Why is the Griz Defense so susceptible to inside slants and drags?

I think ISU will struggle in Bozeman. Cat front four will get pressure and I would bet they play more zone coverage. Bengal running back will have to have a huge day to keep them in the game.
Cooke is a lot like Favre in that he takes way to many risks with off balance deep balls.

Against a team like Idaho State, who literally NEVER plays a tight end and instead plays four wide receivers, the Griz have to get home in the box and knock the QB off the spot or its going to be a mismatch with open receivers all day long.

Montana plays six men in the box. They bring between 4-6 on every single play, especially when Idaho State was throwing. That means if the Griz bring five, Idaho State is playing 7-on-6. If the Griz bring six, Idaho State is playing 7-on-5.

You can mitigate it by hitting Cooke or covering in the slot.

No coincidence that Montana's defense buckled down when Peyton Wing, their best cover linebacker, got back in the game and the defense started playing Micah Harper man-to-man against one of the slots. That forced Cooke to need an extra half-second and the rush was able to knock him off the spot. Once he wasn't in a complete rhythm, the Griz were able to take the upper hand.
I made a stupid observation about ISU having TE's and they don't. I thought the two behemoths they were throwing the ball to were TE's. My bad... feel free to excoriate my less than stellar knowledge of Idaho State. I know exactly nothing about that team and never have other than Jared Allen Played for them. I don't even know where Idaho State is located, Idaho Falls? Pocatello? It has to be one of them. I know it's not Boise or Moscow. Those are the only two Idaho teams I have ever paid attention to. So please forgive my ignorance.

And gave up 421 yards passing, 28 first downs and 38 points to a 2-4 team.
Against FBS UNLV they put up 395 passing yards, and had 30 first downs.

If you listen to Hawkins' press conference before the game, their QB has had some mental obstacles this year, but has dialed it in. Their offense is this dangerous, and they will keep giving every team fits when they show up in Pocatello.

After the long drive by ISU at start of second half, ISU had drives of 3-3, 3-0, 4-16, 3-33 (TD after pick), 8-41, 6-20, 9-55. Total of 168 yards in that span. Scored 7 points in that span. At the start of that span, ISU was 1-6 passing.

They were still driving at the end of the game, gave themselves a chance to win and stopped themselves.

Nope, Griz stopped them. Goal line stand. ISU QB threw 4 incompletions in a row. Griz had ball at end of game.

Will Idaho State have a “Griz hangover” or does their game travel… will be curious to see how that offense does outside at msu-Bozeman

I’m sure their passing attack won’t be as effective against msu. It’s forecast to be comparatively cold (40’ - 50’s), windy, and possibly raining. That will be a change for the QB and receivers versus their temperature controlled done. Plus the cat front four is the strongest part of their defense. Suspect that will allow them to drop everyone else into coverage.

Cats also mix coverages a ton and Cooke has proven to struggle bit time against non-man teams. He only 12 of 33 passes for 209 yards against Northern Colorado because they mixed coverages so much. UNLV switched into zone and he threw two picks that cost them the game.

I think the cats handle them easily. The best part about the cats defense is their line. They’ll be able to hit Cooke early and make him uncomfortable.

Talent and coaching.

You don't have the DBs or LBs to cover anything more than 3 offensive players on any given play.

The same way your coaching staff can't find a serviceable QB they just don't recruit the talent you used to get.

It's obvious on the field
