DM is kind of overrated, seriously, hes a good QB for the cats but what have they had since Lulay....and before that it was Bradley.

He doesnt win big games, in fact an argument could be made very easily that he is the reason they DONT win big games.

He folds like a $3 chinese lawn chair from WalMart when you need it the most.

So what if the Irish lad puts up the numbers he does every year in a weak conference when the end is always the same? I would take a guy that can win a big game over the numbers any day of the week.

Luckily we have JJ and we get both...........its good to be a Griz
Dead right. McGee has engineered a total of two TDs in the last 10 quarters against his arch rival. JJ engineered 4 TDs in his only 4 quarters against his arch rival. McGee has been overmatched against SHS - two TDs engineered in 8 quarters. JJ wasn't - 4 TDs engineered in 4 quarters.

And, Kem, as you often state, it isn't always about winning against your rival. Congrats on JJs numbers against DeNarius in one game. I suppose we'll see how it ends up this year in Bozeman when they go head to head again.

But please, continue the statistics on what DeNarius didn't do against the Griz statistically while ignoring the fact that two of the three were wins. Remember - why do we play the game?

So the guy who told the paper as a freshman "I've never been nervous before or during a football game in my life" can't be a captain because it messes with his pregame routine. Now that's pretty funny

You must know, based on your illustrious college football career that you never had.

Cat/griz isn't a big game? Stony Brook isn't a big game? His record is not sterling in big games, no, but he has shown promise. It might help if his O-line wasn't so young.

you'll find most qbs have good games when their team establishes the run. another time qbs put up good numbers is when their team gets way behind and the opponent goes to a prevent and gets picked apart underneath. a good qb will put up good numbers in those two situations. another situation is if the other teams defense just sucks. football is a team sport and one player is never the sole reason a team wins or loses.

If dm had as much protection from his o-line as he does from his forum fans he may not have to pray so much before each game. :lol: Sorry all you cat fans are so upset e-grizzers asked a question regarding the heralded dm. Seems like the point is he in fact seemed likely from an outsider's point of view to be a captain. Nothing more- nothing less!

yes, the m.s.u. o-line isn't very good. teams will look to exploit that this year and if they don't get it fixed they'll struggle in big games. you won't get far if you don't have skill and size up front, regardless of how good your backs and receivers are.

Referring to Denarius McGhee is "the Irish lad" is an example of "irony."

"Irony" is defined by Dictionary.com as:

iro·ny noun \ˈī-rə-nē also ˈī(-ə)r-nē\

1: a pretense of ignorance and of willingness to learn from another assumed in order to make the other's false conceptions conspicuous by adroit questioning —called also Socratic irony
2a : the use of words to express something other than and especially the opposite of the literal meaning b : a usually humorous or sardonic literary style or form characterized by irony c : an ironic expression or utterance
3a (1) : incongruity between the actual result of a sequence of events and the normal or expected result (2) : an event or result marked by such incongruity b : incongruity between a situation developed in a drama and the accompanying words or actions that is understood by the audience but not by the characters in the play — called also dramatic irony, tragic irony

So, in this case, what is the thing that is being expressed?

What is the "literal meaning?"

Things I have learned from this thread:

1. Only Griz Granny can call DM an Irish lad and get away with it;
2) Don't ask questions on this board regarding DM or you will see what scat fans look like on PMS;
3) DM is already a "true" captain and the overly burdensome title and formal duties of captain are simply too dramatic;
4) JJ should not be formal captain as this will only take away from his play and be a full on distraction;
5) Scat fans are delusional enough to believe DM is the LBJ;
6) DM is as good a guy off the field so hereby no questions should be posed about him on egriz;
7) If DM is ever injured, he may have enough freed up time and resources to take over formal duties as "captain", but he may only be referred to as "El Capitan" and
8) DM is a demi-god of the nature of Thor, don't provoke him.

:thumb: Perfectly said! :lol:

No takers? Come on, folks, it's not that complicated.

The thing that is being expressed is that, because of the name, McGhee is of Irish descent.

The literal meaning is that, because of skin color, McGhee is actually of Sub-Saharan African descent.

The above is intended as a humorous ironic expression.

I'm hearing you AWF, and yes I do find the humorous ironic expression. Is it because I'm literally of Irish descent or am I just able to find humor in the subject?

Perhaps both. Please note that I'm not passing judgment on the quality of the humor.

What, exactly, are these onerous "captain's duties" that take up so much time?

It's probably the most disruptive at halftime. I'd rather have my QB staying in the locker room working on adjustments than going out to midfield for captain duties.

Seriously you guys ?? The guy that takes time after beating his biggest rival on their turf and
poses for a picture with a young Griz fan and you gotta run him down? Maybe Cat fans should
come up with some nick names for JJ like Pump & dump or some stupid sh!t like that. Then
what????? Does that make me cool? NO!!! I respect the athlete JJ and what he's been through
and hope he's successful for his own good because they're all the same kids, Irish, Black, Asian,
Native, Samoan, Texan, Montanan. Grow the f_ck up!

Not sure who that's directed to, catdaddy7. I'm just trying to get people to be honest about the fact that the "Irish lad" joke, while maybe not intended a "slur," is absolutely based on ethnicity.

I agree that it was somewhat ironic at one point only because it was rather clever but that has worn off, at least for me. If other people want to continue to try to find the humor in it then there's nothing anyone can do but ignore it. Or as you say you could retaliate in-kind but then that would make you childish too.
