Its a Butte thing according to my teammates from that area.
Miners in the Butte copper mines used to say "tap 'er light" to advise against tapping too heavily and causing rockslides in the mines. Later, it was adopted as a substitute for "take it easy" or "goodbye."

It referred to setting the explosive charges in the mine. Explosives of the era were not stable, and if you tapped them too hard into the drilled holes … you got an early retirement.Its a Butte thing according to my teammates from that area.

Interesting. Thanks. Maybe it's just a mining thing. Many of my friends' dads were miners (not in Butte), and I'd hear it from them growing up.

As a Mt Tech grad who worked several years in the mining industry (surface, underground and mine rescue), I concur with this definition.
