Complimentary Football

take it easy on me, this is my first thread and I have only posted twice on this forum.

I have watched and cheered for Griz football for over 20 years. To me the griz identity has always been a strong fundamental defense with great tackling and pressure, good special teams, and a brutalizing ground game. that is a formula for winning a lot of football games. I love the griz offense this year, its more modernized and have the ability to put up big numbers. I am not sure all of that is complimentary when you have a young defense that is still getting used to the speed of this level of football, and a new coordinator. I think the defense has the potential to be really good, but they could benefit from the offense using up more clock to prevent opposing offenses from running a high number of plays. I am not sure if the Griz are capable of running the ball and controlling the clock? I know they can put up points and yards in a hurry. I am not pointing any blame on any particular position group or any player, but rather asking if our strength and conditioning program is as good as it was during the early to mid 2000's? In my view I believe the most important coach to any successful football program starts with the strength and conditioning coach/coordinator. I believe that is where teams create identity, toughness, and trust. I am just not seeing that nasty, mean, I'm going to put you in the dirt all game long type of unit like in the past. I could be way off, just my thoughts.

Thanks for having me,

Go Griz

Unfortunately the Griz owned a +10 and +6 TOP in the teams 2 worst defensive performances.
This would have been a big gripe for me last year when the O left the D out to dry.
Would be great if we could consistently rely on at least 3 yards and a cloud of dust instead of resorting to the quick passing game and the occasional incompletion on first then its time to pass both 2nd and 3rd down.

I agree with you 100%. I just think throwing 45 times a game provides too much clock stoppage. I know we won the TOP and first down battles, but we didn't have more rushing and passing yards. I think if the offense can put up 200+ on the ground which I believe this team is very capable of doing, it keeps the clock running and takes away from the number of plays the opposing team can run. In my opinion if we were to have rushed for over 200 in that game we win by 2 scores at least.

It all comes down to to Gillman. He just needs to STOP getting 10+ YPC. It matriculates us down the field WAY too fast, limits his carries (another complaint from egrizzers) and has us scoring way too fast. After 5-6 yards he needs to just go down to one knee to slow things down a bit.

you can take my words and twist them how you like, but that is not at all what I am saying. The Griz threw the ball 45 times last game, Gilman had 12 rushes. Gilman is averaging 9 ypc. do you think that is enough? I enjoy talking football and the back and forth is fun.

Do you think they put up 55 points if Gilman has 20+ rushes?

It is a joke he has made a few times, he wasn't trying to twist words to debate you. He is using satire to make the point that the reason Gilman doesn't get more carries is because he takes them so far and breaks them to the endzone too often. He is making the point that our TOP and his carries are partly so low because Gilman is breaking off so many long TD runs.

I'm not trying to condescend to you, I just know that you said you were knew here and this place can be a tad aggressive at times. I just wanted to let you know what he was doing in using that rhetorical device. He wasn't trying to twist your words to make you look dumb. Glad to have you here. Go Griz.

I tend to agree with AZ most of the time. I think he is a knowledgeable poster. Thanks for looking out, Elrod!

I guess what I am still struggling with is the OT play. Just put the ball in Gilmans hand.

I am not here to argue with anyone or make this forum more contentious than it already is. I just want to talk football.

Always happy to do that, my man. I don't think it would have been a WRONG play to give the ball to Gilman. I think that if our LT had gotten a block on the guy and Fife had been able to have a shot at making a play, then we would be talking about it differently.

The hard part about our offense and saying "why didn't they hand the ball to Gilman," is that the vast majority of what we are running is RPO. There is a run option and a pass option, and we ask the QB to make the read at the line and attack where the defense looks weakest. Fife has been showing himself to be absolutely great at that. It is quite likely that there was a run option on the play, and Fife saw something he liked.

If we hold them to a fg which we should have, I believe we pound the ball down their throat. I feel that Pease was going for a quick strike to take the momentum back like he did against NDSU last year. If not for having a backup tackle there’s a chance we praise the call. Hindsight is always 20/20.

Now if you want to talk about double reverses and qb throwbacks I would certainly much rather see a positive run and a better position on second down than 2nd and long which has led to a lot of third and long.

We can also say that they should have held them to 20 points also, but we saw how that turned out.

AZ is a smart sumbitch, no doubt.

And yes, I've made the joke a number of times here when people talk about Gillman's limited carries. Seems a guy who averages 4 YPC gets more carries than one who averages 10+YPC and a TD every 6.8 carries. I mean, statistically his high YPC average DOES reduce the # of carries required.

Coincidentally, he and Ostmo BOTH have exactly 68 carries through 6 games. Gillman averges 9.3, Ostmo averages 6.8. Our QB's have 56 combined carries, averaging 2.58YPC (including sacks). It would appear both Gillman AND Ostmo are being underutilized.

Assuming we will see that change down the stretch if the weather ever gets cold.

Can't think of any situation where averaging 43 points per game, in any offensive scheme, is a bad thing. If the Griz had this offense last year, there would be another championship banner hanging in WaGriz.

Agreed. Where is the age of Aquarius when you need it?
Believe it or not it has started. Actually started in 1968. First the destruction of the old age (what is happening now) and simultaneously the beginning of the new Age.
I know only a little about football but I know a lot about the Kali Yuga.

Can't ever seem to get all three phases of the game to align in a single season.
Oh well. Pretty fortunate to have one of the best gameday experiences in the country. These guys could win four games a season and it would still be fun as hell every weekend. Things could be a lot worse!

Anti-move-uppers disagree…
