Cam Miller - Tommy Mellot PreSeason Play

I chuckled when so many posters -- bubs and GRIZ alike -- absolutely hammered me when I said that him making the 53 man would be an uphill battle, seemingly just because he's from Montana, I guess?

Well, it's going to be an uphill battle. Certainly not out of the question, and I would like to see it, but it sure as hell ain't the given so many thought it would be
I predict that he ends up on the practice squad. He has so much to learn with the receiver position, especially playing at the NFL level. I think the Raiders knew when they drafted him, it may take some time but he has the skills to become a good one. Nobody works harder than Tommy and he is smart.

I'll tell you he proved me wrong. I saw him in person when they played down here against Sam Houston in a playoff game in 2021 and I was thinking, no way this dude can throw the ball, and all Sam needs to do is stack the box and shut down the run. He ran for two and threw for two more. He didn't throw much, but he had a lot of yards on maybe half dozen completions.
I won't say he can't make the team at some point because I left there thinking of a guy I grew up with a couple years younger than me a lot of y'all have heard of. Scott Zanon played basketball (member of the 1,000 point club), a year of football (scored two TD's one on a punt return), and in case you forgot, he won the Big Sky decathlon back in the day.

Mellot is like a fish out of water when it comes to playing at this level in his current position. If he is assigned the practice squad which appears where he is going there is a chance another team would claim him as he would be a free agent. I don't wish him any ill will and hope he can be successful but I am just not sure the pros are a fit for him at the position he is currently playing.

I don’t portend to know the Raider’s roster particulars, but it basically comes down to numbers. It’s very difficult to keep purely developmental players on an NFL practice squad as they are limited to 16 players (17 counting the international player). And those 16 need to be field-ready in the event of injury since the 53 player limit severely cuts into depth. Tommy will have to prove he can be at least a serviceable NFL WR to stay.

He’s a freak athlete, but when you get to the NFL they are a dime a dozen. To beat out guys that are just as athletic as him and have been playing the position for years it is an uphill battle. He looked a little bit out of his depth in their first game, but there’s still a few weeks for him to step up. He’s no longer the best guy on the field so his strong work ethic has to be what sets him apart.

Cam looked the part, but does that translate to playing against first string defenses?

We will see what Junior can do with his opportunity as the rash of injuries created a good opportunity to get some time against good talent.

I don't think athletes like Mellott are a dime a dozen in NFL. Had he run his 40 at the NFL Combine, it would have been the fastest QB time ever at the Combine. That's not dime a dozen.

And how does that compare to receivers? How about receivers that are 6 inches taller? He’s not the most talented player in his position group on his own team now. He is a hell of an athlete, but be real about what talent there is in the NFL.

He is not the most talented yet but has the skills to develop into a great talent. Look at Edelman.

Whoa whoa whoa. Careful there, Wolf. When I pointed out that 4.4 guys in the nfl are ubiquitous, it was if I'd said Mother Theresa was in a drug cartel.

Great post.

But...but... he's not an nfl QB. And yes, 4.4 WRs are truly everywhere (if you don't believe me, take a Quick Look at how many sub 4.4 WRs the Chiefs have in camp. And most won't even make the practice squad).

Great point. Look, I've seen enough of his speed and twitchiness to know he's a hell of an athlete.

But the nfl literally is fullllllll of incredible athletes. And next year, here comes another 135 incredible athletes. It's just so damn tough to even make a roster
What separates them is work ethic and smarts. Tommy is a relentless worker and is smart. He has a chance and I am sure he will make the most of it.

I don’t believe you. How many in Chiefs camp? I assume you don’t know. 8 receivers ran faster at Combine than 4.39. 2 at 4.38 and 2 4.37. Sure, dime a dozen. 16 players at combine ran faster than 4.39. 8 of the 4.35 and above. Sure, dime a dozen.

Can wait to see your list of Chiefs receivers who run faster than 4.39.

It's going to take Mellott some time to develop as a WR.

As for Cam Miller, apparently Tom Brady is very high on Miller. That'll keep on the roster, in my opinion.
