WR position discussion/revision 2/spring practices

all I know is we must be deeeeep at wide receiver.....when burke was at central, he was being touted as maybe the best receiver to ever come from here....his junior year when he played w/r, he caught everything, great size, very fast and smart...like a "can't miss" type and Montana was fortunate to land him,,,but it is looking more and more like he may see very little plying time as a griz, as is buried in depth chart for years to come....this is a great problem to have as a giz fan, not so much if you are burke....we have much better than average talent at wide outs as far as the big sky conference goes. ..and burke proves it, as he is not chopped liver, he is a very capable receiver on most teams....go griz !!!!

WHAT IF next year we go 5 wide with Ellis Henderson, Jamal Jones, TraVon Van, Marq Rogers and Jake Wiley. WHAT IF

I just blew my own mind.

I don't think our coaches have the ability to draw up a play with 5 receivers on the. field at once without having at least 2 guys getting caught up in the same area of the field..

Is this a serious comment? Really!?! Our play calling is solid. Can it get better yes & I expect it too. But if you really believe that these coaches don't have clue number one you are a idiot. We saw a little 5 wide late in the year & it created mix match problems. Looking forward to coaches serving up some more of this look in 2014.

Mick needs to evolve with the times more!

Quit sippin on the koo-laid! The play calling this year was far from solid. Our coaches never even took advantage of the best player on the team which is JJ. They need to let go and let him take over the game. Until then, we'll be suckin hind tit! No Big Sky title and one and done in the playoffs. Our coaches are average and that is pushin it..

I do agree though that we have some tremendous talent at the WR position.

Explain what you mean by "take over the game" JJ is definitely the trigger man & I clearly stated that Mick needs to get out of the way with his run first mentality

Just let him do his thing. Give him complete control of the offense. He's not the type of QB just to line up under center. Spread it out and sling it! I want to see the Griz succeed just as much as everyone else. We'll have the talent on offense next year, let's use it..

Understand your thought better now! Giving JJ more control of the offense would be great. Am I wrong or did he hardly ever audible last year? I noticed some check outs really late in the year but not like I think you are trying to get across.

I watch alot of football & this offense, at times, is really similar to the Saints. JJ even reminds me of Brees on a regular basis (minus the big arm). I not sure he had the command of the offense early like you two are both speaking of.

However, he will next year & I would love to see him given the ability to audible out whenever he wants to passes or runs depending on the situation. JJs a very intelligent & accurate passer. Plus he is a coaches son if I am correct...GrizCountry could be on to something significant.

I believe the coaches will allow for more flexibility in this area in 2014. Be careful because I also dont llike teams that assume that they can win the "shoot out" every week. I will stand by the statement I made in another thread. Defense WINS championships.

BTW i was reading through this post earlier & my question is WHY is Stumptown mentioning Jake Wiley in a 5-wide grouping of receivers? I would use Wolcott or Haynes & put Henderson in the slot to prevent him from being doubled.

I didn't notice many at the beginning of the year but like you said he did check out of a few plays towards the end of the season. Next season I'd like see some quick passes over the middle when he's getting blitzed instead of going deep. Teams are definitely going to double team the deep ball leaving the middle of the field open..

To the OP: I'm assuming that your total numbers include TE's and RB's, because the numbers you gave for the WR's don't add to equal your total numbers. A little clarification on that would be nice. Thanks for the info though.

Both of you are making some great points. I was pleased with the 10-3 record given last years turd of a record that's for damn sure. We all seem to have some damn expectations sometimes but success does that

We need a "quick" game for our passing offense that capitalizes on short to mid range throws with playmakers in space (Canada, Van, Henderson, Jones, etc)

Are you talking about the career numbers I gave in the intro. Those are numbers for all the receivers returning over their entire careers here.
Henderson 66 rec 16 td
Jones 42 rec 3 td
Saylor 40 rec 2 td
Naccarato 19 rec 1 td
Haynes 14 rec 0 td
Walcott 11 rec 1 td

All of this returning experience will all be for naught if the Griz are hampered again by boneheaded play calling and lack of adjustments like the past two years..

I agree. I believe the coaches have to play into JJ's talent. He'll be a Senior next year, give him the reigns! We have the talent! Roll the dice!!

WR's have been shakin' up a bit. Most of the two deep is the same except Saylor being moved to TE. Zach Vis, a redshirt Fr I was excited about, has been moved to LB. He's such an athlete though I think he'll be real good there too. Spencer Hale has been moved to safety(as Brint predicted, mabey someone has an inside connection) to get more playing time for his Sr season. I'm also interested to see some of our redshirts from last year perform. We all know what Rogers can do. I want to see Ludeman, Graham, and Carver play. Lets see what them boys can do.

Wolcott still recovering
Haynes lost to injury but Rogers needs spring before he's ready to step in
Naccarato is our next slot and has little if any true competition for the spot
Jordan Harper, Mitch Saylor and Mike Ralston look to be a solid 3 TE set to go big with
Jones is that ideal compliment WR because he's really a #1 guy on most every other team
Henderson only needs to improve his intangibles because he's the BSCs most explosive weapon
8-) ;)

Geez. renewed optimism here - don't bring me back to reality just yet.
