Will Cherry NBADL

Canton lost last night by 4, but Cherry had another double double.

He played 36 minutes and 45 seconds, had 16 points (7-12 shooting), 10 assists, 6 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 turnovers.

Looks like Canton struggled when he wasn't on the court. He had a +10 in that +- stat while the other PG was -14 and only played 11:15 (the time Cherry wasn't on the court).

Can't wait until I have a decent non-Verizon connection again so I can start watching these games.

Check out his season stats so far. Pretty solid numbers with a very good assists to turnover ratio, almost 2 steals per game as well. Looks like Will Cherry has improved his overall game since last season. I still think his assists need to go up. However, he certainly is turning some heads and getting some notice. Way to go Will. http://www.nba.com/dleague/playerfile/will_cherry/index.html?nav=page" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Pardon me for asking, MTGR, but who is taking notice of Will?

His performance has been terrific so far. It will allow him to return for a full NBADL season next season. He also has played great defense, great turnover to assist ratio, and improving as a ball distributor. Considering he has done what he has coming off injury and in a short time, I believe it is likely some NBA teams now know who he is. I don't see how a few have not taken notice. We will see. I will be surprised if gets his NBA call up this season. However, next season is a possibility. At the very least be invited to a team camp.

From the games that I've watched I know the announcer really likes Cherry. He's also mentioned several times that Cherry's defense is getting a lot of praise by "them". I'm not sure who "them" is, he either didn't elaborate or I missed that part of it.

Their previous starting PG Jorge Gutierrez got a multi-year contract with the Brooklyn Nets it looks like. He averaged 13.9 points, 5.7 rebounds, 6.9 assists and 1.2 steals a game (32.8 minutes a game). He shot 46.1% from the field, 37.5% from 3 and 76.6% from the FT line.

That's pretty cool for Cherry that Gutierrez is in the NBA now since it means Cherry will likely be the starting PG for the rest of the year for the Charge (unless he gets called up). Have to admit it was fun watching Canton with both Gutierrez and Cherry out there. Opposing teams had to have hated that (both are great defenders and very similar players).

Since moving into the starting PG spot for Canton Cherry has put up very similar numbers to Gutierrez. He's averaged: 36.625 minutes, 14.25pts, 6.63 assists, 3.63 rebounds and 2 steals. He's shot 46.5% from the field, 31% from 3 and 81.3% from the FT line. He's had 3 double doubles in his 8 starts so far.

Here are a couple of videos from the NBA DLeague's youtube channel showing highlights of two of Cherry's 3 double doubles.

nothing would give our program more credibility right now than to have cherry make it to the nba. it's gonna happen.

Cherry's numbers for that game are awesome. His foot must be healed--finally. Happy for him. He was a tremendous player for UM, especially when healthy. I like Will. Hope he can make it to the NBA. This late season charge seems like a good start.

It's interesting to see how good Lillard has been in the NBA. While he was more talented than Cherry, Will played him tough and compared well in multiple games--and definitely outplayed him in the last season game 2 years ago.

Really? Have you looked at the % of players who started out in NBADL who've actually made a NBA roster spot? Not very promising. Typically, it is a revolving door for guys getting sent down and then brought back up. Contracts and salary cap room etc play a bigger roll in it than a guy who actually probably deserves a shot at a 14 day contract etc.

Ya, I'm sure NBA front office or basketball ops guys are really taking that game that happened two years ago into some serious consideration... as well as Will playing him tough in multiple games like 2-3 years ago. DL just gave the Blazers their 1st playoff series win in 14 years and clearly is a rising star in the NBA. Trust me if Will Cherry was as good or close to DL's talent he would be in the NBA. If Cherry wants to make the league he needs to find a niche and show teams that he's better than their current PG. He will probably get a roster spot on the Cavs Summer League team, but that is zero guarantee on making the league, because again you have to look at each teams cap space, who they sign out of free agency and the contracts of their current roster to get an idea of what teams will be looking for a PG and the types of risk they are willing to take on unproven players.

How one player played against a current star back in college doesn't mean :censored: to the NBA front office guys making the decisions. And how a guy played in the NBADL doesn't weight too heavy either. How a guy plays in the Euroleague, Eurocup, Turkey, BBL, CSK, Italia Lega and Adriatic weights more than the NBADL, because those leagues have teams with 30-40 million $ budgets and players getting paid 6 to 7 figure salaries so obviously the talent and competition level is going to be higher and a lot closer to the NBA's talent and competition level.

The NBADL primarily is for NBA teams to send down draft picks or free-agent pick ups who get beat out of a roster spot and the team wants to or has to keep them around (luxury tax), but doesn't just want them to ride the pine. ($) It is the same for training camp or summer league guys they really like, but they don't have the roster spots or cap space to bring in a 3rd back-up to whatever position. Some teams will let those players know that they want them to stay and play with their NBADL affiliate team until they can unload a player to open a spot for them. However, for some of those players that's not a great option, because there is no guarantee and they could be making a 6 figure salary in Europe as opposed to rolling the dice in the NBADL for the leagues max salary of $35k.
I wish Will all the best, but there is a lot that goes into guys making it into the league other than what happens on the court or taking a current NBA star to school back in the day.

Hey, Savage, read the posts and respond appropriately--or get out of here. This forum doesn't needs jerks going after good posters.

You don't seem to have much of a clue about Griz basketball, or even basketball. Most everyone posting in this thread knows alot about basketball and is providing more information, so no need to talk down to them. Some are or have been basketball coaches.

149 current NBA player have played in the NABDL. See the link to the all-star teams, and note that the star (*) indicates that the player finished the season on an NBA team. 7 of the top 15 players.
