I think we're speaking the same language, except I perhaps have more cynicism and disdain for the NCAA than you. If this was the free market, my opinion is the NCAA would have gone extinct along with blockbuster movie stores and MySpace social media. When they came down heavy handed on UM for redshirts getting hotdogs and chips at the tailgates, in the same era Johnny manziel was getting away with literally whatever he wanted, they were no longer a serious or capable organization. Thus, even though against my natural instincts and beliefs, perhaps a commission lead by the POTUS could be helpful.
With Lou Saban heading the NIL commission, we know that some sort of "salary cap" mechanism will be on the table. Sounds okay and perhaps workable. But that also runs the risk of a bizarre return to the old day. Sure, schools will adhere to a top limit above the table ... but how much $$$ will now move under the table?
If it's an equal playing field for consequences if caught, then so be it. The ol saying "pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered" comes to mind...
So - the punishment handed down by the NCAA on UM was self-imposed. #thanksRoyce UM didn't even counter the punishment or anything. UM was like "hey, we did this what do you suggest? And the NCAA was all "sure??" here you go" and UM went COOL! thanks!"
