Wyoming game made official

Nice signature initial move by new AD Haslem. Whether this was already in the works or not, it looks good for him, IMO. I love playing a NW/Western FBS team every year-teams like UW,Wazzu,OSU,UO,Idaho,Fresno,Wyoming,Colorado,CSU, Utah State, UNLV, Nevada should appear every year. Tennessee, and even Iowa, seemed odd. I want a game most Griz fans can easily drive to. This is wonderful. I just hope I don't reprise a stint in the Douglas,WY jail like last time we played down there.

or even San Diego State (reasonably cheap flight on Allegiant).

Just an off the wall thought, people were talking about regional games....I wonder how the NCAA would view a game with the Thunderbirds, Dinos, Golden Bears, Rams and Huskies of the CIS. Would be interesting you have to admit. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CIS_Football" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Haven't the Griz men's basketball team played a Canadian team a few times in the past? Simon Frasier?
Would be interesting but playoff committee would probably not count it as a win and if we lost..oh boy.

I don't know how the NCAA would view a game against a CIS team, but I can tell you this much, it would be ugly. MSU-NORTHERN, opened the 2009 season against the Calgary Dinos in Medicine Hat, agreeing to play Canadian rules. The Lights won handily, and ended up going 3-8 that season. Calgary went on to go 12-2 in the CIS. CIS teams make Western State and Ft. Lewis look like powerhouse football teams.

Believe it or not, Montana had the U of Calgary Dinos on their initial football schedule for 1988 (possibly 89'). I remember thinking "do canadian college teams play CFL rules or American rules?" I still don't know, but I am assuming CFL rules. There was a Canadian kid (ok he was only a year younger than me at the time) down for a recruiting visit here that I befriended (he later played in the CFL) and he was psyched that we were gonna play Calgary. That was one of the things that excited him about playing here. That game never happened, and he went elsewhere. It might be hard to find proof of this anywhere, but I am 100% positive we had Calgary on our schedule. I think Chico State or Eastern New Mexico filled that date.

I believe it. We played Simon Fraser 5 times in the 70's. One game was in Great Falls. Gulp, we lost a couple of those games too.

Checking the media guide:Almost, yep and yep. We definately played Simon Fraser and lost to them twice, but we only played them 4 times. You could have won a lot of money from me 10 minutes ago if you would have bet me that the Griz have ever played in Canada. Simon Fraser 23 Griz 14 in 1974 & SFU 24 Griz 10 in 1975, both in Vancouver (or wherever SFU is). Griz beat the Clansman 41-14 in Great Falls in 73', the last Griz game in Montana not played in Missoula or Bozeman. The Griz are 4-1-1 in Great Falls lifetime. We lost to Eastern Wash in GF 12-7 in 1948 and tied Gonzaga in 1935.
-We traded Simon Fraser for Puget Sound in 1977&78. We beat them by one in Tacoma? and then lost to them at home. Puget Sound? Ouch!
-The Griz played (and lost) to Wyoming 9 straight years in Billings in the 50-60's, including getting shut-out the last 5 straight. Double Ouch! We owe Wyoming big-time.

My bad, we also played them in 1980. Missed it by a year. Beat them in Msla. I believe the campus is in Burnaby. In spitting distance to Vancouver.

Puget Sound was a good D-II team in the '70's, and Montana was just making the transition to I-AA in 1977 (and not a very good team, with football being de-emphasized due to scandal).

Back in the 80's, NAU played U of Manitoba. It didnt count as an official game.

We played one half under NCAA rules, one half under CIS rules.

I think when MSUN played calgary, they played 11-man when MSUN was on offense, and 12-man when Calgary was on offense....if i remember correctly. it took about a quarter for MSUN to account for that 12th player, but after that it was a cakewalk. if UM played them, it would be an awful mess.

Does anyone know if Montana will be getting money from Wyoming to play in this game?

You mean we're having to play Wyoming on the road instead of at Wash-Griz?
Not sure if you're serious, but they're FBS

Yeah, I know. Wyoming a member of the Mountain West along with a total of nine teams, if not mistaken, after Boise State leaves. At least they're still somewhat solvent; not too certain about the WAC, though. Is Idaho going I-A Independent while their other sports teams join/rejoin the Big Sky? I still don't know what that means for the other members of the WAC like Utah St., New Mexico St., San Jose St., etc.
Being that it is apparent that NCAA Rules don't particularly like I-A playing on the road at a FCS school (though Idaho did so a couple years ago while they played the Griz in Missoula, with Tom Cable as their Head Coach), I don't see a reason why a I-A Independent, with the attendant difficulties of filling a schedule, couldn't be allowed to participate in a game on the road at a FCS school and have it at the same time honoured by the NCAA.
With the way the WAC is going, the MWC should be allowed to do the same as as a I-A Independent, if such is allowed to play a road game with an FCS school, that is. I just don't see the difficulties in relinquishing such stringent requirements. But at present, I don't even think that such I-A Independents as Army, Navy, BYU and Notre Dame are allowed to do so either; although the Griz did play Army on a neutral field (Japan) back in the 80s, if not mistaken. The NCAA allows a little, but not a whole lot. I like a little consistency. What's the big deal?

Besides, I was just funnying about Wyoming; likening their situation to Idaho, but evidently not; at least, not at this present time. This remembering what Joe Glenn cited when he was a HC at Laramie;.."Wyoming has only got about 16 top high schools in the state"..etc. About the same as he had in Montana but with the added competition besides.
