Why is the Griz Defense so susceptible to inside slants and drags?

I was wondering if anyone knew why our defense is so suspectable to the inside slant and drags. It was evident again, against ISU, and has been problematic since game #1. I really noticed it against UND and some with Idaho. It it a scheme thing or a personnel thing? It seems to keep happening in between the LB/Safety/Corner

An amazing sentence.

Like the question.

Against a team like Idaho State, who literally NEVER plays a tight end and instead plays four wide receivers, the Griz have to get home in the box and knock the QB off the spot or its going to be a mismatch with open receivers all day long.

Montana plays six men in the box. They bring between 4-6 on every single play, especially when Idaho State was throwing. That means if the Griz bring five, Idaho State is playing 7-on-6. If the Griz bring six, Idaho State is playing 7-on-5.

You can mitigate it by hitting Cooke or covering in the slot.

No coincidence that Montana's defense buckled down when Peyton Wing, their best cover linebacker, got back in the game and the defense started playing Micah Harper man-to-man against one of the slots. That forced Cooke to need an extra half-second and the rush was able to knock him off the spot. Once he wasn't in a complete rhythm, the Griz were able to take the upper hand.

Thank you

Like most pass-only offenses that can't run the ball, they eventually stop themselves, which is what happened Saturday.

Will Idaho State have a “Griz hangover” or does their game travel… will be curious to see how that offense does outside at msu-Bozeman

Cooke is going to have a rough day. He plays great with pocket aces but sure seemed to struggle with king jack.

Maybe because the Griz defense is susceptible to all passing plays....

To add to Colter's answer, their offense with quick slants and drags was dropping their WR's right into the spots vacated by our blitzing linebackers. Honestly, it was really good offense on their part. A lot of us were concerned about ISU before the season started for exactly this reason. As long as their offense stays the same and our defense stays the same, they will be dangerous for us.
