Why Isn't Gus Playing More?

He only got in the game for nine minutes tonight. He had 4 rebounds and four points on 2-3 shooting. The f%@#n won by 40 points. What in the hell is going on with the rotation. I heard Tink talk about Gus being the newcomer of the year in the conference. Not if he only gets nine minutes per game. This kid played great in the scrimmage and now his minutes have already started to swindle. Can someone give me some insight into this!!!

Relax,

Nobody dominated the minutes, everyone played. Gus will get his shot. This is one game, the others were exhibition. Gus did fine, he only had 9 minutes, and did just fine, even though he picked up 3 quick fouls.

I agree. Relax! It's the first game. He got 2 fouls quickly and got pulled and then got his 3rd foul quickly too. That had some to do with it. He'll get plenty of time. Everyone is excited about him.

Griz defense douses Lights

MISSOULA - Wayne Tinkle wanted better defense and game-long energy from his Montana Grizzlies in their men's basketball season opener against Montana State-Northern Friday night. He got both.

The Grizzlies put the clamps on the visitors from the very beginning, challenging nearly every shot and allowing few second chances on the way to an 83-42 win at Dahlberg Arena.

UM broke away from a 33-21 halftime advantage to outscore the Lights 50-21 in the second half. The margin gave Tinkle and his staff the opportunity to get a lot of minutes for reserves. Twelve players got at least six minutes of playing time and 11 scored.

The Grizzlies owned the boards as well with a 36-21 advantage, 12-3 on the offensive end. Montana shot 53.4 percent from the floor while holding the Lights to just 36.8.

Montana also took better care of the ball, turning it over just 11 times compared to 22 giveaways for MSU-Northern. The Grizzlies, a much bigger team, used that size differential to outscore the Lights 40-10 in the paint. UM scored 28 points off turnovers to just four for MSU-N.

Junior post Andrew Strait of Montana led all scorers with 20 while Jordan Hasquet chipped in 14 for the Grizzlies. Delvaughn Tinned was the only Northern player in double figures with 10.

UM's Matt Dlouhy led all rebounders with seven. Matt Martin had five assists for the Grizzlies while Cameron Rundles and Greg Spurgetis had four each.

The Grizzlies take their 1-0 record on the road for the rest of November starting with games at Utah Valley State Monday night and Wyoming Wednesday night. MSU-Northern, which came to Missoula with a two-game winning streak, fell to 2-3 on the season.

MSU-NORTHERN - Simms 3-4 1-2 7; Pettersen 0-6 0-0 0; Tinned 4-9 0-2 10; Brothers 1-3 1-2 3; Erickson 0-2 2-2 2; Feasel 0-0 0-0 0; Bullchild 1-4 0-1 3; Williams 1-1 4-6 6; Sellars 1-1 1-2 3; Gillespie 0-1 0-0 0; Simpson 2-6 1-2 6; Stone 1-1 0-0 2. TOTALS 14-38 10-19 42.

MONTANA - Dlougy 4-8 0-0 9; Strait 7-13 6-8 20; Hasquet 6-10 2-2 14; Ellis 0-1 0-0 0; Martin 3-7 0-0 8; Rundles 2-3 0-0 5; Swift 1-2 2-2 4; Chase 2-3 0-0 4; Spurgetis 1-2 4-5 6; Staudacher 2-4 0--0 5; Chavez 1-1 0-0 2; Sharp 2-4 2-6 6. TOTALS 31-58 16-23 83.

The GRIZ are loaded with quality post players (Strait, Hasquet, Chavez, Sharp and Gus). Gus looked fine tonight and in a rebounding sense, he's looked better with each game. The 3 fouls limited his 2nd half time. Sharp didn't even get in until late in the 2nd quarter and he started some last year. The abundance of quality post players is going to pay off in the long term! :thumb:

I don't see Strait and Hasquet being out much. Gus will have to do quite a bit to impress enough to steal time from them. And he can't play the three in their 3 out 2 in offense. Doesn't have the skills needed for that.

Maybe shift hasquet to the 3 and gus to the 4? Then you have Chavez and Sharp too. It's too crowded for all these guys.
