We had Schmidt drop in on the pod and chat with us for a few hours this week. We give a bit of time to call out some highlights from the Poly game and then reflect more on the program and where it's at right now. From there we give a fairly in depth look at UC Davis, some of their playmakers, and how their games and stats have shaped up so far this season. Closing, as always - fan questions! Here's links to web/spotify/apple or just search up Griz Fan Pod in your podcasting app.

When Hauck said, previously, that they would be conservation on O to not screw anything up, and let the D win the game for us; that was, I assume, prior years when the D was much better than the O. Things are different this year. In my view, the D was pretty good, but not great, all along this year, except for several games where they gave up a ton of points and big plays. The D seems to keep improving, with the exception of those big play games. The D seems better now that some of our veterans have been back from injury long enough to get back up to top speed. And, the apparent playing of more zone and not giving up big plays, have obviously helped.

I have no clue why the O has gone downhill in recent games, or what is going on with the QB's. I know the opponents are loading up against the run, but I still can't figure out how the run game was so weak last game. Like many of you, I assume Gillman is hurting a bit.

The receivers are really stepping up, and at least 5 of them are playing very well. I thought they had this potential for the last few years, but didn't think they were ever consistent enough or lived up to the potential.

I don't know much about the o-line and have to rely on my friends who know or played o-line. I haven't been watching games with them in recent times.

ST teams seems to have improved and gotten more to the normal quality of Bobby's ST's. I like our punter/kicker. I told him that at practice last week, we have a brief discussion, and he seemed to generally appreciate the comment. Bergen didn't look injured or sore on his punt return. He looked like he really wanted to take it to the house. He seemed to be more aggressive in not fair catching.

my take......is being over aggressive on D, Tim Plough has an impressive record as an offensive co-od as well and could sniff this out early if we over pursue. Davis has 1500 yds on the ground average 4.3 per carry. we do not want to get chewed up in their run game and creative play making......not to over pursue before the play devolps following the line could be........... hopefully, Tim and Roger will not have to adjust and have our players ready to play the TEAM and not just the game.

Forcing them to run the ball may be the best way for this game not to turn into a shootout like Eastern or Weber. I don’t know if we can.

I agree with sticking to assignments and not risking blitzes that may open up holes. We definitely can’t get sucked up into the run and get burned over the top in their play action game. They have had some big deep shots this year and can pick apart zones when Hastings is on his game. We need to mix up coverages and looks. I like some of the zone blitzes we had shifting our backers up and back which resulted in one pick against Cal Poly.

Larrison’s versatility makes him a scary dude. He hasn’t been as effective in the run especially at the second level breaking big plays, but has been efficient. He is dangerous like Junior in that he can shift out and play out of the slot or the backfield. When he is on a wheel route with an underneath backer in man or a soft spot in a zone he can make a defense pay. They are creative in finding ways to get the ball into his hands.

Guys, come on, get your head in the game. Muting your mic at random then splicing in some poor quality re-reading of questions. Listening to your Windows 11 notifications all pod. Andrew’s weird audio distortion throughout the pod. You’re better than this. I have half a mind to ask for a refund. You guys are acting like this is some sort of free pod. Hit the showers!

Yeah that’s my bad - busted twice there haha

well here we are at halftime.........mthoopsfan your point on the receivers not quite living up to
their potential....as we can see tonight it is not the players..its the passer.
i agree with take on the D as well.......tonight this D is playing a C+ game..passable but not cutable.
wolf the first TD by Davis was mixed direction and the Griz all follow the line and Lars, classic

offensive seems out of sorts, the defense really looks out of sorts. Davis puts up 2 field goals and griz
put up a zero. hope this is a tale with a story line of two-halves.

QB's were off at times, but receivers had some drops and the one where the receiver had stepped out of bounds (for now reason) and then came back in. The 2 picks were bad. The D played a pretty good game tonight. Way better than C+. Davis got 386 yards. In prior 4 games, Davis has gotten 622, 549, 671 and 548 yards. You should brush up on your football knowledge of defense.

what is there to brush up, 30-14, again passable but not cutable. nice to be aggressive, however,
Aggies took advantage of this and over pursuit. if you really watch the davis defense they played
excellent assignment football and did not over pursue.
