Cam Miller - Tommy Mellot PreSeason Play

Interesting takes on watching the preseason game Raiders/Seahawks from my and others perspectives. Cam Miller looks very good, seemed to be able handle the NFL and played well. One commentator suggested in his opinion he was the player of the game.
Tommy Mellot did just the opposite. He seemed confused and unsure of what to do. He did take a couple good hits which I am sure he will feel today. Just a reminder from players that he is in the big leagues now and not some JV football team.
I enjoyed watching the game. It was much more interesting than regular season play.

Patrick O'Connell had a pretty good game too. He started and played most of the first half. He had a nice PBU that stalled a drive for the Raiders.

I agree Cam Miller played really well. He threw a deep bomb TD and if it weren't for the kicker missing last night, he would've led the game winning drive for the Raiders. Tommy struggled I thought. His biggest mistake was not fielding that punt that sailed over his head last night and then tried to chase it down and almost touched it when it was in the end zone. That would've been disastrous for the Raiders. He definitely could've caught that punt and at a minimum called for a fair catch.

Bergen and the Niners play the Broncos tomorrow at 6:30 on NFL Network. Big game for him to prove himself.

Yes I forgot to mention Patrick O'Connell. He did play well and kudos to him along with a nice $1 million dollar paycheck for this season.

I caught that too on NFL network, very nice in coverage. I was happy for my fellow Flatheader!

I don't know though, I was a little worried he might not make it because I recently heard somewhere that he has to have reached his athletic peak.
Just heard that, I don't know, somewhere.

I like to see all FCS payers do good in the NFL, especially the Montana guys, Cat or Griz. I thought Patrick O'Connell played very good. Also, ex-Bobcat Ty Okada at safety. I thought Cam Miller looked very good for his first time.

Tommy didn't get in on that many plays. Yes, he seemed confused on the punt but they had two people back to return it when it is usually one. He seemed unsure if the other player was going to take it. On the one time they threw him a pass, the defense had that play diagnosed and they were right on him when he made the catch. It is difficult enough to make an NFL team never mind coming in learning a new position. He has a steep learning curve. I believe they will be patient with him and give him time to develop a lot like Edelman. I don't know if you can say he is making the jump from some JV team. They were a top FCS team and he was the Payton award winner as the top player in the FCS. He has the skills.

I hope Junior does well. He has a great opportunity with SF. Will be watching.

I hate that reference when I see it to the "JV" as well. This year as I glance at the preseason rankings, I think the top 15 could be competitive in a couple of the G6 conferences, particularly the MAC and the Sun Belt. Not saying any would win it, just that they would have a shot in most cases of being bowl eligible and winning that game.
If the reference goes toward the P4 teams, there are a lot of misconceptions that the SEC, for example, is like playing in the NFL. Not all of the guys on those rosters make the NFL, that's why these big sky NFL players should be a source of pride. I'd even add in the few kids from Montana, like Will Disley, who get to play at these bigger schools and move on to the league.
I wish all of them well as they seek to make their dream to play at the next level happen.

Looking at the depth chart for the Niners. If all these guys who are questionable don't play tomorrow, then Bergen has a chance to play a lot, and make a big impression.
At some point, doesn't the Shanahan regime have to get held accountable for the rash of injuries the Niners seem to have every single year? I don't know what they're doing there at Levi, but it ain't workin.

Believe me as a Niners fan myself, it’s extremely frustrating. It’s good for Bergen but I’m getting tired of this shit.

It is a huge transition changing positions for Tommy. Dylan Laube played well and that might hurt his chance to make 53 man roster. I am sure if he doesn't he will end up on Raiders or some other teams practice team. Might be his best route right now. He is such a solid young man I really can't imagine anyone from Montana not cheering for him.

I believe that only like 30-35% of 6th or 7th round picks make the 53 man roster initially. Many end up on practice squads.
I did not realize it was that low. I always assumed draft pics carried more priority but that must have been just an assumption. I seen in ‘23 11% of the starters in the NFL were undrafted.

Wonder how often draft pics get cut.
With late round picks it’s pretty common. What isn’t common is a drafted rookie not making a practice squad. But it really just depends on how much “capital” they’ve spent on you. Day 1 & 2 picks have a long leash. The only day 3 picks that are super safe as a rookie are those drafted in the 4th round. After that it’s a crapshoot.

Good post. Old is clueless.

I chuckled when so many posters -- bubs and GRIZ alike -- absolutely hammered me when I said that him making the 53 man would be an uphill battle, seemingly just because he's from Montana, I guess?

Well, it's going to be an uphill battle. Certainly not out of the question, and I would like to see it, but it sure as hell ain't the given so many thought it would be
