Post Game - Snatching victory from the jaws of defeat

UND had more total yards, way out-rushed Montana, shut down Eli Gillman, won the turnover battle, had better TOP, and was better on 3rd down. They should have won this game. There's a few things I can point to but clearly UND not taking the option to try for points on two possessions when on the Montana 15 and Montana 15 has to haunt them. Hit one of those and the Griz have to try for 2 late to tie it up, hit both - and the end of this game doesn't matter. It was wild that I thought for a while the Griz were being out played and out coached... to see that two bad decisions by UND would come back to haunt them.

The Grizzlies probably should've lost this game, but having a team still finding it's way figure out how to win a game shows some great signs of growth.

I see two growing worries:

1. This O-line didn't play well in the face of a fairly good team, especially the right side. Ah Yat was under pressure and sacked A LOT, plus Gillman had little room to run in an offense that is built around him. Could some shuffling be needed on the OL or did UND just have a great day? We'll see.

2. Corners not named Kyon Loud had a tough day. Explains itself, the defense put these corners on an island and it lead to some good and some really bad results.

-----------

Here's my big takeaway though, I told the guys on the GFP - can Ah Yat win a game when the Griz can't run and Wortham is neutralized? Today, he showed us that yes he can. It wasn't good for quite a while but his 4th quarter was awesome and Brooks Davis showed Griz Nation a good example of how great of a fall camp he had. Davis is a kid that this offense needs to help balance the passing game and man oh man, did he have a day.

I'm not really mad at the defense at all today, the offense left them out to dry for a long time tonight. Fooled a few times on deep shots but otherwise fought their asses off. Some of the expected usual guys starting to really show up, Tolbert, Harper, Wing, Wilkinson, Rausch, Loud. Wing's late pick helped spark something and get the Griz going which was clutch.

A few other thoughts:

- Money Morrison had a clutch kick and thank goodness he did there

- Rausch had a decent day but slipped at least once giving up a deep shot, let's find better cleats maybe?

- Far too many penalties on special teams, for a coaching staff that prides themselves on solid ST play they have a ways to go here.

- 2 weeks with teams putting up 200+ on the ground, that's not a good sign

- 5 of 18 on 3rd down for Montana is super bad, glad it didn't cost them the game, much to improve on here

- Not sure the use of Wortham at QB in mid-field that usually put Montana behind the sticks

- A few thousand fans didn't come back at half and those who did showed we didn't need them. It took some time but the last few UND possessions the fans were LOUD - loved hearing it / seeing it. Bummed a chunk of fans focused on the ride home or socializing when the team needed them.

- Even though they opted not to kick 2 shorter field goals UND also missed a PAT and that was the difference, incredible how close of a margin this win was.

- I'm sure the 1995 guys were biting their nails like all of us, glad the Griz could steal a W in front of guys like Dave Dickenson this year where they couldn't last year.

- The Griz defense forced the UND QB to 42.5% completion and outside of a single 82 yard shot he would've had 176. Obviously he got that deep pass and it really helps his numbers but they're close to showing some real good stuff. Need to improve that over the top coverage especially if these corners and a few safeties are going to be on an island.

- I'm so glad we have Brooks Davis

Not sure how they pulled it off but they did. This team has a ways to go, lets hope some things can be cleaned up fast! 2-0! Keep at it!
Great write up. As we chatted, this is *part* of what we needed to see out of KAY. The other part im hoping shows up soon is the ability to convert 3rd downs and stay on the filed more consistently, as you pointed out the 3rd downs efficiency. But overall, very impressive play when it mattered most.

As discussed in fall camp, my hope is the right side of the oline sees some rotation soon. Give me colin amick at right tackle for some meaningful reps this next week. Young dude, plays physical, moves well, slightly bigger than EV. I do think that was a pretty solid front we saw, but also believe there is better we'll face, perhaps even that tram across the divide. Gotta keep improving here, and I think they will.

RPO game... need to pull it more and hit quick passes. Downside of RPO in my opinion is its fairly easy to disguise having fewer defenders in the box then crash safeties. There were several plays in front of us where they could've pulled and hit quick plants. Need to back them off of. Part of the low rushing attack is due to this.

Brooks Davis may go down as one of our best ever. Big call to make this early i get it, but man. He's so legit. Only a freshman, hasn't really even played that much football (well documented he didnt even start playing football until sophomore/junior year of highschool. Sky is truly the limit for this young man.

What a great win, and shows a TON about the character of this team. We will be a much better team in oct / nov, so getting this type of win now is ... huge!
GO GRIZ

279 yards surrendered by the D in the first half.
143 yards in the 2nd half.

The only real part that concerns me is the ZERO sacks. I realize there were some pressures (including Boyd’s near sack that resulted in Wing’s INT) but all in all the D line’s inability to get pressure appears to be requiring Bobby to leave the CB’s on an island and send the house. That IMHO is not a recipe for continued success….

And conversely, offensively the O-line is in shambles. SIX sacks given up? Only 62 yards rushing? Are they really THAT bad?
Atrocious. Ah Yat was under duress every time he dropped back, and the running-backs had zero running lanes.

I'm not sure it was "atrocious". Ah Yat still threw for 300. Its wasn't great, but thats a good front we faced. Wasn't up to standard for sure. I blame the RPO. I dont like it whatsoever. Too easy for defenses to keep guys out of the box then crash. OR... we need KAY to keep it and hit quick passes more. Back them off of pinning their ears back and crashing on the run.

Id like to see more rotation here. Klimzcak and botner are rotating / sharing time. Lets see some of that at other spots. They almost OVER rotate on the defensive side.

They need to stick with Klimczak at center and move Botner over to the right side for extra reinforcements. I’m hopeful the OL will figure it out, especially since they likely won’t see a front that good until the cats. A lot of time for them to gel and figure it out.
Also should be pointed out, part of line protections is getting in the right protection. This falls on coaches, but also the qb checks protections, and center is the leader out there. Perhaps another area the coaches will keep coaching KAY up in, and should evolve with a new o line coach.

Our long snapper, holder and kicker won this game...theirs didn't.

I don't know if we need rotation or just some flat-out replacements on the O line, and I said this elsewhere so sorry for beating a dead horse, but those 6 sacks arexa five-alarm fire that need to addressed by Coach Norcross this week !!! We have 10 straight games ahead of us, and we won't keep Keali'i upright giving up 6 sacks a game !!!

And we have the opposite problem on our D--two games in and we have 1 sack and that one came against a Div. II opponent. We need to start putting the opposing QB on the ground , and we may need to look at more rotation or replacement at DE. At least some of the sacks we need have to come from that position, aka Hayden Harris-we just can't count on blitzes for QB pressure and sacks !!!

“Down nine points with just over four minutes left to play, UM kicker Ty Morrison slotted a 42-yard field goal to cut the Fighting Hawks’ lead to 17-23.

The defense followed it up with a three-and-out stand, and with 2:40 left on the clock Ah Yat went to work. With defenders in his face, he calmly completed passes to Stevie Rocker Jr., Blake Bohannon, and crucial third and 19 conversion to tight end Josh Gale that put the Griz in scoring position.

On the next play, Ah Yat hit Davis streaking to the endzone on a corner fade from 28-yards out to tie the game 23-all, and Morrison would seal the win on the PAT to move the Griz to 2-0 on the season.”

And there in lies the problem / issue. O-Line coach. Well I don't want to say I told you so, but I did ! So suck it up buttercup. The current O-Line coach said "I don't like to rotate the O-Line players". Go find it yourself if you do not believe what I say. Will our head coach ever learn ? It's been pretty clear for years.

All true, but if Loud doesn’t get flagged for unsportsmanlike they hold there and there’s no last TD by UND…this “what if” goes both ways…
That unsportsmanlike happened right infront of us and I didn’t get it. The guy was kinda hanging onto Loud as he was trying to get up so he kinda demonstrably stood up. It felt like he was baited and the ref fell for it.
