Butte is a city of contradictions. Mountainous terrain very close to the Continental Divide. Built around the Richest Hill on Earth copper mining(mile high, mile deep), now the site of probably the most toxic body of water on earth. Historic 'Downtown' is one of the highest points in the city with a good view eastward to the valley and Airport. No wonder an elevation is Debatable. A good overall view is had from I-15 Southbound just off the Divide.City and county recognize 5538’
Always liked Butte. Plan ahead, and take in the St. Patrick's Day Parade and drunk. Large area of 'downtown' are blocked off so people can mill about, drink their brains out, and no open container law enforced. Total zoo, but worth the trip. Pre-arrange for a designated driver to get back to your Hotel/Motel. Its cheaper than a night in the Crowbar Inn.
