not bad.

four losses, three on the road--washington, denver, colorado state. all close games, all winnable. two excellent road victories, at oregon, at loyola marymount. only one big clunker--northern colorado. at home, conference. bad.

still, who woulda predicted we would be this good so far? not out of the realm of possibility that the griz could be 14-0 right now, nationally ranked.

positives:
1. development of qvale. best big man at montana since engellant.
2. a.j.--nuff said.
3. cherry: pretty much as advertised. quickest player at montana in years, adjusting nicely to the college game. huge upside if shooting improves.
4. selvig--playing hurt, but playing. any minute from him is a good minute.
5. defense. especially with cherry and young, this team has the permiter tenacity its lacked in prior years. with qvale in the paint, team capable of playing stellar defense.
6. recruiting: griz got the kid i was hoping for (kareem jamar) plus a kid who may have been a gift (vaughn autry), with a couple of big men (reader and hutchison) in the wings. and we've got one more slot to fill (woods?) athleticism and height on the way.

disappointments (all with a silver lining):
1. young. can kill a great falls, but has largely disappeared against the better teams. still, could quickly turn into a positive if he adjusts to this level of play.
2. ward. a disappointment only when compared to andrew strait. still, a tough kid in the paint, could turn quickly into a surprise as he matures at this level.
3. staudacher. not the breakout year we were all hoping for. shot remains inconsistent. still, a potential assassin from deep, could heat up in conference.
4. mcgillis. doesn't seem to be playing within himself. jacking up a three late at denver was not the shot we needed in that situation, not the shot you'd expect from an experienced fifth-senior. still, an athletic role player who will help in conference.

prognosis? excellent. big dance a real possibility, with a seeding that could get us past a first round game.

City, pretty dead on review so far. WE are damn close to being unbeaten right now. I would like to add, our perimeter game is coming around, and has been solid the last 3 games. Had that element been there for the losses, we would be unbeaten. This team is impressive, especially defensively. Even more impressive is our future, which you touched on. Tinkle has brought in one solid recruit each year from the HS ranks, yet the class of 2010 ratings wise is his best yet. I have a feeling he will add another player to this already impressive list (from ESPN). I hope it is a true big man. I pray Jamar sticks to his verbal.

We are all impressed by Cherry, by reading the comments on Jamar and Autry, they too are tenacious defenders. With their additions, could next year finally be the year we become a pressing and trapping team? I think Tinkle already has the depth and talent to press and trap more this year! I really question why we are not doing those things already with the linep of Cherry, AJ, Selvig, Qvale, and Mcgillis/Young? I always wondered this, but after seeing the defense they played against Fresno State, I am sold this group can is capable of doing some damage with pressure defense.

Please Wayne, unleash more pressure defense this year! What do you all think?

2010 Player Commits
NAME POS HT WT SCHOOL RANK GRADE STATUS NOTES
Kareem Jamar Small Forward 6-5 190 Westchester H.S. (CA) SF #33 91 Verbal
Vaughn Autry Point Guard 6-2 170 Junipero Serra H.S. (CA) PG #64 87 Signed
Billy Reader Power Forward 6-8 230 Lake Oswego H.S. (OR) PF #202 78 Signed
Michael Weisner Small Forward 6-7 180 Walla Walla H.S. (WA) 40 Signed

2010 Lineup with 1 more to add- Who will it be? Honestly to God, with the exception of Weisner, everyone else can and should be capable of playing quality minutes next year. The only reason I am not sure of him is because he is the only incomer having yet to get more attention.

PG/SG- Cherry, Stockton, Autry
SG/SF- Autry, Taylor, Young
SF- Jamar, Young, Taylor,Selvig, Weisner (hope he improves this year),
PF-Selvig, Ward, Reader, Hutchison
Center- Qvale, Selvig, Hutchison, Reader

Starting lineup (if incoming FR live up to hype): Cherry, Young, Jamar, Selvig, Qvale
6th through 10th- Autry, Taylor, Reader, Ward, Stockton
Role: Hutchison and Weisner (I think he redshirts though).

Hard to believe a player as good as Hutchison will be pressing for PT. If our bigs can develop a little more attitude and banging, Tinkle will have a luxury of adding any kind of player he wants.

Good posts guys! What is the deal with Weisner's 40 rating. Is he still growing or did he get a rating after some bad games? He is pretty skinny.

Only thing I disagree with on City's initial post is Ward as a disappointment. Now, I don't think you meant it harshly, but I love watching Ward when he gets minutes. He's super-physical and you will never see him half-assing it. I think he's going to be great, possibly have a straight-like Soph. year next year?

I agree Ward has Strait like potential. I do not see him getting the same opportunity as Strait had, until his JR year. For rest of this year and next year Qvale and Selvig will be limiting his opportunity. I feel his game could allow him to play SF too, if need be. Add Reader and Hutchison into the mix, I just do not see how any of our 4's get the opportunity to put up the numbers Strait did. Strait was a great player for us, but he was for the most part forced into the minutes he got early. That was a huge benefit for him statistically the others just will not have.

After AJ leaves, I just do not see the GRIZ having any 1 player putting up huge numbers for the next 4 years. Tinkle has the talent and depth to spread the wealth around throughout a year. We are already starting to see that of late. We are beginning to lean less on AJ already, because it is not as much of a necessity as other players develop. That is a good sign for the GRIZ. Yet it is nice to know, when necessary we have AJ to turn to.

IMO.. It is hard to think about next year because with AJ, this is the big year for the GRIZ
Infact if the Griz do not win the tourney and go to the dance.. I could see them going far in the NIT

QVale and Cherry will improve even more the second half of the year. Stauds is heating up ( 4 for 5 from 3) last game and his 3 percentage is already back up to 41.4%...you have to look back to Douhly at
.39% and Martin at 37.6 to find a shooter close to him .. but yes Stauds is not up to 45% like the last few years.. and I still think Jack will start shining his last 15 or so games of his carrer also. Young is improving also.

If we get Selvig to play BIg minutes... we will win 80% of big sky games !

This is the Griz's year. !!

As previously stated, 3 of the 4 recruites so far have singed and kareem jammar is the only verbal right now. so before we all get excited we need him to sign first! so far its been a nice year, sloppy plays at times, but I think we are turning the corner and it should be exciting!

We need to fill the stands no questions asked! all of america may not realize it, but the adams center is one of the best places to see a game in the country. i think we have one of the best sports complexes in the country(football & basketball),the adams center is very similar to maples pavillion at standford, ironically montana is where "monty" got his start! i remember back to the home game when stanford came to town ranked #17 and we whipped them up by 20 or so! that place was rocking, we need to bring that back! forever montana football will the biggest hit in town, but lets bring that same enthusiasm to the rest of the griz B-ball games and enjoy the ride! Tinks is doing a great job and he is the perfect fit, great for the community, knows everybody around town and will be an outstanding recruiter!!!!

LETS GO GRIZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A 40 is the starting point and means that they have not looked at him yet.

i think a healthy selvig could pour in a double double with 3-4 blocks. Aj will be sorely missed as nobody can close out a game like he can. by the end of the year he will be responsible for individually winning 3-4 games by clutch shots or fthrows.
