Good, Bad, Ugly - EWU

Well, that was a shootout for the ages. It’s safe to say 17 point Griz leads are NEVER safe! Up 17 to start the 4th and then to see 42 points scored in that quarter alone between both teams was crazy to see!

Good:
- a win on the Red Rag is always a good win, regardless of what it looked like. We hadn’t won there since 2010 when it was installed
- Fife had some heroics last week, and picked right up where he left off. He dropped some absolute dimes in that game. 30-42 for 364 and 5 TDs is a huge game. I hadn’t seen Ah Yat make those big throws quite yet
- loved seeing the offense get the TEs involved in this one. A career day for Barker with 3 grabs and 2 TDs. Then Olson scores his first TD to put the nail in it. And Schafer had a big 3rd and long grab.
- really great to see Keelan White get more involved. He had a great thing with Fife and picked up at least 3-4 1st downs on third down. Had 7-75
- Bergen had a huge game with 7-150 with 1 TD and some awesome screens
- can’t say enough about Ostmo 15-160 1 TD and Gillman 11-109 and 1 TD.
- the Griz had over 300 yards rushing for the 3rd straight game and 700 total yards of offense
- the defense saw some great 1 on 1 pass break ups by true freshman Loud, and also Gradney and Gordon
- the O Line has been blowing open run lanes and did a good job protecting Fife
- as Hoops pointed out, that EWU QB has been really good completing 75%+ of his passes. Griz made him go 58% and made him a bit uncomfortable at times

Bad:
- the pass defense as a whole looked lost and confused. I think they were really missing Meyer, Klucewich, and Wilson for that first half. The young guys need to figure it out fast.
- gave up 6.7 yards per carry and 551 total yards

Ugly:
- to be skating backwards on a likely on-side kick is maddening. That bit them before with a lead at EWU a few years back so I was shocked the coaches weren’t shouting it from the roof tops
- our kick coverage needs to be revamped.

Feel free to add anything you saw!

Good:
-Offense and Fife looked awesome all night and for a change kept us in the game.
-Bergen getting his first TD
-TEs getting involved in the passing game
-Eli Godmode Gilman

Bad:
-Defense as a whole was awful in the 2nd half especially the lack of pressure on the QB, tackling and in the Secondary.

Ugly:
-That God awful red turf

Great write up, agree completely.
Good - offense, play call was right on
Bad - defense - secondary, tackles were terrible again
Ugly - special teams, kick return yardage and of course onside kick - everybody but Griz new it

When they got the onside kick I had flash backs and the worst fear grew over me and I was thinking the game was going to be over for the Griz. It was maddening.
Yet we still had a 10 point lead? You were thinking the game was going to be over with a 10-point lead?

Honestly, I don't know how anyone saw that onside kick coming. EWU was set up as if they were kicking it normally and there was still 14 minutes left to play in the game with EWU down only 10 points. That's an eternity of time for things to happen without needing an onside kick. It was an extremely risky but fantastic play call by EWU to pull that out, but I find it interesting that so many people say "I saw it coming a mile away".

Any other opponent on any other field, I would agree with you. Not after the disaster a few years ago.

I didn't really expect it, per se. But I think a team has to be in "safe" there. Do you have your hands team in? No, but you need to be aware and play it conservatively

I’m just saying on past history one would think that at least one or two of the coaches would say “hey guys let’s not bail too early just in case they try to sneak an on-side kick on us”. It seems like an easy conversation to have and at least get the kids thinking it could happen. I literally said to my wife and my friends who were watching the game with me “I wouldn’t be surprised if they onside kick this.”

Greg sundberg was saying on the radio that the guys are not supposed to start moving back until the ball is kicked and they were moving early. If they had played it the way they were supposed to, they would have been in position to make a play on the ball. So even if they hadn't known it was coming, they still could have defended it except they were technically out of position.

I was at the game and, in that moment, it was almost called for...game flow had definitely switched to the eaglets and they needed to keep that momentum going to have any chance of winning. 🪙🪙

The kick return team should NEVER retreat like they did...even on opening kick-off.

Their special teams coach saw THAT coming a mile away and thus called the on-side kick.

That's the problem.
