Death of the WAC, Opportunity for Summit to Sponsor Football

It is hard to support views that we like being in the big sky. We want to play team no one has ever heard of and to make it better let's invite them to the conference. It pains me that people are OK that we will almost never play peer school such as Colorado st, Utah st, Nevada, let alone we will never get any I mean any fbs mid major school to ever play us wa-griz.

You say that if teams want to get serious about football they need invest in there school. What a joke. If teams are going to invest the money we spend they are look for FBS not the big sky. The big sky might be a stepping stone but they will not want to stay. Fu----. Sac st and cal davis is moving up most likely and haven't invested as much as montana to be int big sky.

Dude look at the other fcs school stadiums and basketball arenas. Most are a joke. Most high schools have better facilities. The big sky is a slow death for montana. Sadly many if you want to program to fail. Yes I said fail in the long term. Eventually our conference will be even worse then it is now. I can't stand seeing no. Colorado, suu, central wash, idaho st, eastern wa. Portland st and the list goes on and on. We are the 7th year senior beating up and school half our budget and facilities.
Fu___ We don't make any money in the playoffs. Almost fucking zero and we are happy because we get compete against teams that shouldn't hold a candle to us except a very very few. The only reason those do is they put money and want more. Fcs sucks balls as far football quality.

Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.

You make it sound like we have been winning championship after championship at the FCS level. We've been to one national championship in the last decade plus. If we were running through the FCS, I'd agree with you, but that has really never been the case. Even in the glory years, we weren't as dominant as some like to tell themselves. You can say the Big Sky is awful and bringing us down, but we have also only won that one time in recent memory.

We are in a place that is a pretty good fit for us right now. If the realignment happens where the G5 teams break away, that would be a different conversation. We are healthy and competitive at the top tier of the FCS right now. We would not be that if we moved up, in my opinion.

Oh, for God's sake. The GRIZ lost in football to Weber, MSU and NAU and struggle in the playoffs (except for Delaware and Furman last year) and in basketball No Colorado is a power this season. I am OK with staying in the Big Sky no matter what other schools do. It would be fun to see some different programs join our program. Do not be dupped into thinking we are invincible. We should welcome the opportunity to compete for a real national title no matter what level of talent we meet.

OK yes we haven't win the natty in 24 or so years. I give you that. Here is some questions to answer ok.

Outside ndsu. Who has been to the national championship game the most?
Who has the most playoff wins?
What team has better facilities then the griz?
Who has the most big sky championships?
Who has the arguably the biggest home field advantage?
Who went to like 7 natty games in 15 years?
The answer is the griz.

Yes we haven't win the natty lately but we are in the playoffs every year besides 1 in 30 years. People. You act like we are not a successful program struggling. We are not, I bet every other team besides the dakotas or your sister would trade us places in a second.
Teams tend to play to there competition level. We were the golden team in 90s and 2000s. Besides app st or James Madison who are in the fbs.

UM should look at moving its location to a state or city with much more population. As I saw in a column today, Trump doesn't think outside the box; he thinks without a box.

Sounds like a good argument that we are at the perfect level for us. We are able to compete for national championships, but are certainly not blowing away the competition. I tried to stay open minded about moving up over the last couple of years, but I just don't see a benefit other than people saying it would be exciting the play against bigger name teams. Everything you said in the post I just quoted makes me feel like we are in the perfect spot.

Not just bigger name teams, but more talented players to watch. It would benefit our enrollment as well.

Confirms your status quo posture.

Oh, 100%. I'll wear that badge. I gave it another shot at being open minded over the last year or so, but yea, I'm good with staying in the FCS until/unless the biggest conferences split away from the FBS. If we can't win the Big Sky consistently and make the national championship more than once very 15 years, we haven't outgrown where we are at.

I'm not sure I agree about our attendance. Is it really better to be in the bottom half of the Mountain West than it is for us to be at or near the top of the FCS? There really isn't a way to know, but our attendance is on the upswing currently, so I'd say that's a point in favor of what we are already doing.

I'm not sure what the argument is for wanting to watch the Griz play against more talented players, at least not until we outclass the current talent level we face.

Sounds like you have accepted UM being a member of the Big Sky conference with an affiliation with leading schools like Eastern Washington, Northern Colorado and Portland State. The last I checked, our school is the University of Montana, not Miles Junior College, Rocky Mountain College or Northern Montana. UM should be affiliated with Utah State, Wyoming, Colorado State which would reflect our traditional peers.

Our attendance is better then 90% of the new mwc. I do believe unlv and air force was the only ones that out performed wa-griz. Do you think our player relish playing in front 5k in big sky. Remember boise, sdsu, Utah st, and others are going to the pac. We are still on par with those teams or just below. I think boise averaged like 32k.
You say we have to be the biggest and baddest fcs team to move up and be successful. I can list you team that have moves up and are successful in the last 15 years and guess what one or 2 have won fcs before in the last 20 years. What drives the program to be successful is the infrastructure and fan base. We have all that. Use to be the argument was we don't have the infrastructure, or the fbs doesn't have a playoff, or the money.
Well the griz is one of the lowest state funded team, but we still have the infrastructure because of the fans and donations. With our measly 200k tv rights. 7 mil in tv rights would get us on the right track. Not saying will dominate but we will be competitive. Just like we were in the late 80s.

Yes, I have accepted that we are at a level where we are able to consistently compete at the top of our FCS division. I do not believe we could achieve the same at the FBS level. We are currently affiliated with the state universities of our neighboring states in Idaho and the Dakotas, and I honestly don't care at all that we are not affiliated with Colorado State. That just doesn't matter to me at all, personally, nearly as much as having the opportunity to go after a national championship at a level of football that challenges us competitively.

No offense, but last I checked Miles Junior College, Rocky, and Northern Montana are not in the Big Sky, so that is kind of a point without any real meaning.

But, hey, everybody is welcome to their opinion, and you are certainly welcome to yours.

They could soon be in the Big Sky along with Dixie State or whatever they are now called. I’m sure you will continue to be happy with the Big Sky. The administration will continue to force feed the fans with sub par competition for you to watch and dream about a national championship.

If the competition was subpar, we would be going undefeated. The competition is at a good level for us, clearly, or we would be destroying it. Objectively, it isn't subpar.

This is what radio, TV , and group of 4 are saying what is going to happen.
2032 when the TV contracts are up for sec and big10. They are going to a super league. They want to be the like the nfl. Private money and go outside ncaa regulations. So they can make billions. The group of 5 will not be part of this except a select few. Big 12 and acc will be over. The teams not invited to super league will have to save their conference by adding more teams or have enough teams to stay. Then they will have there own playoffs. The fcs school will mood likely become the old division 2 but be named fcs.
I myself rather bite the bullet and be ready and competitive in group of 5 when that time comes.
If we stay we will have either jump up at that time and be 6 years behind or stay fcs aka division 2.
I am not bandwagon fan that has to see the griz dominate. I have been a fan since the 80s. When they were a below average fcs team. I have seen the team grow and become what it is today. A damn fine program. I have confidence that will be successful at fbs. It might be growing pains. But the 80s were growing pains. If we had some of your opinions back then we still be an average fcs team. It take leadership and risk to become better and more relevant

There is zero evidence that UM is not frantically and purposely preparing for the situation you described above, flowtown. If there is a chance to become part of the Group of 5, especially if a lot of the other top peer FCS schools like NDSU/SDSU/etc. all plan to be in it, they will do whatever they can to make that happen.

They do not need to move up to FBS RIGHT NOW to make that happen, though. There currently are essentially insurmountable hurdles to doing so for us that likely will not be present if such a huge change occurs.

I’m not referring to North Dakota State. Take a look at the teams we have been playing, then tell me they aren’t subpar.
