In the corporate world when a CEO fails to deliver profits or ROI he/she looses the support of their board members. Case in point when Boeing Corporation faced the recent disastrous events of airframe failures coupled with inferior or late to market new products they proceeded to “fall on their sword” as the saying goes. Make no mistake the BOD had a a great deal of input in that decision. Anyone one who buys a ticket to a Grizzly sporting event is automatically a stock holder. Maybe it’s time for a stockholder revolt?
One need only look at the success of Leon Costello, the AD at our sister institution down the road. True, he has the benefit of 16,000 student athletic fees vs. our 10,000+but what MSU has accomplished not just with student fees but large private donations is remarkable. It goes far beyond just building brick and mortar but creating an environment that breeds success. Have the Griz lost our expectations for dominance or settled for mediocrity? Quite possibly the real answer is complacency that has festered itself into the halls of the athletic department? Yesterday’s performance on the football field was a prime example of not being just outplayed but out recruited. We’re not as big, as fast or as mean as our competitors. Hell, yesterday two of the star bobcat football players WERE FROM MISSOULA! Think I read where 8 of the top ten in state football recruits have chosen to attend MSU. If true that is a comdenation of our football staff. I just watched the Lady Griz basketball team get manhandled by the Minnesota women’s team by 39, that’s right 39 points. I won’t go deep into the women’s instate recruiting but we just cannot seem to get the blue chip women to come to the U. If I remember correctly last year’s women’s softball team won 2 league games. Should we have seen that coming? The previous years teams did not fare much better.
It’s easy to create scapegoats like the BOR or low student populations or legislature’s failure to provide adequate funding but just like the Boeing CEO who fell on his sword maybe it’s time to wield that sword in the athletic department?
