Haslam's Recent Interview on Where UM Is

Unfortunately these days, that's the go-to when you don't have an actual, concrete argument: Label the person with a political term you believe to have negative connotations. So sad.
So you think calling someone a liberal or a Democrat is “labelling” someone with a political term? Are you not a liberal? You post like one. In any event, you do think money grows on trees for the athletic dept. “if we go FBS, the money will come. Why have a plan, we can do one later.”

Let me say up front, I don't know what percentages currently contribute to the athletic budgets.

With that said, I'd think we'd draw more money with both basketball programs, softball, and soccer.

Also, how much more $$$$ could we generate from alcohol sales, if they could sell it all over WaGriz and Dahlberg? .

If we fans knew what % of every alcohol sale would go to GRIZ athletics, we'd all be willing to buy a few beers every game.

How about additional revenue from GRIZ gear sales? How about a small tax statewide, going towards additional funds for all the state schools, not private schools?

Also, I'd think there'd be a better revenue generator for television, streaming, and radio broadcasts, if we were in a better conference. Plus revenue sharing with teams with bigger fan bases would help some.

Personally, I know I'd be willing to purchase products and services from sources that would help generate additional athletic revenue.

How about online split the pots held weekly or monthly year around?

Work out a few concerts a year with Montana and regional acts at Missoula and Bozeman venues, with a good percentage of revenue go towards each school.

How about working with Uptop for promoting them and the schools? We as fans commit to Uptop instead of Nike, Reebok, Adidas, Jordan, etc. Push push Uptop nationally. We should be doing this anyway. Chase Reynolds, what would it take?

How about the U of M starting their own energy and nutrition company producing our own products? Also get business students into this.

Feel free to add ideas.

Honestly, I think we're underestimating additional revenue options.
You lost me at "small tax increase."

Over a million people in the state...stadium capacity is under 26,000. Both schools together less than 50,000.

You really think the rest of the state is going to prioritize subsidizing this? Not a chance. It's just a non-starter.

Increase student fees? Not a chance - they tried and failed.

The move up should be almost exclusively funded by those buying tickets.

I don't see it.

Better find a sugar daddy with deep pockets...

I don't have a dog in this fight... But would you say that UM has a "Concept of a Plan"

I don’t think we know if the State would subsidize. Other states have seen it beneficial to do that for their institutions. Football is an economic driver in a lot of ways. I think it would have some support in a football state. This hasn’t been presented to our legislature for anyone to know for sure so not a big fan of takes like this.

You don't see it because $30,000,000/26,000/11=$105/ticket/game. Those are P5 numbers.

I would pay that. I venture a guess (given how poor most Griz fans on here present themselves) most would not.

It would be interesting (and probably impossible) to look at the bar income on Saturdays in towns across Montana. Do sales go up in those bars when the Cats or Griz are playing? If they do, (and I would assume they would) then you can also quantify how much money is spent in those local towns at local businesses. It isn't just about how much money is brought into the university towns.

...and there you have it...

Now, imagine how hundreds of thousands Montana tax payers might feel about subsiding those who won't pay for their own events...

Not gonna happen in MT.

Griz need a roster of sugar daddies.

Closing Nothern (already rumored) and maybe Western would help
I'm with you in spirit, but I think Western is not on the way out. Have you seen their new field? They are doing new builds and growing down there. Their enrollment is solid and they are near capacity. I've heard rumors that they may send the youth challenge up to Northern to make new dorm space available at Western. On top of that, they offer degrees that are not available anywhere else in the system, to my knowledge, and they serve a niche. I'm not even sure they are a net financial loss for the UM side anymore.

I, too, heard that youth challenge is moving to Northern.

Read the room. You think the MT legislature will prioritize subsidizing college athletics with tax payer money?

You, sir, are not paying attention.

Can you imagine Hoops's opposition to the Washington's giving UM money for WAGriz? He would argue that UM doesn't have the funds to support the continual maintenance required or the fan base to fill it. Thank God people like him are nowhere near the people making these decisions.

Yeah - I thought in the interview (and I'm almost certain Haslam has mentioned it before) Haslam said they are pretty much topped out at what they can charge per ticket for football games.
Did he say why?

Additional trips to Frisco that include multiple home playoff games might be a propellant for the fan base...I don't know.

I just think absent some whale donors, moving up is not fiscally possible in our state under current conditions.
