I watched the SHU (they call themselves shoe or the Pios) vs Howard game this morning. They were touting that Howard's defense is top ten in scoring and points allowed, they really didn't impress me. The running back, Mitchell Summers #20 RB 109 carries for 638 yards and 5 TD’s, 7 receptions for 112 yards, against Howard 18 carries for 243 yards and 2 TD’s. He’s quick and can be dangerous when he gets to the outside and his first score came from the first play from scrimmage in the second half after a false start backed the ball up to the SHU 20. He's not that much of an issue, if he played in the Big Sky, I really don't think he would have half the yardage he has, the only team of significance they have played is Lehigh when they lost 28-10.
Jack Snyder #14 QB, 92/132 for 1,042 yards, 5 TD, 2 Int, 75 carries for 345 yards and 4 TD, against Howard 11/18 for 147 yards, 1 TD, 13 caries for 68 yards. Had designed run of 11and 44 yards so he can move a little as much of the day he was scrambling and taking off with receivers covered. Doesn’t have much for arm strength, two of his 11 completions were jet sweeps and he had a 20 yard completion plus his TD pass went about 20 yards, 5 yards into the end zone.
I question their ability to run their offense in the red zone. They accepted an off sides penalty on a 4 and 1 FG attempt from 22 yards and gained 1 yard on three rushing attempts, none by Summers, and one by the backup QB for no gain, who also had a no gain on the third and one that set up the attempt that resulted in the off sides. On Howard’s next possession, they had a 4 and out where they went for a 4th and 1 on their own 34 for no gain. Took 6 plays to move the ball 25 yards to the Howard 9, then gained just 1 yard on three plays before kicking a 25 yard FG.
#17 Payton Rhoades WR was the leading receiver with 4 catches totaling 71 yards and the TD a long of 25 (13 YAC)
Matt Kling #3 K, 3 FG’s of 49, 19 and 25 yards.
