Thanks!!

Can we sneak these guys in this year? Note to Hutchinson: Please do not be another soft big that roams the perimeter.

Pretty typical game for Hutchison:

mslacat, you know more about these recruits than anyone. What kind of player is Hutchison? Is he a mainly an inside scorer, mid range, perimeter, etc? I ask because the biggest disappointment I see in the GRIZ bigs of late is the tendency to become "soft", and more like a 2 or 3 than a 4 or 5. Many here feel and know Hasquet is capable of putting up much better numbers than he does, yet we see him play role of a perimeter player. Selvig is starting to look to be the same as Hasquet. Qvale at least battles and is learning. I am so tired of seeing good bigs turn into perimeter players here. I honestly do not mind a big having a perimeter shot, but only when the supporting cast can accomodate that. With this years cast, our bigs belong inside, yet they either do not do it, or we are not demanding it from them. I do not want to see another big with the outside tendencies. What we need this year are "tough" bigs that are willing to do the dirty work. Granted I also like a versatile big, but that versatility does no good when they do not utilize their best assets in height, strength, and toughness. Seriously, Hasquet and Selvig are blessed with size, decent athleticism, and versatile skills, yet they are being wasted in my opinion.

I am not concerned about Woods and Cherry, they are smaller players. I feel Woods will be 3 for us. I want to know what kind of player Hutchison is now. This way if he turns out "soft" in a few years, maybe, just maybe we can finally determine it is with the system and coaching or the players.

BTW, I hate being so hard on Hasquet this year. However, he is a SR and I expected a much better player this year from him. I expected him to be in the running for player of the year and shoe in 1st team all conference. Right now, he is nothing more than honorable mention, at best, if lucky.

There is not a lot of stat info on Hutchison on Maxprep.com or the local Longview newspaper, so most of what i have to say is based on reading a bunch of stuff and getting my own feeling for him. Hutchison is a late bloomer, playing on a very good team. He has been 6-9ish for a few years, but it has taken him a while for him to catch up to his height. After last years basketball season he was on a few teams radar, but not many out side of the northwest. This spring and summer though he played in a lot of AAU tourneys and his stock really took off. By the end of summer he had 15 or so schools recruiting him. The reason his recruiting took off was "potential". He runs the floor very well often beating other centers down court. He has very good hands, and can play with his back to the basket or facing and can shoot out to 15 or so feet. I do not think he shoots the 3 ball. I have also heard he is not afraid to bang down low. The down side I have heard to his inside play is, he needs to learn to play smarter, he has got him self into foul trouble on a few occasions this winter silly fouls on defence and offence. He has played extremely consistent this winter always seemingly scoring 12-14 points a game and 7-9 rebounds a game. He also has the luxury to play on a front line that goes 6-7, 6-9, and 6-9 and he starts at the power forward spot. If you had to compare him to a present Griz player I think he is closer to kyle sharp than any other. Bigger, but not quite the offencive skills (remember Sharp averaged 27 points a game in high school).

I think Hutchison is going to be closer to the old style forwards / centers the older Griz team.

Thank you. I cannot believe I am going to say this. I am glad he is not 3 shooter. (bite my tongue). There are positions that are meant to shoot 3's and those that are not. All dependent on what the team needs. Right now, we do not need anymore bigs that prefer the 3.

I saw Hutchinson play two years ago at state and he was still a little awkward and gangly. But Mark Morris is a good school with good coaching so I'm sure he's progressed. But I'll check around out here and see what I hear.

Also I saw Griz assistant Andy Hill recruiting at yesterday's King Holiday Hoopfest in at Hec-Ed in Seattle. I'm not certain as to who in particular he was looking at, since there were a number of players that are DI caliber.

Besides most of the Pac-10 coaches being there, I also saw PSU's Ken Bone and assistants from EWU and MSU. The MSU assistant was talking with Decatur High School's head coach, most likely about point guard Marcus Tibbs, who has also been recruited by Eastern and a few other schools.

Here is a little info:
Hutchison, Booth nominated to McDonald’s game

Mark Morris High standout Eric Hutchison, and Winlock’s Nathan Booth are among 27 senior boys basketball players from across the state nominated to play in the McDonald’s All-American Basketball Game.

Hutchison, a 6-foot-8 post who has already inked to play next season at the University of Montana, is averaging 12.6 points per game. Booth, a 6-5 forward, is averaging 11 points per outing.

More than 1,500 boys from across the country are nominated annually to participate in the McDonald’s All-American Game, which was first played in 1978. Of the group, the list is cut to 125 players, with the top-100 finalists to be selected in early February.

The ballot is further sliced to the top 20 players in late February, who will be placed on either the West or East All-American Team.

Among the other nominees are Columbia River’s Steven Bjornstad, Joey Wayman of Hoquiam, and Bellevue’s Alex Schrempf, son of former NBA All-Star Detlef Schrempf.

Also Thurmon Wood's Dominguez team made a trip to Washington State this week to play in a tourney in Seattle this week. Dominguez beat Rainier Beach which had a 30 something winning steak going, but for some reason Woods did not travel to the tourney and did not play.

Griz at EWU tonight......glad to hear that Andy HIll is scouring Washington for some more "big time" recuits.

An interesting recent observation in the recent past recruiting decisions is the emergence, almost from day one, of Sentinel's Andy Garland at Carroll College. See he was voted POW in the Frontier Conference just last week after scoring 35 pts. and getting 17 rebs. in a game. One of the best HS rebounders I've ever seen...even if only 6'5". Pretty decent outside shot, handles it a little, tons of heart and great character.....and not even a sniff from the Griz other than walk on consideration.

Andy led Carroll to a preseason win at EWU this fall...think had 17 points and 12 rebounds in that one. His first college level game ever. Will be interesting to see how many of our "big time" guys beat those stats tonight and whether or not the Griz can match Carroll's result in the game itself.

I think Garland was a miss on the part of our coaches. A kid like this will never cause problems, play hard at every practice, make his way through school without question and frankly think he could play at the Big Sky level pretty quickly. Look at some of our "misses" in the recent past. The Aussie, Rundles, Swift (there are more). Why not miss on a Missoula kid one of these times?

Nice post, and I tend to agree with you. I have said this for years now, that it seems the Coaches at UM and MSU are more willing to take a chance on an out of state player that an in state player.

I will not talk specifically about UM recruitment of Garland, I will let GB1 or Playerrep do that but I can tell you that I really got the impression that if the NCAA still had the 15 scholarship limit (now it is 13) Huse would have offered Garland. The MSU coaches knew Garland well because he was the MVP of the 2007 camp, and I know Huse liked him a LOT. In the end, though, Huse did not feel he could take a chance. Just like I said when both the Griz and Bobcats took a pass on McGillis I think not recruiting - for a scholarship- Garland was a mistake.

I did talk with a friend who does recruit for a d-1 school, and he compared Garland to former Bobcat Danny Sullivan, someone who would redshirt, his freshman year, be a minor player for the two years and then a role player for his junior and senior year. The other major concern for Andy was he quick/athletic enough to guard small forwards in college. In any case, the thing everyone over looked was how hard he works, and hustles, and at this level that can over come a lot.

Just my opinion

Perhaps you should have been in Tinkle's office every day lobbying for him to get a scholarship to UM? I'm sure the education he will get at Carroll will be second to none. Glad he is doing well where he landed.

Back on topic: I have heard that Thurman Wood's has been ruled ineligible for Dominguez. It has nothing to with academicas or trouble, so you can relax. I am told that he is a 5th year senior at Dominguez has been denied a hardship year by his high school conference. I hear he has one more appeal available to the state organization. I also hear his team mate Jordon Hamilton - a Texas signee - is in the same position.

Why are they fifth year seniors? I don't understand.
I guess I should rephrase after re reading my info. Woods and Hamilton were denied a hardship fifth year of eligibility. I am not sure if that makes any difference and it seems to indicate that he has already played 4 years of high school ball. Did he start playing early (8th grade?)or did some event happen that had him reclassified? I don't know the story.

Here I found some info on the net. I do not think it clears anything up but it does seem to confirm.

Thanks, cat. I appreciate your effort to explain the situation. You're right -- none of us probably will ever know exactly what occurred. I am aware of kids who play high school ball as 8th graders, but that's usually only in teeny towns, where there simply aren't enough kids in the high school to fill in all the spots. Who knows!

You can apply for hardship year here in Washington too. Marcus Tibbs of Decatur, who an MSU assistant was watching closely and later talked to his coach, and who the Eastern coaches offered a scholarship last year, got a fifth year of eligibility because he basically missed his freshman year while tending to his ailing grandfather, who was his guardian.
