Too many mistakes early, good composure, adjustments, dominant D in 2d half, and a nice win

The Griz were hurt by a half dozen mistakes and some bad tackles in the first half, and perhaps beyond. Dropped balls, penalties, missed tackles, bad decisions on throws, etc.

The play-calling was a bit too fancy early in the game, in my view. Ah Yat shouldn't have thrown 4 long balls early in the first half. Receiver wasn't open, and sometimes double-covered. A couple times were 3d and short. Jeez, get the first down, and throw to the many open receivers. Ah Yat is very good and improving, but this was not his best game, especially earlier in the game. He ran well and is a better and tougher runner than I had realized. He hung in there and finished strong.

Great composure, never got rattled, jump kept playing and pouding, and took control. Terrific defense by the D in second half. The CP QB hit some covered receivers earlier in game and the receivers made some nice catches. But after the Griz starting cranking up pressure later in first half, and in second half, the QB got rushed and worried and fell apart. He was 15-33 with 4 picks. The other guy was 1-6 for 0 yards.

Great games by Gillman and Rocker. And, of course, Wortham. He had 10 catches. Gillman was 18-123 for 6.8. 2 TD's rushing. 5 receptions. Rocker had 3. Rocker was wide open at 10 yards on the long throw into double coverage that was to picked in the SE end zone.

The Griz D dominated the second half. CP had five 3 and outs (8, 5, 6, 3, 0, 0 yards), and then a 4-38. In 2d half, CP had TO of 60 yards. The UM LB's led tackling with 7, 5 and 5. Third down conversions were 11-19 Griz to 2-14. Great pick 6 by Lawler to start half and start shifting momentum.

First downs 27-11 for Griz. Plays were for Griz 85-57. Alot of plays. TO was 434 to 336, for Griz.

Ah Yat was 27-of-41 passing for 257 yards, 1 TD and 1 pick. He threw better at the game went on. He barely overthrew multiple receivers.

Griz beat the 16 point thread. Griz poster Elrod texted me at halftime to say Griz would adjust and win 28-9. What a lucky guess.

CP QB was 15-33 and 4 picks. The back up was 1-6 for 0 yards. CP was 16-39 passing. The longest pass was a goof up by our secondary when we didn't cover a wideout on CP sideline. D had to shift and wasn't ready.

This is a fun team. 6-0. They need to keep improving and reduce mistakes. I didn't realize the Griz D had dominated the 2d half like that. Injuries don't seem to be too bad. I'm hopeful and excited.

"The Griz were outgained 276 yards 146 in the first half but turned it around to force three second half turnovers and limited the Mustangs to just 60 total yards, two complete passes, and one first down in the second." That is domination.

"I told them in the locker room after the game, that's what good football teams do. They find different ways to win," said head coach Bobby Hauck.

"They win when they aren't playing their best. All three phases contribute and we lean on each other, so if one side's struggling, the other side will carry the load, and that's what good teams do. So, we have a good team."

"You'd be shocked at how calm, how academic, it was in the locker room at halftime. It was nothing. It was like, all right, here's the yardage goals. Here's what they got. Here's what we've got. Here's where we've got to fix things," said Hauck.

"We've got to make some plays. We've got to quit goofing things up and looking like we are not tuned in to what's going on. So, we got all that shored up, and it was great."

Ah Yat is very good and improving, but this was not his best game
I thought KAY played great.
The receivers and TE’s played terrible.
Lots of drops, missed blocks, wrong routes, substitution errors, terrible fumble, personal foul, missed punt return. #81 and #9 had their worst games yet.
Not much separation, and no break aways or spectacular catches. The best plays came when KAY made elite passes.
If not for #6, that group would look mediocre.
The WR/TE group could be the biggest weakness on O. Young. Inexperienced. Banged up. That group looked hungover today.

RBs had 8 catches for 93 yards. That’s over a third of the total passing yards and was a major adjustment in the second half. Nice work by the coaches.
No catches by a TE.
I seem to recall at least three drives which ended on a 3rd down drop. Maybe four, although one of those would have been a difficult catch, but still, go up and get the god damn ball. Make a play.
Also saw WRs run out of bounds twice and saw them not fight for extra yardage or the first down. Wtf was wrong with them today?

Ian Finch was a bright spot at receiver, made a few key blocks to spring runs for Gillman + Lit up that kick returner during the second half

All week I bitched and moaned about the 3-3-5 and the weakness of this defense, then they go and completely redeem themselves 😆. I’m still not a fan of the scheme, but I like that the coaches mixed in more zone yesterday. That was probably the best defensive performance we’ve had since 2023 and it came a week after they had arguably their worst performance since Weber state 2024. I like that both the coaching staff and team responded with such a dominant plan and execution. My hat is off to them. Echoing what hoops was saying, I think Ah Yat wanted the home run a bit too often in the first half, and he missed some wide open shorter gains that were there. What a great performance he put in during the second half though! Al in all, I’m real impressed by this team, especially their ability to shake off mistakes and slow starts, adjust, and dominate to finish games. Go Griz!!

Griz, we don’t agree on this. K had multiple throws too long when receivers were open. Even later in game. His decision to throw long into double coverage and get picked was terrible. And Rocker was wide open shorter and in line of vision on a slant. Open receivers including TE’s not seen. Too many long passes on 3d and short early in game. Most of the above stuff was not later in game. Receivers dropped too many, but not as many as you said. In fact, not even close. I like the TE and receiver group. What receiver injuries do we have now? K got better and stronger as game went on. I like K. He’s improving and more potential.

Hauck:
"And I didn't think our quarterback was as accurate in the first half.

"There were some harder catches, I thought that he settled in and saw things better in the second half."

KAY was definitely not seeing the field very well the 1st half. Maybe CP switched up their defensive scheme? The CP QB struggled despite supposedly being one of the better QBs in the league. I suspect they prepared him for a lot of pressure and when the Griz dropped into zone coverage, the game plan fell apart. I’m really glad the defense has diversified their looks. Makes it much harder to prepare for.

Not a huge dispute with most of this post but the bottom line is the WR group (except #6) played bad, particularly early, and did KAY no favors. Of course KAY needed time to settle in when the WRs had that many mistakes. And many of those mistakes did occur in the second half too including the terrible fumble, drops, and TE drop. Also the personal foul could have been a drive killer but thankfully KAY erased that disaster.
The passing to the RBs also increased in the 2d and KAY started moving the chains with his legs. I believe he got at least 3 first downs rushing. WRs weren’t getting it done. You can’t ask for KAY to do much more in that game; instead, we need the WRs to step up. Lots of drops. If they can touch it, they need to catch some.
The missed long passes were not entirely on KAY either. TE ran the wrong route on the pick. That’s still a bad pass but again TE did him no favors.
Those deep shots were by design, called by the OC on short yardage which I’m okay with. The one play in particular had max protection with a roll out, so there really was only one route to choose from and it was well covered. One sack was because a WR fell down.
Bohannon is not 100% still banged up, had limited plays. Gurnsey is banged up and Olson too. The Butte connection. And where is Hendrix?
For the most part, the WRs are good but new, young, inexperienced, or inconsistent.

Bobby had a comment during the post game press conference that they changed up the connections between fronts and coverage.

I like Ah Yat. He has shown real toughness. His game has shown a lot of maturity this year. The kid is smart and he is a winner. I’m very glad he is playing for us.

That said, the first half of this game was his worst of the year. It was like his off games from last year. He just was not In sync. Yes there were dropped balls. Nonetheless several of his throws were just simply off. Then his repeated decisions to throw a deep ball at double covered receivers was head scratching to say the least. He is gifted and can get away with that sometimes. Yet yesterday wasn’t one of those days. Grateful for his play in the second half, it was steady. Not worried about him, just my observation on this discussion. An off day for a good QB.

Finally thank goodness our defense showed up. They were solid the entire game. Yet that second half was phenomenal. Let’s see that every week. Go Griz!

We seem to still really be struggling on the right side of the offensive line. The problem seems to come down to guard and seems like the staff is well aware. They gave Freitas a run in there and he seemed to get pushed back quite a bit, even in the run game. Matan whiffed on quite a few blocks and on blocks in space. They passed off better in the passing game, but still gave up too much pressure. Since Bobby is confident in Klimczak and Botner at Center maybe he would be comfortable with sliding Botner to guard, but I doubt it as Center already seems like being out of place for him as he was a tackle most of his career.

I like what I saw from Amick in relief of Johnson given that it was at the end of the game in a runaway, but maybe we could bump Johnson back down to guard and give it a run. Regardless of the solution, if we want a deep run, it needs to improve.

Really wish we still had Journey for his senior year. Think we would be seeing a little more dominance in the run game if we did.

Yeah. Having grimsrud would sure have been nice.

"It was two (different) halves offensively for us," Montana head coach Bobby Hauck said. "The defense played exceptional throughout."

The Griz were finding success with chunk plays, too. Montana didn't need elongated drives to slowly inch its way down the field. The Griz tallied 12 plays of 15 or more yards against Indiana State. UM recorded nine of those against Idaho and 11 against Idaho State, averaging over 10 per game.

In the first half against Cal Poly, Montana recorded zero.

Hauck credited the Mustangs, specifically defensive coordinator Cody vonAppen, for a scheme to shut Montana down. [Good to see he's doing well. He had gotten in trouble in 2009 when he played at UM. He was one of 3 Griz who got involved with a fight, or beating up someone (and the guy was not the guy they were supposed to go after]

"There were some execution issues by us, as well, but all of that goes back to them," Hauck added. "They had a good plan, they did a nice job, and they shut us out for a long time in that game."

Montana quarterback Keali'i Ah Yat's longest pass of the first half went 11 yards.

Montana's 9-0 deficit at halftime marked the first time the team had been shut out in the first half since the matchup with Portland State in 2024.

"We were just wearing and tearing them down." Gillman added. "The second half was just us keeping our foot on the pedal, and that's what happens. Things start to open up."

This was not a good game for Ah Yat. He missed a number of open receivers and routes. The first play after the 2 minute timeout in the first half he hit Wortham for a 12+ yard gain and first down, although he missed a wide open Gale in the seam which would have likely gone for 40+ yards, if not a TD. One of the next plays in the series, he was almost picked off for the second time even though he had an open WR on the backside running a 12 yd dig or hitch route. He had done a great job side-stepping pressure up the middle but needed to progress through his receivers to find the open one.

Although his option runs were beauties. He made great decisions on each one and ran with guile, when needed, and power, when needed.

Agree. Colin Amick coming in after Everett got hurt seemed like an upgrade with better execution.

Yep. I was screaming at my iPad on that INT. Rocker WIDE OPEN across the middle and he’d made the decision to throw into double coverage before the ball was even snapped apparently. And 3rd and 2 and we take a 25 yard shot? Make it make sense, Pease…

I think he’s our next stud but hard to tell from what I saw. Gilman and rocker have made the line look better than they are at times by making something out of nothing. At times there are good holes and seems opened up for them.

Early in the game, going North, there was a wide open receiver (maybe 6) going deep on sideline by CP fan section, and the throw went to a shorter guy in that line of direction or over the middle. I think it was completed. The outside receiver and done and out and go, and the defender bit on the out. Missed opportunity for TD. Again, I like, in fact really like, Ah Yat.

It helps when you have great blocks by Ian Finch and Brian Gale/Evan Shafer
