why i like our team

1. guard play. we've got quicks (ellis), shooters (matthews, criswell and martin), height (matthews, criswell), "d". guard play wins games, especially in the tournament, while "quicks" is a whole new concept at montana.
2. experience. last year was to make the tournament; this year, to win. since that nightmarish start last year (down 18-2 after four minutes) we outscored washington the rest of the way, and have not been overmatched once this year--stanford, uw-milwaukee, santa clara, oral roberts, loyala marymount, drake tournament.
3. andrew strait. tough matchups inside for us against fazekas and company, but strait will draw fouls himself, as will chavez. remember, fazekas is not immune to foul trouble, as we saw in the wac championship game against utah state.
4. depth. i've got confidence in this team all the way down to and including future star austin swift--11 deep. trouble? bring in the "bomb squad!"
5. breakout potential. to win games like this against better teams, you need a step-up performance from somebody other than matthews, strait or criswell, and i think we'll get it, just as we got it from hasquet and chavez in the big sky championship game. my top candidates: hasquet (coming into his own now), chavez (again) or...drumroll...stuart mayes. a darkhourse: kyle sharp. remember, this true freshman is a player, a kid we might not have got had we not signed him early, and he could be ready to put it all together in a tournament game.
6. the stats. over a season, they don't lie, and they tell us we're among the nation's leaders in assisits and shooting percentage. as the e.s.p.n. commentators pointed out, this means we're getting the ball into the hands of guys where they can make shots.
7. virgil matthews. oh, yeah, i love this kid. he just plays better and better in big games, and i think he's ready to make a statement on the national stage.

my main worry: we have one of those stinker halves like we had against boise state or the first game at northern arizona.

nevada's main worry: that we put together two great halves.

it'll be a tough game; nevada be good, nevada be big, nevada be experienced. but for the first time in 30 years in the ncaa tournament, it's fair to say: we can DO it!!

Matt Dlouhy brings a lot to the program, most notably - intensity. His shot blocking and steals can be real momentum changers. We have not seen a lot of jams recently, but he has stepped up a number of times and contributed significant points. I thought he had a total game against Eastern in Flagstaff. :twocents:

Dlouhy stands for defense and when his three is dropping it is run city. A double Matt D. and Matt M. from three is not an impossible dream. Matt M. can play some good D and knows how to find Strait.
Some of this and the usual Griz assist based offense would be a fun deal.

gb1: i'm still waiting for your contribution to the coaching fund. i hope "1" doesn't stand for $1!

Have you even checked whether we can do this? I didn't know we were supposed to send money to you city. :thumb:

free throw shooting concerns me and getting caught in half court traps. the griz struggled with both towards the end of the bsc.

gb$1: no, you were not supposed to send money to me to pass on to the coaches--though i have had two p.m.'s offering contributions. since our mutual pal jack abramoff is out of the picture, i'd prefer the money flow through an entity set up in missoula. best we work on this after the griz are eliminated from the tournament in two weeks.

i took from the krysko interview in the missoulian three main points:
1.) he's got money, and while the disparity with, say, mark few , rankles, that's not the key issue for him;
2.) he's always up for a challenge, and when the right one comes along, he'll definitely listen;
3.) but money IS an issue where his assistants are concerned.

i don't care if we raised $10, i think we need to do SOMETHING and show this staff we appreciate the direction they've taken this program. as a mentor once said, you can only do what you can do, but somethimes what you can do is enough. when someone great comes into your life, whether it's a woman, a friend, or a basketball coach at your alma mater, you should do what you can do to keep them.
