I know the title of this got changed to just Montana Grizzlies Basketball but i thought this was relevent.

Tune into ESPN and check out what a great college hoops atmosphere is. The students get three quarters of the lower bowl! They're all wearing the white shirts and making as much noise as possible. This is pretty cool looking. Can anyone figure out what that noise is when the spartans are on offense? Some sustained high-pitched squealing noise.

There is a reason its called the Izzone. When we go to as many final fours and Tom Izzo, then we will have that kind of atmosphere as well.

I'd kill for a 5th of that atmosphere. It blows that winning has to come first for students to come out and get into it because it's kind of a chicken and the egg type thing. I think winning would come easier to this team if they had more support.

Haha, Bo Ryan to Erin Andrews: "Are these all your fans?"

What you must realize is that most college students dont know jackshit about basketball or football. Well as least that I have heard sitting in the student section for the past couple of years. Students are there to have fun and Grizzly basketball at this point in time is not "fun." You and I might be in love with it but doesnt mean that the average college student and the U does.....

Trust me, I have had the same dream you have in regards to the atmosphere only the difference is I've been around this program for about 6-7 years now and I am happy with the success of recent years. It will be here soon enough

I was just discussing this aspect of things with my girlfriend.... Most UM students aren't big sports fans. Most come from right here in MT and grew up not having a major team to cheer for. These type of people just don't understand why someone would ever be obsessed with sports and cheer to the point that they look like idiots at games.

Then there are the outsiders who do like sports. The problem with these guys is that they think they're above it all. They'd rather stay in and watch what's on ESPN than go support our own hoops program. They sit down at games and try to take it in and don't want to get into any rituals or anything. Just trying to look cool. Damn, i hate these people.

It all starts with winning though. Look at last year, things got pretty wild for the [meaningless] season finale against NAU. I showed up to that game 45 minutes to an hour early and there were probably 100-150 students there before me.

Winning has to be the reason football draws and bball doesn't. I've heard a few people mention that hoops used to be the best show in town. A lot of students don't realize that it might still be.

I always thought that it was the outsiders that come here are the ones not going to the game. Most of the high school students in missoula are pretty big Griz fans and usually attend football games. Basketball is just not exciting at the moment, if we continue winning and somehow pull off this BIG SKy chase to take us to the dance then I would say there is some excitement winning three conference titles in a row.

Bottomline....Winning brings people.

Griz will win and they will come, just not in 06-07.

Exactly. Winning is everything. I was just listing two types of people that don't come to games. The outsiders definitely don't come much, i wouldn't say more of these people come. It's just that when they do, they're not into it. These don't really relate to football seeing as just about everyone goes to these. Basketball needs winning and a reputation. It needs that party feel to it, like it's what everyone is doing. It definitely all starts with winning though.

This game is incredible. In the entire time i've been watching, the biggest lead was 4. There have been 20+ lead changes. Anyone reading needs to turn this on.

It's over. Reminds me a bit of the Griz-Pacific game. Close the whole way then just some poor choices down the stretch led to an insurmountable lead down with a minute to play.

I agree AtHome, this team needs to win to bring students to the game. Unfortunately that kind of goes hand in hand, the more students the better the chances for the griz TO win. I have not been able to get to a game all year, I have had to listen to every game because i have had to work every single night they have had a home game. I am so excited, thursday night i am off, and i will be able to take in an important game. I can not wait!!! Another thing i think hurts student attendence is the hokeyness involved throughout the game. The weak ass tunnel and smoke, the weak intros, the gimmicks to win money, and pretty much anything else the p.r. people think up. By no means do i know how to solve the problem, but whats in place right now is obviously not working either.

The tunnel is decent when there are fans. There used to be enough students to do a student tunnel at the intros and that was always fun.

I also hate how the marketing department is trying to bribe students into coming. It's getting kind of ridiculous.

I dont know, the tunnel pales in comparison to football, and the players dont seem as stoked when they come out.

I HATE when they bring students out on the floor for the player intro tunnel!! i wear my maroon um shirt and theyve asked me to do it a couple times and i say no because i just think that its kind of a distraction for the players. I can understand they are trying to give the students an experience, but its not about the students, the players should stay focused and bond via a team tunnel if anything.

Back in the day when the Griz games were packed the best promotion was the half court shoot for a car. During the season if you made it, you won a $100 bill on the spot (Terry Hober sponsored it) and qualified for the finals to win a car the last game of the BSC season. That was a very popular promotion and real simple. I saw quite a few baskets made over the years and a car or two given away.

They dumb it down quite a bit now a days. Thats quite the challenge, now all you have to do is show up and sign in for a chance to win $100. now, i see, karl tyler is sponsering a $1000 scholarship for the rest of the games! The way i understood it was there would be one for the remainin games. Thats incredible, and as much as i feel like the students are being bribed to go, i sure as hell wouldnt turn down either.

No kidding, why complain about free stuff when you are in college. When I went to UM we knew every place in town that had free food, starving college kids need the money for beer, not food. :drinking:

I complain because students shouldn't need these incentives to come out. They should be like icing to an already good thing. I also complain i have awful luck and can't make a half court shot to save my life. I've been out there twice!
