In recent seasons, Kennedy High School boys basketball teams have started slowly before coming on strong heading into the playoffs.
But this season, the Cougars are looking to buck that trend, in hopes that a stronger overall record would improve their seeding when the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs begin.
Kennedy had won seven of eight heading into Monday's Hoops for the Hungry game against Capital Christian to post a 12-5 record and 3-0 mark in the Metro Conference.
As expected, senior guard Zach Graves has been the catalyst. Graves was averaging 17.7 points per game heading into this week despite defenses aimed solely at slowing him down.
"Pretty much with Zach, he'll catch the ball and there's a man guarding him and a man waiting for him to drive right and a man waiting for him to drive left," Kennedy coach Al Seyford said.
Seyford said Graves, who will play at Montana next season, has been patient and keeps his teammates involved.
"He hasn't really forced the issue," Seyford said. "Slowly but surely he's trusting his teammates. ... Chemistry is already better when your better players pass the ball."
Teams looking to shut down Graves have discovered Kennedy does have other capable scorers.
Junior guard Labrent Chappell is averaging 12.7 points after averaging 25 a game for the JV team last season.
Seyford said Chappell is showing progress in taking good shots and playing tight defense.
"He's really tailored his game to fit in the offensive structure," Seyford said. "His shot selection has been great. ... We're really excited about him defensively."
One player who is asked to do a lot defensively is 6-foot-2 senior Julius Arterberry. He is the third Cougar averaging double figures at 10.9 points per game.
"We ask him to do a lot," Seyford said. "Julius is a forward guarding the other team's big man, and he's also up front in our press."
