Vigen's Next Stop

Oh I see. That really would be an interesting strategy. But do you really think you would find a lot of players that have the opportunity to go to the P5 right away to come to the FCS? Even if you told them you were cool with them moving up if the opportunity presents itself? Most 18yo are not prepared to step on the field at a place like UM even if they are FBS quality. Also the cats out of the bag, they know they can do this anyway. We are like JC was forever.
There are A LOT of guys in those areas that wind up at DII or bad FCS teams just because of where they are and the leagues they play in. Lots of players down there that never crack the starting line up for their high school teams that would be all-state if they played in Montana. Players get recruited based on game film and camps, and there is a lot of players down in those areas that A) never wind up starting, and B) can't afford to go to skills and development camps. The end result of this is that they wind up at small schools, finally get their chance, and it turns out they are pretty good. I'm certain many of those types of players would prefer to play ay a program like Montana in lieu of some low rate DII or FCS program.

I really don’t give a crap about Vigen and whether he stays or goes. The thing that won’t go in Bozeman is the ridiculous amount of out of state money that has come into the valley over the last several years and is driving their rapid escalation in fund raising.

I would caution fans not to speculate on the possibility of their coach leaving and thinking the grass would be greener. I think there are some high level former cat players who would immediately be at the top of the list who have proven themselves good coaches at the college level, who would be far more invested personally than Vigen, and would also be a boon for their program.

I 1000% agree with you. Here is the thing with that... Let's just use Bobby Hauch as an example. Do you thing he would use this as a recruiting tool? Many coaches will not (Take Dabo for example) they are all about the portal when it helps them out, but HATE IT and say it is ruining college sports when it goes the other way. I see Bobby as one of those coaches (In My Opinion). If an FCS coach can truly look at it the way you are talking, and recruit that way, they would dominate the FCS no matter what coach came in.
Agreed. Look for opportunities in chaos. I don’t think this staff would ever do it. Thats not me saying I dislike the staff or anything, it’s just that I get the sense they want everyone to bleed maroon and silver like it’s 2000 when the current landscape is that very few bleed any colors.

That's been tried again and again. The team that wins the in state recruiting battle pretty much always is the better team. Most of UM and MSU's best players have been in state and many are walk-ons. There is a huge difference between players that really want to be here and players who come here because they don't have a better option elsewhere.
In-state recruiting is important, but the team that wins the MT recruiting battle is not the best team. A large number of impact players and starters are recruited out of state. This is becoming even more true with the portal.

I’m interested as to why this idea intrigues you so much as a Griz fan considering that UM has lost very few important players to the transfer portal.
I guess, in a sentence: It’s not about who we could lose to the portal; it’s about who we could get out of HS because of the portal.

You're going to watch many Montana-born players kick ass Saturday. Unfortunately, most are playing for the Cats.

I agree. Vigen is great but you put a guy like Bobby Daly at HC and cats could really progress. Just look what he did to our defense this year.

Waiting for the announcement of the big Cat fund-raising effort to expand the stadium with suites and seats (to get 1,000 more than UM). Largely Yellowstone Club-backed, I heard. I think Montana is also in the stadium expansion mode too, but I haven't heard anything specific.

For an engineering school, that stadium is objectively hideous.

The starting safeties might start at Northern Colorado and nowhere else in the Big Sky. Outside of Wilson, no other D player would start in the Big Sky.

I know this is old news but I just saw this again and it ticks me off. And I’m a Cats fan! The Griz safety room is good and it’s populated by a bunch of Montana kids who have worked their tails off. It’s basically Missoula boys and then the best guy has made it to this level all the way from Fairfield. Why the heck would a Griz fan throw shade on them like that?

I feel like you've been around here long enough to interact with or see one of Growler's many persona's, but maybe not.

He's always been like this.

Because the poster is a dick.
