Why Griz fell behind NDSU

Because UM is a better overall program in all facets, and kids still care about winning?

I can’t believe this is a real discussion. Why do I think UM should beat the majority of their peers in recruiting? I shouldn’t even have to say! I guarandamntee NDSU doesn’t think they’ll be losing recruits to Missouri State.
They also don’t believe they get all the recruits they want.

As of now, that challenge looks like a pipe dream. It doesn't look to me like, from both a talent and coaching standpoint, we are anywhere near the Dakotas.

Where is the young coaching talent on this staff? If Bobby retired, who on the currennt staff would you be confident in turning to?

If prior to Hauck 2.0, someone had told you we'd appear in one championship over 7 seasons (in a historically weak FCS), would that meet your definition of success?
Our OL coach and DL coach are our young talented assistants. I would feel great about Roger Cooper taking over once Bobby retires.

Not at all.

I’ll put it this way. If a players best offers are Idaho, Sac State, and UM, then I believe 7/10 times, I expect that player to pick UM. I’m not going to sit there and act like I’d be happy otherwise. But if you guys are happy to just be participating, then good for you.
I agree with Helena that some of the factors he mentioned will throw off your 7-10 ratio.

In this day and age HS kids are becoming more chosey about what they major in. There has been a lot of attention paid to whether or not it's worth getting a college education considering the price and time commitment. The liberal arts schools such as Montana have fallen a bit out of favor, right or wrong. Let's face it, engineering provides by far the best bang for the buck for the students financial success and kids know that. Isn't it odd that UM is the only school in the BSC that doesn't offer a degree in an ABET accredited engineering program? I understand that very few college football players have the academic fortitude to complete a BS in engineering but many want to at least try. I think currently that is hurting the UM's recruiting.
And you know who’s not majoring in an ABET accredited engineering program?? Your QB1, TD Tommy. Someone in Bozeman sold that kid a bill of goods, financial engineering is a business degree with a fabricated title.

You'd have to ask the Regents that question.

Do I think it's odd? No, because cow college has one. Do I think it's odd msu has ridiculous crossover with UM programs? Yes. Do I think it's odd both wazzu and Udub have engineering programs? Yes. It's a ridiculous waste of resources. And psu... omg.

Yea all PAC12 schools have engineering. Pretty much any school worth going to does. There is no bachelor degree at UM that places graduates like PSU or EWU's Mechanical Engineering program does. The Computer science degree would be the only thing close. The UM is the easiest school to get accepted into, I think it's over 90% acceptance rate. EWU is comparable.

Edit*** my bad Montana is not the worst.
.
Acceptance rates
ISU 100%
WSU 100%
EWU 98%
UNC 94%
PSU 91%
UM 85%
SSU 82%
UI 79%
MSU 71%
UCD 41%
Cal Poly 28%

UM doesn't have engineering because the regents won't allow it. Which in Montana makes complete sense. But I suspect even a bub like you could understand that (or perhaps I'm giving you too much credit).

Also, cow college and UM have precisely the same acceptance requirements. Sorry to destroy your bullshit with facts.

They may have the same acceptance requirements but UM accepts 85% of the applicants and MSU accepts 71%.
Sorry bout the facts there smart guy.

So if they have the same requirements, and cow college is accepting fewer students, it stands to reason that UM is getting considerably better, more qualified applicants.
Colleges will define minimums but that doesn't mean you're automatically accepted. Maybe at UM but not most colleges including MSU. Hate to break that to you.

There are like only 10 players at MSU majoring in engineering.

The rest of them are not CS and math grads, so I don't know wtf you guys are talking about re: STEM majors and football players.

They have more liberal arts majors than engineering majors.

Our business school is ranked higher than MSU's, and the majority of their players are business majors.

They are our direct competition, and we are certainly not losing out to them (it's arguable that we're losing at all) based on not having as many STEM options.

How many football players actually playing meaningful snaps for MSU do you think are engineering students? Grebe is 1

I would hate this so much. I already hate it enough that he's an assistant coach there.

Just to touch on the recruiting advantages. Your stadium is an advantage. After that what sets you apart more? The champions center? It's often pointed to but yet MSU has something similar. Has anyone been in MSU's BAC to say the CC is leaps and bounds better? Or is that just assumption. The BAC is newer by only a few years so one would assume it's got more up to date amenities. From the outside...they're both just buildings with 4 walls. I went to the Snow Globe game in Missoula and honestly was a little underwhelmed from the outside. I thought it was going to be some cool building from the outside. But it was 4 walls. As was I underwhelmed from the outside of the BAC. But its the inside that counts and I have seen neither on the inside.

The indoor practice facility is great. Longtime coming. But the Dakotas all have more expensive and one would assume pretty nice inside. MSU is right behind but almost there.

Airport to have parents get to games? Fargo and then who's next? Not Brookings. Bozeman is the busiest airport in MT but it's not like Missoula doesn't have a lot of flights.

NIL. You were kind of late to the game. 20 years ago you wouldn't have been. And the school can't be blamed for that. That's all on the fans and boosters to get that started.

Competing year in and year out. It always felt like with 1.0 the griz got to the natty and didn't compete. Like there was never a question of who was going to win the games after a couple quarters. But i could be misrememebering. I just seem to rememeber them not being so competititve. Who's was that kid that played D line at Richmand when you played them? Kid was a stud!

What other facilities? UM has had a parking garage for some time. I've heard Choate used to take recruits to the new dining hall to end tours and say this is where you get to eat, because it's supposed to be pretty sweet there. You just built a new dining hall. Business may be rated higher but have you seen Jake Jabs hall? Pretty sweet. Though let's be honest, most people start school with one degree in mind and then switch to business. They didn't choose a school based on the business program. UM just built their first new dorm in how many years? MSU has at least 3 in the kast 10 years. I have no idea about the Dakotas on any of this stuff, which is why I haven't brought them up. My point isn't to compare and contrast the 2 MT schools.

So at the end of the day the stadium is what you have noone else has. And a foot bridge. Which you can't discount. I always tell people going to their first game you have to park over on the Press Box side so you can make the walk in over the bridge. If I was in charge of game day visits, I would absolutely make sure parents walked in before the game over that bridge with the crowd of people. It's special. Oh and you had a Hooters. That was a distinct advantage over everyone! But it's no longer.... so sad.

Elrod, always enjoy your thoughts. Great posts on this thread. Really enjoyed the messages back and forth from the off season. I'm hoping to make it to a game and I'll make sure I look you up if I do.

GinWA, I assume you're going to type some reply about how dumb I am to think any of that. It won't be so much about what I posted but an attack on my intellect. And you'll call me a bub because that's your old tired retort. It's kind of like you're still stuck on your own 1.0. You haven't come up with a 2.0 come back so you're just not in the game like you used to. 😉

And PR, no I did not play the game. Just to get that out there. But I would love to be invited to the lake!

Missoula is a better town than Bozeman. Bigger and better shape if downtown area. A river runs through it. I’ve lived in both. The Griz stadium location is much better than MSU’s. Walkable from downtown. Closer to dorms and main campus buildings. Missoula has better winter weather. I only skimmed the long summary, but it seemed pretty good. Griz still have a better modern day football tradition and more historical success. Look at trips to national championship games. Cats have made good comeback in last 12 or 15 years.

The young OL coach just replaced the ultimate good old boy. So there is hope the young guy can get the line to dominant levels again. Germer was great in 1.0 but something changed in 2.0 such as his input on recruiting, treatment of players in modern day, willingness to change tactics, ability to change into modern oline design (less hat on a hat pushing forward these days). It does seem the young guy has something going this year and doing so with guys he didn’t even have input in to recruiting.

Been around a lot of high school players during their recruitment?

I mean, my heart is so in Missoula, Montana that I reflexively want to disagree, but this is on point.

I enjoyed the conversations as well. Please feel free to reach out, and we can take the footbridge walk together. (I'll make sure there are muggers waiting for you on the way out, though. ;) )

Neither state university is rejecting qualified applicants.

Hate to break it to you. Facts suck when you're trying to troll.
