why play action fake to side they do?

Why does JJ (coach designed?) play action fake to the opposite side of his body as the running backs go? Acting like handing to no one seems really messed up....Enlighten me...happens a ton.

noticed that also and wondered why....coached a lot of years and makes no sense to me...maybe someone else can enlighten us....

If he's your assignment, the QB could act like he's pulling his phone out of his pocket and it might just freeze you.

It's just another part of the master plan the Griz coaches came up with, you will see the bigger picture clearer come November.

I don't know the answer to the question, but NFL qb's also do that sometimes. I was thinking it might be a broken play when I saw it happen. Did it occur more than twice yesterday?

It happened at least twice yesterday and I noticed it in both the PSU and UCD games...the footwork looks very odd when it happens. :?:

Chiefs qd did that today. For a TD. It's planned. I think it allows two backs to block while stalling lb and safeties.

The first time it happened I thought it was a broken play, but the second time I decided it must be to freeze the backers and safeties for an instant thinking it's a broken play and the qb will have to run. The receivers will have a chance to get some separation when they hesitate.

Freezing them is why you fake a handoff to a back.... not fake one to air. And in chiefs game it wasn't a pass play.

ESPN commentators who do the highlights, said the chiefs play was a broken play, shouldn't have happened like that.

Well at that fast pace if I'm rushing and he sticks the ball out its gonna slow me down just for a second cuz I'm not seeing anyone in the area and I've gotta stop to figure out what I'm missing, making me think I'm blowing my assignment or something is going on that I can't figure out. I mean think about it, especially if you're in the secondary and he sticks the ball out there while youre tryin to look thru 10-14 big guys and all you see is JJ holding the ball out there you'll likely slow down and think, Wtf, why, who, and by then the ball is gone.

It was a blown play for KC today but it screwed everything up bad enough that Smith was able to Waltz in for 6.

Try using something other than textese, you may get taken seriously in that case.

That's 100% why they do it. Finally somebody actually thinks about something. Many colleges including us in the past used a fake handoff with no RB around in the shotgun. Remember lb dbs are on level fields they only see a drop back and the should sticking the ball out. Often time views are blocked by players. It freezes you team for even a second. Its actually used a lot by teams who use a lot of crossing routes or TE in passes.

That's the only scenario I could really think of. After playing defense in high school and thinking about the thread topic it seemed to be the logical answer. If I were to see a fake to "nowhere" I would likely stop and try to figure out what was happening and why he was holding the ball out then thinking to myself, "Shit, just got burned."
