Worst Loss In 50+ Years

I want to look forward to a good run in the playoffs like most Griz fans but this game last week is not easy to get over. In fact, looking at the Griz record for more than the past 50 years ( which can be found in the annual media guides published on Gogriz.com), the margin of loss against the Cats (34 point deficit) is close to the worst loss the Griz have experienced since 1969 (53 years ago) against FCS or D- 1A teams (or formerly D-2 teams before going to 1-AA). And the Cats have not beat the Griz that bad since 1966 (and the margin of loss this last Saturday could have been greater if the Cats had wanted to try). The last worst loss against any FCS team was in 1998 against Western Illinois on the road in the playoffs (52-9). Before that it was a loss to Boise in 1990 (41-3). From 1980 to 1985 the Griz had 4 losses of 34 to 42 points (when Griz were not good). In 1973 the Griz lost to Boise 55-7 and in 1972 lost to South Dakota 35-0. That's it. All things considered it would not be a stretch to say that this was the worst loss ever by the Griz since 1969.

Can the Griz come back from that? Let's hope so and I will be watching.

It actually equals the 2019 brawl.

To me, the 2019 loss to the kitties was worse. I think the Griz were 8-2 going into that game and had just dominated a good Weber team in Wa-Griz the week before. That Griz team wasn't as good as this year's team on defense, but it was much better on offense. The kitties were without Troy Anderson but dominated on both sides of the ball. The margin of defeat was the same as this year - 34 points (14-48). No question in my mind that both are among the worst losses that I can recall.

You are right - I didn't check the last few years. Both losses were bad. But it seemed like this game was worse with Cats having 469 rushing yards.

I agree.

The Cats kept Melliot and Chambers in the whole game, they were running up the score.

The loss at Wofford at home in the playoffs was much worse. The loss to Mass and Coastal in the playoffs at home. The loss at home to DE in the playoffs. Much worse to me.

Hard to blame a team for running up the score when the defense can’t force a single punt or turnover.

I was working out of state in 1993(?) and Tubby Raymond's Delaware team went to Missoula as I recall. The Griz had a huge lead but Delaware had to go to the waggle in their wing-t and came back. At the time, it was a ludicrous score: 49-48. That had to have been painful to watch.

Who was the coach during the Wofford, U Mass and Coastal losses?

If you are suggesting it was the same guy for all, I suggest doing some actual research.

A missed PAT at the end to lose it. Frozen tundra of a field. Sophomore DD. 11/26/93. Only other Griz loss was to the Ducks by 5 as DD had them on the ropes late in his debut.
