A New Age Approach to the Portal....

As unfortunate as the state of college football may be, is this the new manner in which these kids expect to be treated? With Bobby being almost the complete opposite, authoritarian-style leader, could it be a glimpse into the reasoning behind our recruiting struggles? I'm a simultaneous believer and skeptic in Bobby, at the moment, and seeing this simply has me thinking. I'm curious what others might think.

Not the Frank Kush approach. Devils have real winner in Dillingham.

Where are you getting this “authoritarian-style leader” from?

Whatever adjective you may want to call it. It's known that Hauck's style is more old school and Dillingham's approach, which has shown to be a very successful one, would be described in a very opposite manner. I feel it provides a real world example of how recruiting/retaining strategies, philosophies, attitudes and approaches have so heavily changed.

It’s all a bunch of BS. Our society has gotten soft. Treat people with kid gloves, don’t offend, be soft..
It’s a total freakin joke. Football is a warrior gladiator sport. If you aren’t in it to fight, to survive, to win then DONT be part of it!
It’s okay to be yelled at in football practice., or the service or even at work! If you f up you should be called out so you can correct X.
But for people to shrink and cry and have there feelings hurt is truly weakening our society..
ok off my soap box.

Well that’s different from what you said initially. Much of the stuff said about Hauck is not correct.

Do you think it's ok for a coach to get in a player's face and yell "fuck you" multiple times in front of 26k+ people and whoever else might be watching on tv?

While I can appreciate Dillingham's approach, I tend to agree with Hauck's take on the portal (at least I think it's his take), if you don't want to be here...there's the door.

I'm okay with that. It's only one small piece of what goes on in football. Do you think that Fife might have said something inflammatory to set Bobby off? Probably shouldn't happen very often; I agree with that. Are you okay with a player saying F-U back to the coach multiple times on the sidelines on tv?

Maybe it's a trick to see who isn't committed to the program, so that others can be played more in the playoff games.

Honestly, I like this approach. Especially at Montana's level. We're seeing evidence that some of the top performers from 2023 went somewhere and it didn't work out, now they're in the portal yet again. Being able to assist the kids and not take a hard line of showing them the door and telling them they're dead to us could be really helpful - especially if during the portal process the kid realizes better that Montana is the best spot for him.

No idea if Fife said something first and I've never heard anyone say that he did. But it's football, I get it, sometimes emotions get the best of people. My opinion however is that it was way over the top on Hauck's part. I know Fife finally gave it back a bit, but I don't know what he said. It was very obvious what Hauck said however. If Fife returned the favor, then so be it. One can only take so much berating before you've had enough. That situation was on Hauck, not Fife....except of course, whatever he did to warrant the personal foul penalty in the first place. The lack of discipline on this year's team was not very "Hauck-like" but that's for a different discussion I suppose.

I am okay with pushing back a bit with a coach, and I did some of that myself back in the day, but I would never say F-U to a head coach and would never do any of that type of stuff on the sidelines during a game. I'm not trying to justify whatever Bobby did, and I don't know what he did/said, but it's never a good idea for a player to do what Fife appeared to do. Unless you are fine with the consequences or plan to hit the road. I'm sure Fife will get multiple opportunities, but some or most coaches are going to talk to the Griz coaches. If a friend calls a Griz coach, I assume the Griz coach will be honest.

I really like it. I understand the door can't stay open forever, though.

I think you hit the nail on the head there...chances are both of them knew he (Fife) wasn't going to be sticking around and it's probably safe to say there was no love loss between them.

You, me and the rest of Montana taxpayers are bobby's boss. As such, using Hauck's logic, should he or Vigen be out sniffing other coaching opportunities, they should be immediately and summarily fired without a buyout. Agreed?
