recruiting battle.

I only asked because it is apparent you don't see the Griz through maroon colored glasses based on almost every post you make. It seems that you even make it your mission to hit the panic button over and over.

Exactly. You have to recruit to need. If the 4 best HS players in Montana are safties, does it make sense to recruit all 4?

The whole "we gotta have Montana kids" is so 1995 (since we're celebrating). Look, everyone wants to recruit from inside out. But because the cats got 6 state kids and we got 4 doesn't mean the GRIZ are losing the recuriting battle.

I love Schmidt, but he says a lot schmidt I'm not sure he truly believes just to get a rise out of people.

Not intereted enough to listen. On way to family wedding. When I post stuff, unusual post a summary. HomeGrown’s summary is enough for me. I don’t agree with Schmidt much of the time, but like him. I don’t like people who went to Bozeman high. Ha.

Who are MSU’s all-conference players from MT this year?

Who are MSU’s starters from MT?
Taco Dowler (Billings) and Adam Jones (Missoula) are the two headliners on offense. Paul Brott (Billings) and Kenny Eiden (Bozeman) are the headliners on defense. Brice Grebe (Melstone), Neil Daly (Billings), Cole Taylor (Great Falls), Caden Dowler (Billings), Braden Zimmer (Billings), Burk Mastel (Red Lodge), Rylan Schlepp (Bozeman) are all starters. Additionally, guys like Zac Crews (Missoula), JJ Dolan (Missoula), Colter Pitre (Helena) Ryan Krahe (Great Falls), Talon Marsh (Helena) and Rocky Lencioni (Bozeman) all rotate in and see a lot of action.

I enjoy Andrew, but I think he goes out of his way to make everything a hot take.

Thx. Is Jones even a starter?

I think it's a bit of a stretch to do a then vs. now comparison on high school recruits. Lots of things have changed since 2005, most notably 1) the transfer portal allows UM to recruit other Big Sky and FCS schools, which has proven extremely effective so far this season, and 2) back then everyone in MT wanted to come to UM. We were killing MSU on enrollment, prestige, and value. That's no longer the case, and our coaches now have to fight against a perception among most MT HS kids that MSU is just the better school to be at. Losing legacy UM kids to MSU isn't just a problem for our football team, it's happening with all students.

I think it's a bit of a cop out to suggest that UM simply isn't trying, too. We've offered pretty much every kid MSU has in MT for the last several seasons, and they just aren't picking us.

But I also agree with guys like HHB. This is not a huge problem. We're doing extremely well in out of state recruiting, both HS kids and transfers.

Not at all. I see a lot of great things with this team and coaching staff. Great QB play, elite RB and above average WR play. Good to great tight end play. I wouldn't trade our linebackers for any. We have a veteran coaching staff that has proven they can win. Just because there’s plenty of great things about this team doesn’t mean we have to ignore its deficiencies. OL and DL play has been and continues to be a spot of weakness, recruiting in state talent is a spot of needed improvement. I have nice things to say about the team all the time, but if deep playoff runs and a title are what we aspire to have routinely here, then seeing clear eyed the weaknesses of the team isn’t a bad thing. I care, so I bitch when we’re not the best. I think we’ve got the best program in the state of Montana, so it grinds my gears when we don’t get the best in state talent, especially the talent in the trenches, where we’ve arguably been the weakest. It’s not my mission to hit the panic button.

I believe there were 8 all conference players on the Cats last year from Montana (including Rylan Ortt who's father played for UM) and one on the Griz, Junior Bergen. The statement that there is not top talent in this state is incorrect. If the Griz go after these top in state kids and lose the recruiting battle that is one thing but the argument was made that they are not even pursing many of the top in state football players. This is in direct contrast to Bobby 1.0 who got 80% of the top in state players.
See Elrod’s numbers. I don’t know. Thx.
