Death of the WAC, Opportunity for Summit to Sponsor Football

I’m not referring to North Dakota State. Take a look at the teams we have been playing, then tell me they aren’t subpar.
I'm not talking about NDSU either. I'm talking about the Grizzlies. We aren't going undefeated. We have been to the Natty once in the last 15 years. We are back in the top tier of FCS teams, but we are not head and shoulders about the rest.

If the competition is subpar, why are we not completely dominating it year in and year out and winning championships?

No disrespect, you seem like a fine person and all, but I'd rather be at a level where we are competing for a championship rather than posting losing records in the Mountain West. If we get to the point where we are truly dominating the FCS and regularly winning championships, I might agree with you.

They could soon be in the Big Sky along with Dixie State or whatever they are now called. I’m sure you will continue to be happy with the Big Sky. The administration will continue to force feed the fans with sub par competition for you to watch and dream about a national championship.
Why are you getting pre mad about something that isn't happening? Do you know how much it will cost to field a competitive team in the FBS? It will double what our budget currently is and if we can't generate that type of money we are most certainly headed straight to the bottom of the FBS, and what will that do to fan attendance?

I’m not mad, only disappointed at the negative thinking of our administration and fans.

I would include the Board of Regents, legislature and governor in the group of negative thinkers. Allowing our two universities to belong to an inferior athletic conference since 1963 is unacceptable and hard to even believe.

If it is inferior, why don't we win it every year?

Why do you think we be a bottom feeder in mwc? Look at the teams that moved up in the last 15 years. Most of them are not bottom feeders. App st. James Madison, Texas st, Georgia st Georgia southern, sam Houston, i pretty confident that we are about par with those programs before moving up. None of those teams were winning the championship every year. So please stop saying we have to win the natty every year.
Right now the fcs is north dakota and who can compete against them. Which is only a hand full of teams. Who is going to be favored to win this year. North dakota, South dakota sdsu, montana st and montana. There might be a team from the east that may take a run but as of now. That is fcs. If we played ndsu, sdsu, SD, and montana every year plus a few other teams. I think at least the regular seasons would more entertaining. But that isn't going to happen. Then fcs would be one conference championship as of now it is pretty much big sky and missouri valley. Only other teams that have won the championship in last 15. Yes 15 years are fbs now.

I don't think we would be a Mountain West punching bag, even if we moved up right now, I think we could compete rather favorably with those teams, especially if we had access to 85 scholarships (and could afford it). There are, like I said, just too many prohibiting factors right now to see how it would work.

I will say, if/when the big schism happens, UM should do everything in its power to hitch itself (and MSU) to the Dakota schools. Those 6 schools would be the basis of a very formidable G5 (or whatever it ends up being called) conference in both Football and Basketball.

One reason is we are recruiting athletes that have the same talent level as the other Big Sky schools. More talented players reject FCS schools. Yes, I know——exceptions exist.
So, the competition is not inferior to us now, but is inferior to the level of athletes you believe imagine we would get if we moved up?

We might as well join the SEC, then.

You aren’t aware that rarely we get a FBS level recruit? Don’t you realize that they don’t want to play in a FCS conference?

All these posters are too young to remember the Skyline Conference days of the late 1959s and early 1960s. The team was coached by Ray Jenkins (UM record of 14-43). His tenure was from 1958-1963. The Griz played in the old Dornblaser Field on campus.
Some of the current Mountain West teams feasted on the Griz back then. In 1961 the Copper, Silver and Gold finished the year at 2-4 (conference) and 2-6 overall. The top team was Utah State at 9-1-1. Others in the league were Wyoming, New Mexico, BYU, Colorado State, Utah, and the University of Denver.
This was definitely an improvement over the 1958 season. The Montana squad finished at 0-10. The next year they were 1-8. Have things changed that much competitively in the 60 years since the days of that Butte lad Bob O'Billovich (qb/db)?
He was also the starting guard on the football team and baseball shortstop. He was all-Skyline Conference in all three sports. As we know he went on to the Canadian Football League as a player, coach and later GM for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. He is in the Grizzly Hall of Fame.

I went to those games.

Elrod knows this. He also knows " One reason is we are recruiting athletes that have the same talent level as the other Big Sky schools. More talented players reject FCS schools. " The fact is we are not dominate - Elrod knows this also. Elrod is a UM insider. There are a few of those posters here.

Riley says the game has gotten "choppy" in the 2nd half. That's not the word I would use.😴
Love that the Griz have lead from the start, but watching the paint dry is taxing.

Sorry, wrong thread!

5-6, 9-4, 8-5, 3-9, 8-5, 10-3.

Nevada 3-10
Coastal Carolina 6-7
Old Dominion 5-7
Troy St 4-8
West Kentucky 8-6
UMass 2-10
Kenn St 2-10
Charlotte 4-7

Most of those former FCS schools are not exactly kicking ass.

So——Elrod just wants to irritate me?
